The Monster MASH

Rate this book
Ancient gods. Modern war. And a star-crossed couple who could use some divine intervention.

The day I was drafted into the army of the gods, all I knew about being a MASH surgeon was what I’d learned from Hawkeye Pierce and Hot Lips Houlihan. Now here I am, Dr. Petra Robichaud, in the middle of an immortal war, assigned to a MASH camp with a nosy sphinx, a vegetarian werewolf, and an uptight vampire who really needs to get a life.

At least they’re all too busy with their own dramas to discover my secret: I can see the dead. It’s a forbidden gift, one that can get me killed, so I haven’t told a soul.

Until the arrestingly intense Galen arrives on my operating table, half-dead and totally to-die-for. When his spirit tries to slip out of his fatally wounded body, I impulsively slip it back in. Call it a rash resurrection. One I’ll live to regret.

Now Commander Galen of Delphi knows my secret, and he’s convinced I’m part of an ancient prophecy—one that can end the war for good. But taking a chance could cost me everything. And it would be easier to convince him to leave me alone, except now the prophecies are starting to come true…

Warning: This novel contains a hefty dose of danger, drama, practical jokes, pet swamp lizards, brooding demigods, adventure, romance, and heart—in a MASH camp where everybody knows your business.

*The core of this book was originally called Immortally Yours, published by St. Martin's Press in 2012. The author has rewritten it into the way she always envisioned the story to be, which means it is now a romantic comedy instead of an angsty book. Oh, and there are a lot more pet swamp lizards, too.

From PNN (Paranormal News Network):
"Stay tuned to learn Five Things in Your Lair That Can Kill You. Why the prophecy could mean impending death. And a funny little story about a kitty caught in a tin can. That's up next - on PNN."

(Producer: Here, hold coffee mugs so it looks like you are a couple of buddies having your morning coffee while doing the news. This will be great!)

Yeah, this book is pretty funny and quirky.
It's about Petra, a human surgeon who gets drafted into the army when the gods go to war. She will spend the rest of her life living in limbo and patching up soldiers to get them back on the front lines.

Petra has a werewolf and a vampire as her tent-mates and lives next to a tar swamp. It's swamp-adjacent. There is a prank-war going on in the camp to see who can put one over on the commander. The winner gets time off. Of course, the commander is wily and the betting pool has become so huge that everyone in camp is trying hard to win. Our girl gets called into his office and she's a little concerned about the parts she has played:

Him: "You here to talk about the kraken in the officers' showers?"

"No." I didn't start it. I just relocated it.

He steepled his fingers and leaned forward. "What about the cannabis you planted in my vegetable garden?"

"Let's skip over that." I told Rodger we needed to hide it closer to the tomatoes.

His eyes narrowed. "You want to explain the snails in my combat boots?"

"That wasn't even me," I said a bit too quickly. Whoops.

Nice save....Yeah, don't put this chick on the stand in court. She'd be singing like a canary. She'd be the girl in the group that you tell to keep her mouth shut when the cops show up. Not that I would have any knowledge of things like that. It's not like I have ever tried to convince a cop that a car was one of those amphibious vehicles that we were being paid to test out in a lake. While drunk. And wearing penis-necklaces with a girl in a boa that and sash that says "bride-to-be". Never happened.

*sigh* Who was in charge of keeping her from talking? Do your job!

Petra saves a demigod and unknowingly sets off a prophecy that is supposed to stop the war. She really wants no part of it, but prophecies are pretty stubborn and have a tendency to work around your resistance. She may just have to save everyone's lives... whether she wants to or not.

She didn't ask for the cape...

I loved the weirdness and wacky things happening in this book. There is a mishmash of all paranormal creatures that is a lot of fun. The only down side, to me, was that she did a lot of angsting. I got annoyed with that after a while. Other than that, though, this book was very unique and funny.

The Monster Mash by Angie Fox
1st book in the Monster Mash trilogy.
Originally published as Immortally Yours (2012). Refreshed and updated per the author to be closer to her vision rather than the prior publisher.

This book has humor, romance, funny quirky characters, a strong female lead, and a unique story line. Remember the TV series MASH? Picture that setting with a war between the old gods vs. the young gods, doctors and soldiers that are vampires, werewolves, and fey and of course, the priest.
An engagingly good read. I’m looking forward to the updated next two books to see how they’ve changed and been modernized.

I’m not sure on this one. There were things I liked and things I didn’t. I like the whole MASH set up & they had some funny things that also reminded me of the show MASH. As for the romance I wasn’t feeling it. There was no connection in the romance department. I’m undecided if I’ll read on.

Oh, I had a lot of fun with this book! I jumped at the opportunity to read this book because the description sounded like something I would really enjoy. I have read a couple of books written by Angie Fox and knew that I like her style of writing so I felt like this book would be a good bet. It was so easy to slip into this book's world and I couldn't wait to see how things would work out.

Petra is a physician working in a MASH unit that is in place to treat injuries in the neverending war between the gods. She has been drafted to serve for the rest of her life or until either the war ends (which it probably won't). Everyone thinks that she is just a regular mortal but she has one little secret, she can see the dead. She saves the life of a demigod on her table who learns her secret and her life suddenly changes.

I really liked the characters in this book. Petra was a strong woman who worked really hard to do whatever good she could in the world. Galen was awesome. He seemed to take everything in stride but was always there ready to save the day when he was needed. Rodger just wanted to be able to be back with his family but was a good friend to Petra. Petra was not eager to jump into a relationship with Galen so it was fun to see how things ended up developing between the pair.

I think that this book was very well written. I really liked the fact that there was a good dose of humor sprinkled throughout the book. I loved the banter between the characters and thought that it added to the appeal of the story. There was a great balance of excitement, romance, and humor throughout the book and the pacing was very well done. This was a book that was very easy to read for hours at a time.

I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was a fun story that kicks off a promising series that I look forward to reading more of in the near future.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Monster MASH has a pretty cool cover and an interesting synopsis. Yet, for some odd reason I couldn't click with the book or the characters. Don't get me wrong, I tried.. and tried but nothing was happening. It didn't help that I had a migraine when I was first starting this but it also didn't help that the next day I was just bored with what was happening either.

Luckily, for me, it did have it's funny moments that would sort of break me from my weirdness. Or zombie mode of reading. Plus Petra had some likable moments as well. She is a human surgeon who unfortunately gets drafted into a war with gods. Yikes. So when she accidentally saves a demigod and gets stalked by a dagger.. well, let's just say things definitely change for her and she's no longer in Kansas.

Low and behold, she's the new Harry Potter with a prophecy of stopping the war. At this point, Petra wants absolutely nothing to do with gods, demigods, or the damn war. So the prophecy at this point seems kind of pointless because she doesn't want it either.

In the end, like I said it had some great moments here and there but a lot of boring stuff in between. I wouldn't necessarily say it was the pace by itself but a lot of other things that just weren't meshing with me or my brain.

First of all, I love the play on the tv show MASH. That was such a great show and the comparison with doctors thrown in to do field medicine in a never ending war was well done. I also liked that this had humor to balance out the prophecies and battle. This was a super easy, quick read and I'm definitely going to read the sequel.

Dr. Petra has been conscripted into a war between gods that has been going on for hundreds of years. It's a life sentence and she's just trying to get through each day. When a handsome demi god shows up mortally wounded, she accidentally puts his spirit back in his body and reveals her secret: she can see and interact with ghosts. Galen is sure that Petra is the savior from the prophecies who will stop the war, but she doesn't want to take any chances.

Petra was stubborn and I didn't like that she was so rude to Galen from the beginning. He was a nice guy who started helping the camp out, but she acted like he was an enemy and I wanted her to get over herself. She does give in to his charm eventually and I liked their relationship after. They work well together and he fit in with her group seamlessly.

The ending was a bit anticlimactic, but at least it was happy. I'm looking forward to the next book to see if Petra and Galen can stop the war for good.

2 Stars... Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in this book... It starts off somewhat intriguing, building this world set in Limbo at a MASH compound in the midst of a war between the old and new gods; here we meet Petra, a determined surgeon with a complicated past and the ability to see the dead which is a forbidden ability to have due to a prophecy that could end the war... Enter the demigod Galen who is on the verge of death; these characters lives intersect triggering the prophecy and setting off a series of events that takes readers on a crazy journey... For me, the balance of this story just felt off.. There are moments of levity and even absurdity coated over with moments of deep sadness and seriousness that simply did not play off one another well... As the story progressed, I felt pulled between these polar opposite extremes leaving me rolling my eyes and being turned off by the overall story... I also felt the MC was whiny and stagnant in her growth; by the end of the read, I was just annoyed with her and her lack of action in the storyline... Unfortunately, I will not be continuing with this series:(

Moderately entertaining fluff.

There were some great moments in this book and a few characters I wish I had more of but there were large sections that just felt like dragging a mule up a hill it had no intention of ascending.

It was fun but lacked a coherent direction.

Angie does it again! Warm characters, humour, drama and adventure. Petra is a MASH surgeon in the war of the gods. Her co-workers in the MASH unit are a variety of paranormal characters with delightful quirks and deadly skills. When Petra saves the life of Galen of Delphi her secret becomes very important. Galen believes she is part of an ancient prophecy that talks about the end of the war of the gods.
I loved the television show MASH and Angie evokes that feeling throughout this book. The gritty and mobile surgery, ICU and recovery. The pranks and jokes that make and keep them all a community and family. The grim reality of war tempered with the heart and soul of people who care. I can hardly wait for the next book in this trilogy.

While I didn’t dislike this book by any means I did find it rather anticlimactic and boring at times. The first half of the book is basically everything the blurb says it will be. There are barely any surprises and the heroine from start to finish is the most stubborn woman ever. It did take me by surprise (in a good and refreshing way) that the heroine was a 40ish year old woman. For whatever reason I expected more of a YA read probably given the title and cover but it was definitely not that. I do wish the author spent more time building the world and setting for the story, at times I felt like I was just supposed to know and assume things that were going on. The whole concept of immortals fighting other immortals in a war and basically drafting mortals and supernaturals in said war needed a lot more explanation. There were some modern mentions of pop culture that also just didn’t mesh with what was going on especially with characters who’ve been stuck in limbo for years. I know this is a reworked edition but honestly I still think it needs work and expansion. Much of the book is just the heroine working as a medic and complaining about this or that and once again being stubborn where the prophecy is concerned, particularly her role in it. There was very minimal action and sadly for me I didn’t find it as humorous as I had hoped it’d be. The romance was minimal and I felt super shocked when the heroine professed her love since she’d barely spent time with the ‘hero’ at all. Sure she felt his literal soul but I still don’t get how that equates to love. The end was also kind of flat and having finished I’m not sure what the point of it all was or what the next book will be or could even be about. While reading I just kept hoping things would become more exciting and fun. While I did find the book interesting it never got where I wanted it to. There were so many supernaturals thrown together and such a wild and imaginative setting it should have been like a jersey shore spring break blowout and instead it was more like a subpar medical drama with some supernatural elements thrown in.

Do you guys remember that show M*A*S*H? I remember watching reruns of it with my dad back in the day. Basically it’s the day-to-day goings on in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. It was zany, but at the same time, it was serious. It was a brilliant show.

You may have noticed the series name is Monster M*A*S*H which is a play off the song, yeah, but it’s primarily a paranormal version of M*A*S*H.

The heroine Petra, is part fae, but has lived a pretty human life in New Orleans, until a few years ago. The Immortal Army recruited her. And by recruited, I mean took her. See, Petra’s a doctor who specializes in the paranormal population, and when the war between the Old Gods and the New Gods got bad, they “recruited” doctors from our world. Her tent-mates are a broody vampire and a vegetarian werewolf, both of whom are great side characters.

Petra also knows that she will never leave this hot dry land where she is forever patching up the immortal gods and their armies. She can see ghosts, but in this reality, it’s a hindrance, and absolutely nothing she’d ever tell anyone. There’s a prophecy stating that someone who can see the dead will bring about the end of the war-so any time there’s a hint of someone being able to see the dead, that person is put to death. At one point Petra tried to force the prophecy, thinking she might be the one to end it all, but she was wrong-dead wrong.

One immortal who comes in is very badly injured, and he dies. But she grabs, physically grabs his spirit and shoves him back into his body. That brings up some questions: how much of that will he remember? what will he do? And once she’s touched his soul, how can she help but feel connected to him?

Gaelen wants Petra, but how can he convince her that they are fated? The dagger that she pulled out of him follows her wherever she goes, tending to lend his fate theory credence. But ever since her failed attempt at the prophecy, she tends to think fate is a bunch of crap. Gaelen has his work cut out for him.

The writing was fantastic. The humor was wry and sarcastic, the characters well developed, and the setting was so easy to visualize. I could practically feel the dry hot dust of Limbo. The descriptions were great. It's not like 1 paragraph of flowery imagery, then back to the story, it's more like the atmosphere is part of the dialogue and narrative. The description is almost its own character.

I recommend this to Urban Fantasy fans, to Paranormal Lite fans, and to Paranormal Romance fans. If you like your romance to have a lot of dry wit and steamy scenes, this is for you.

Half-fae, half-human doctor Petra Robichaud has been working in a MASH army camp in Limbo for seven years, after being conscripted into the New Gods’ Army, in their endless war against the old gods. Her life is an endless cycle of patching up soldiers and sending them back out to fight again, though it’s easier when most of your patients have super-healing. Except when they leave it too long to come in and you have to re-break bones to put them back together straight.

It’s rare for one of the immortals to die on her operating table, but that’s exactly what happens with demigod Galen of Delphi when a cursed dagger splinters apart inside his body and Petra can’t catch all the pieces. Until Petra uses the ability she’s thus far kept hidden… because it’s outlawed and likely to get her killed, or worse, eternally tortured in any one of a myriad of horribly creative ways. She can see and talk to the souls of the dead. And as Galen of Delphi’s soul leaves his body… she grabs it and stuffs it back in.

Now she has to hope Galen doesn’t remember anything when he wakes up. And pray that she hasn’t just triggered the prophecy which will definitely get her killed when the gods figure out she’s the one prophesied to end the war.

This is funny and clever and I absolutely love Petra, who’s 42 and both old enough to be cynical and yet incredibly young compared to the immortals she’s living amongst. Galen, as a hero, is a bit hard to get to know as the story is told in Petra’s first-person POV; he’s a bit Practically Perfect In Every Way, but as I understand this is a trilogy perhaps we get a bit deeper into his personality in the later books.

The worldbuilding here is amazing. It’s a really huge concept and the author does a great job of spreading the necessary information out rather than doing big expository infodumps. One thing I especially liked is that there is no real good and evil; Petra is in the New Gods’ Army but it’s clear she has no high opinion of them. And realistically, any overlords who give their conscripts 20 minutes of accrued leave per year of service (and don’t allow it to be used until at least a week is accrued) aren’t exactly worthy of loyalty.

I feel like the romance here suffered a bit because there was So Much Plot. It’s really more urban fantasy than paranormal romance; there’s so much plot the romance is spread out over a trilogy and the declaration of love did feel very sudden because Petra and Galen hadn’t actually gotten to spend all that much time together. I genuinely loved the side characters - Jeffe the sphinx was my absolute favourite - and I definitely want to read the rest of the trilogy, but this does have some flaws, mainly with Galen’s characterization. I don’t think being solely in Petra’s first-person POV did this book any favours. I’ll give it four and a half stars.

The Monster MASH by Angie Fox has Dr. Petra Robichaud working in a MASH unit in limbo after being recruited (shanghaied is more liked it) by the New God Army. She has spent the last seven years trying to save the creatures who are fighting in the war between the Old Gods and the New Gods. Petra has a special gift that could get her killed if the gods become aware of it. The only person in her life who knew the truth was her father. Commander Galen of Delphi is on her table and his soul is leaving his body. Petra cannot let him die. She grabs his soul and puts it back into his body bringing Galen back to life. Petra hopes Galen does not remember what happened, but she knows that he looked right at her. Unfortunately, Galen does recall what happened despite Petra’s denials. He believes Petra is the one mentioned in an old prophecy that could finally end the very long war. When prophecies begin coming true, Petra can no longer ignore the inevitable. Petra cannot help but wonder what she must sacrifice in order to end the lengthy war. The Monster MASH is the beginning of a new series for Angie Fox. It is a departure from The Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries with Verity and Frankie. Petra is a strong woman who is used to taking care of others and having no personal life. I did find some of Petra’s characteristics to be contrary with this image especially where romance is concerned. There are a variety of eclectic characters including a vegetarian werewolf, a diva vampire, a demigod warrior, and a riddle happy sphinx security guard. I thought the authors descriptive word imagery brought the scenes to life. I could imagine the stark landscape of limbo where Petra is forced to live and work. There are a couple of humorous moments. I wish there had been more of them to lighten up the story. The Monster MASH has danger, romance, creepy monsters, controlling gods, conflict, death, and horrible food. For those who like the series MASH and paranormal stories, you will enjoy reading The Monster MASH. It is a quick story to read with a preview of what happens in the next installment. The Monster MASH is an intriguing new paranormal series with a dangerous demigod, problematic roommates, nosy neighbors, multiplying swamp lizards, noteworthy news on the paranormal network, a security sphinx, and a physician with a private power.

The Monster MASH by Angie Fox is the first in a paranormal trilogy set in Limbo. This book was originally released in 2012 under a different title but was revised by the author for this new release.

Ms. Fox's descriptive writing made Limbo and the surrounding battlefields feel very real while I was reading. The characters are eclectic with werewolves, vampires, mortal humans, and demigods who are all stationed at a MASH unit during a war between the old gods and the new gods. I found some of the story to be sad as the attitude of the gods toward the soldiers and MASH personnel is that are insignificant in their war. There are some serious action and suspense sprinkled with some lighter moments which did help to lighten the story as it progressed. A swiftly paced plot with action, humor and a touch of romance.

The author provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

From http://readingandwritingurbanfantasy....

At a Glance
I wasn't blown away by Immortally Yours, but I found the concept refreshing and the characters entertaining. It was a good read overall.

The Good
Here's The Story...
Petra is a doctor in a world of paranormal beings. Forced to leave her life on earth because of her half-fairy blood, she's now a surgeon for the soldiers of the war of Gods. She wants nothing to do with the tedious war, but she has no choice. Her desolate existence brightens when a soldier/demi-god comes across her table. Seeing that the demi-god (Galen) is about to die, Petra keeps his soul tethered to his body with her unique ability to interact with ghosts. With Galen now alive and kicking, Petra fears that he will reveal her secret ability, an ability that can mean her torturous death. Because her gift may just be the answer to ending the war. Can Galen convince Petra of her destiny? Will Petra let someone into her heart even though it means lowering her defenses?

A War of Gods...
Immortally Yours is a fast and fun read. The premise is very interesting. I am a sucker for Greek Mythology. A war between old and new Gods has been waged and the good little soldiers and doctors, no matter if they are half-human or pure paranormal, all have to do their part...forever. These are life sentences for non-immortals since the war shows no signs of slowing down. Luckily, or unluckily, good ol' Dr. Petra Robichaud is destined to stop this silly war, or is she?

Petra and Galen...
Petra has strength and determination when it comes to her job, but when it comes to her powers and future, she is a delicate flower. She tried to push the war-stopping prophecy once before and nothing but bad came out of it. Now, she truly believes she is not the one destined to end the fighting. Galen thinks differently. He has seen her at her most vulnerable and her most powerful. He sees the truth, even if he doesn't have proof. He has faith that Petra will do the right thing because he believes in her even when she doesn't believe in herself. I was awed by how much faith Galen puts into their destiny. It was a nice change for the girl to be the pessimist and the guy to be all love and peace (of sorts). Don't get me wrong, Galen is still dangerous, strong, and lethal in many ways, but he also has this soft side I found super cute. Petra's reluctance and self-pitying attitude was a little annoying, but I think she grew as a character in the end, so it didn't bother me too much. Gotta have the drama somewhere, right?

Extra Spice...
The side characters had a wealth of personality. Each one had their own obvious story that I wish I knew more about. Petra's roommates actually made it more fun reading this book. The whole book has this somewhat light-hearted, funny feel to it, even when things got serious. The world-building was superb as well. This is like no other book I have ever read. The odd creatures gave it the extra spice it needed to keep things interesting.

The Bad
It took me a little while to get into the story for some reason. I am not sure why, it just didn't grab me right away.

I feel like the story skipped some development stages. Like the relationship building is almost nonexistence. Petra and Galen don't really spend too much time together before they love each other and their familiarity with each other was just odd. And character motivations are very vague.

This one is a little hard to explain, but I felt like parts of conversations were skipped. I had to reread some convos to see if I missed something because someone's response didn't make sense based on what was just said.

The whole story was a little hokey, and the ending was very convenient.

The Snuggly
We definitely get sex. It took some time to get full-blown sex scene, but when it finally happened, I was pink in the cheeks. Hehe. The romance was really hot, no doubt about that.

Overall
This was the first book I have read by Angie Fox. I might not have fallen in love with Immortally Yours, but I enjoyed reading it. I think the unique premise and world-building is definitely a plus and deserves praise. I would recommend this book to those who are looking for a different kind of paranormal romance.

The description for this book made me excited for this book. I loved the show MASH so I had high expectations.

description

Dr. Petra is serving army surgeon, involuntarily drafted in a war between the old gods and new. The war is never-ending and she will likely die at the front. Commander Galen of Delphi shows up one day, fatally injured and one small, dangerous act brings him back from death. Basically this rash resurrection to use her secret power not only fulfilled a prophesy but brought her life at risk, tying Galen and Petra together.

This is a weird, quick, quirky book with funny moments and great characters. Petra is a strong woman, doing her best, trying to make a difference by saving lives. I loved her trying to avoid Galen and how he lowkey manipulate her friends by being nice and kind and generous. Rodger annoyed me with his avoidance issues and the undercurrent message throughout the book that Petra did not have similar worth than Rodger because she didn't have a family. Personally Jeffe was my favourite character with his sincerity and integrity. I wish he should up more (especially at inconvenient times).

I wish liked this book more and clicked with the overall storyline. The love story was way too fast for me as an enemies-to-lovers stan only the humour parred me over and potential hero sacrifice was going to happen to stop the war. Once Petra and Galen decided to date (around mark 65%) I became bored. Petra's interior monologue became tedious and repetitive and the stakes didn't feel real.

I tend to like stories with prophesies, especially when the interpretation can be widely different from what you think or what they characters expect. The prophesies in this book had potential but didn't live up to the realisation of them.

The ending was anti-climactic and I was hoping that Galen ended up a ghost at the end for a cool twist but alas it was not meant to be. How the war was put on hold didn't feel deserved and felt convenient.

description

I probably won't continue with the series.

I hope I don't sound biased, since I got the book from the author, and its come on my birthday, so I consider it as my gift, lol! Ehm, okay. I don't know about MASH show since I'm not Americans, but I like the different twist of paranormal romance that Angie Fox use for Immortally Yours. First POV is not my favorite and I often found Petra Robichaud, the heroine, too annoying and insecure. She's a doctor who just took from her mortal world and had an order to heal the Gods army (the new and old Gods have war in this story).

All changes after she meet Galen of Delphi. Alpha male to the core, but glad he's not all "Tarzan" to Petra. He also said to her to have faith even Petra already lost hope since she don't know when the war will end. Beside those two, we will introduced to Petra's colleagues in MASH, a werewolf, vampire, ghost, demi gods alike, and also sphinx! Immortally Yours is so unique, and I definitely want to read more from Angie Fox.

Oh, I think Petra is bordering the TSTL heroine, but more like she choose the wrong decisions. Not all her fault, though. And she love reading romance novels! There's mention of Undead or Unwed by Mary Janice Davidson, No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Charlaine Harris too. I think the fact Petra is romance novel avid readers redeem her insecure personality for me ;)

Conscripted to MASH unit staffed by paranormals, mortal Dr Petra secret comes to attention of a dying demigod when she saves him and now he is sure she is key to the prophecy to end the war between the Old gods and the New gods. There's some fun stuff in the background of this - pranks and wacky fellow staffers - that invokes the feel of the old MasH TV show. I thought this was entertaining even as Petra tries to fight her fate. I was really excited to get this ARC, I have always wanted to read this series and now author Fox is apparently reworking and re-releasing the three book series with slightly different titles. I am looking forward to the next.

This is definitely a quirky, unusual fantasy book, set within a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital where Petra Robichaud works as a surgeon. The catch is that the MASH unit is located near a tarpit in Limbo and the war is a never-ending one. A fair number of the patients they are treating are immortal, which poses its own problems, apparently. If you don’t get to them quickly, bones set at wrong angles and massive injuries can have organs healing into peculiar shapes, or unable to function exactly as they were intended. Such is the life of a surgeon dealing with immortals, among other types of soldiers…

She shares her tent with a depressed werewolf, who is missing his family horribly and a perpetually annoyed vampire, who gets very fed up when he emerges from his coffin to discover his cuff links have been used to fix a tear in the canvas. As in the old TV show, while the overall setting has the capacity to be utterly grim, the madcap humour the medics use to keep themselves sane is used within this book. Fox has re-issued this one to feature more on the humour – and I think her instincts were spot on. I couldn’t have got to the end if it had been a miserable ansty read, all about Petra’s personal tragedy.

As it is, we learn what makes her quite so grouchy about two-thirds through what is essentially a romance. Though the ongoing story of the war and the big game-changer that suddenly makes it far more critical to be on the winning side does play a major part in the ongoing narrative. Overall, I enjoyed the originality of the story and I thought that most of the time, the developing love story was handled well, though towards the end it did get just a tad mushy for my taste. But bear in mind, I generally enjoy my romances as a side dish, rather than the main course. Recommended for fantasy fans looking for something a bit different. While I obtained an arc of The Monster MASH from the publishers via Netgalley, the opinions I have expressed are unbiased and my own.

When the gods draft, you get hours to wrap up your life on Earth, sent to Limbo and earn 20 minutes back on Earth per year service, but can't take until you accrue at least a week. Sounds lovely, doesn't it?

What I enjoyed:
* I loved Galen. He has been a soldier forever, but he easily friends others and helps everyone have hope. His interactions with the staff at MASH are my favorite parts of the book.
* The characters are interesting. You have the moody vampire, missing his family werewolf, mysterious commander and plenty of practical jokes
* Petra was just ok for me. She is a very dedicated doctor, but doesn't really have much personality beyond that.

What could have been better:
* It started slow
* While the world building is unique, it is almost too dark. The thought of constant war over something stupid ages ago is hard to take.
* Some grammatical errors - tonight was to night a few times

Synopsis:

(Goodreads)

Review:

Petra is a surgeon who is working in a MASH unit that is in Purgatory trying to save all those that need her help. Galen shows up on her operating table and he is in bad shape. Before he can die, Petra sees his soul and slips it back into his body. Petra was not supposed to do that and she is breaking the rules. You see, Petra can see the dead and if anyone ever finds out, she could be killed. Now she has to be sure that Gaken never tells anyone.

This book has lots of twists and turns and some very different characters. I thought that Petra acted younger than her forty years a lot of the time, especially where Galen was concerned. A lot of the time I wanted her to act her age and be more mature. That is only my opinion and others may not feel that way. There was a vast array of other characters, from Werewolves to Vampires, just to name a few, and they all had their own stories to tell.

I enjoyed the fact that this book was unlike anything else I have read. I also enjoyed the fact that it reminded me of the television show MASH.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys humorous fantasy.

I picked this one because I had no internet and no television and I needed noise. :D

I love Angie Fox's Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. I loved M*A*S*H*. I enjoyed Hollis McCarthy as she read the Jayne Frost mysteries. So this seemed like a no brainer. Well. It fell kinda flat. They definitely captured the feel of the old MASH series with the audio version and the whole "incoming wounded" thing. (Not exactly, but the idea). I liked the idea of the immortals rather than other entries into Urban Fantasy. There were just so many things that could have worked well together here. For me, however, they just didn't. I couldn't even tell you why. Maybe it was just too much (too quick) romance. Maybe I should have read it and not listened to it. Maybe I wasn't in the correct frame of mind. I just didn't really care about Petra, and I think that was my biggest problem.

Ultimately, it really should have worked. It just didn't. I might continue, but the next books don't have a digital/audio bundle which is preventing me. I'd have to use a credit. ;)

Four and a half
This was a fabulous start to a new series and honestly I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. Does anyone remember the tv show Mash from the 70's because this has exactly that feel. Medics working flat out to put soldiers back together knowing that they are only going to get hurt again. Banter, practical jokes and general sticking your nose where it doesn't belong because everyone is teetering on the brink, exhausted and trying to stay sane. That my fellow reader is the end of the similarities because this war is fought between the Old Gods and the New Gods with Demi Gods and Mortals conscripted. The Mash unit of the New Gods is in Limbo and that's where we meet Petra a human doctor trying to just keep going. Petra has a deadly secret though because she can see the dead and its absolutely imperative that no one realises because thanks to an ancient prophecy it would mean she would be put to death ! So what can she do when not only does she literally push someone's soul back into their body but when he wakes the stubborn Commander just won't leave her alone ?
I really enjoyed this and that's probably because it's completely different to anything else I've read. Perhaps not laugh out loud funny but manic and compulsive reading. The romance didn't really fit very well for me but I'm invested enough to want Petra and Galen to get a happy ending. I particularly enjoyed the second half as things became much clearer and the supporting characters felt more fleshed out. I feel this could definitely entertain those who enjoy paranormal stories with a twist of humour and I look forward to reading more about Petra and her adventures.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

*Thoughts*

The Monster MASH, is the first installment in author Angie Fox's Monster M*A*S*H series. This book is the updated version of Immortally Yours. After the fall of Troy, the younger Gods declared war on the old Gods. The Gods are also fighting over which side would get what Capitals (Atlantis or El Dorado). For those who did not know if before, MASH stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. 42-year old Dr. Petra Robichaud is a MASH doctor in the war between the old Gods and new Gods. She serves the New Gods in Limbo. She was a drafted (forced recruitment) from New Orleans. As a half fairy, she is expected to serve until the day she dies, or the war ends, which ever comes first.

I read the original books in this series and this is a re-release with some revisions. In this first book there is a war between the old gods and new gods. Petra is a doctor in limbo in one of the MASH units for the new gods. She also has a hidden ability that could bring peace and could also get her killed if anyone finds out. Galen is a demigod and soldier and Petra's patient. Together they work to find a way to end the war. I like the variety of supernaturals - werewolves, fae, vampires, imps and more. I think Galen and Petra will develop into a good love story.
Some things that happen remind me of the TV show MASH. The way they all try to outdo each other to win the bet on who can prank the head of the MASH unit made me laugh. There's even a "Father Mulcahy" in the story along the lines of the TV show Mash.
Overall I enjoyed the revisions made to this book from the original version and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Honest rating: 1.5 stars

You can view the original review on my blog Read. Sleep. Repeat.

I am a complete and total sucker for books that have:

A.) Zombies
B.) Vampires
C.) Mythology (as a whole)

So imagine how cool I thought this book was going to be when I saw there was a sphinx, vampire, werewolf AND "gorgeous but stubborn demi-god" and some type of crazy "oracle"? Then you throw in the whole "I see dead people" bit and I'm like:

Photobucket

I mean how could it not be awesome?!! Easy, the heroine was an annoying dumb ass who made me throw the book. Seriously I threw it! I've never EVER thrown a book; not even that horrid one Ashes . This was me:

Photobucket
only instead of pasta it was this damn book.

I swear I went into this book with average expectations. I knew it was going to have a few cheesy parts and I knew Petra was going to aggravate me a little but I never thought Petra would royally piss me off and the story to be boring. I mean COME ONE! It is a war going on between the new Gods and the old Gods, the story is set in limbo, AND there is a DEMI-GOD! This story should be nothing but action. I should have been coming down from a adrenaline high from all the action this book should have had, but instead I just rolled over and went to sleep. Dreaming of beating the crap out of Petra.

Let's just move on before I get pissed off all over again.

The characters:

Hmm what can I say about the characters? Let's start with my favorite. Jeffe the sphinx. How could I not love him? He wanted to eat people just for answering a riddle wrong! That has to equal amazing in some way. Unfortunately Jeffe was the only character I truly liked. Rodger (the werewolf roommate) was a big old mess. He had a drinking problem, he was home sick, and worst of all he had a tendency to get that "look at me" syndrome. Man up Dr. Rodger and grow a pair! Marius (the vampire roommate) was your typical moody vampire. Galen (our demi-God) was...how do I put this nicely? He was nuts. I love a sex-on-a-stick man in uniform as much as the next woman but he was really intense with this whole "if we die it is for the greater good" stuff. I understand wanting to save the world but don't sign me up to jump off a bridge just because you want to. Then you have Petra. Please hold while I practice my breathing exercises.

In 1. Out 2. In 1. Out 2.

Ok I think I'm ready to take on the character of Petra. I know in most books where there is a "prophecy" to fulfill the hero/heroine NEVER believes they are the ones the prophecy is talking about. So I wasn't to aggravated by Petra's initial denial. If it was me I would be the same way. But as the book progressed and it became more and more apparent that Petra was "the one" she stayed in denial. And believe me it was so obvious the only thing missing was a neon sign with her face on it that read "answer to the prophecy" flashing in rainbow colors.

If that doesn't aggravate you, how about the fact that she was all but humping Galen's leg from the moment they met but was in complete and utter denial that there was any chemistry between them. I get that she was "afraid". I would have pissed my pants in that situation, but there comes a time in every woman's life when you have to put on your big girl panties.

My final rating of 1.5 stars is ONLY because of the carnivorous scorpions, they gave me hope that the action would come soon. For lying to me they got what they deserved.

Angie Fox Immortally Yours
Angie Fox, author of the fan favorite Accidental Demon Slayer (Biker Witches) series, has come up with a fantastic new series that blends the paranormal with immortal gods and sets them in a war zone that recruits vampires, weres, demi-gods and humans with not so pure blood, to patch up the casualties of the war in a MASH unit.
Old gods vs. new gods are battling to the death with the souls of the humans both fighting to save the wounded and fighting the battles on the line as well as the entire human existence but there is a chance that the war could be stopped or at least slowed to a standstill if the Oracles predictions come true and the three steps to the prophecy come to pass. Dr. Petra Robichaud had left behind her New Orleans home and had been patching up wounded in the 3063rd for a few years. Years that she knew she would never see her home or family again. Low man in the OR, she is thrust into a complicated surgery that leads to her saving a particularly sexy immortal from certain death and possibly setting in motion the first of the Oracles prophecies. Having the demi-god war hero stick around came with a few perks that she didn’t mind but when they have to face a few life and death decisions if they are to complete the next two prophecies she is torn between saving humanity and saving the demi-god who had stolen her heart.
Commander Galen of Delphi should have been dead on the table from the bronze dagger that an unknown assailant had plunged into his side. If not for the beautiful doctor he would have lost his immortal life to the cause. Getting closer to the woman, thanks to a series of mysterious paperwork snafus, is a nice diversion for a man married to his military career but when he realizes her secret he must protect her and guide her towards a destiny prophesized by the Oracles. Staying in camp he brings not only a few perks to those keeping their side alive but while protecting Petra and guiding her to their destiny he finds a connection that he had never imagined in immortal life.
Angie Fox makes me laugh out loud. Her characters are always a combination of wit, brains, sex-on-a-stick, snark and totally addictive. Petra is a strong and smart heroine, Galen is a gallant and sexy hero and the rest of the cast merge together to not only steal the show but give them the support they need to find a way through the chaos and crap thrown in their way. Only Ms. Fox could come up with the premise of a MASH unit with for immortals run by the likes of a Drakkar smelling vampire with possible secrets about his sexuality, a werewolf how is so homesick for his family he adopt various creatures (aka dinosaurs) out of the tar swamp, a security guard sphinx and a Colonel that everyone in camp is trying to pull one over on in hopes of getting some R&R topside. Petra and Galen’s path to find happiness was fun, frisky, sexy and a must read! Grab this one now and pre-order the next one STAT!

I loved this book! When I finished it, I wish I had the next already, I think I'd read it immediately.

Petra is a physician, a mortal one, she's human and half-fae and she has the abbility to see ghosts. She works - involuntarily - at a MASH unit treating hurt soldiers from the war between the old-gods and the new-gods (a war that started 500 years ago).

One day, she treats Galen and, given her supernatural abbility, she keeps his sould from leaving him and, so, not letting him die.

Being atracted for each other, they start a romantic relationship that will be threatened by the war and a prophecy, that predicts the end of the war by, it seems, Petra.

I loved this book - yes, I'm know I'm repeating myself. Angie Fox's writing is easy, the story developing is captivating, the world of the Limbo is original and interesting and, despite the monsters and the tar swamp, is incredibly appealing. The characters, not only the main ones but also the secondary ones, are so funny and they entered my heart immediately.

This book is perfect: interesting in the plot, romantic and sexy, engaging. It has a love story, it has friendship, swetness, it's funny and serious when necessary and there's always developments that keeps the reading interesting from page one.
