The type of mattress you sleep on can majorly affect your sleep quality. Our sleep survey found that the average person wakes up more than twice a week during the night due to pain and discomfort. We also found that a partner rolling over wakes up over a quarter of respondents. If these issues sound familiar, then a pocket-sprung mattress may be the solution for you.
Why does this kind of mattress help you get a great night's sleep?
Pocket springs' clever responsiveness is ideal for anyone who suffers from aches and pains. Unlike an open coil or traditional spring mattress, only the part of the mattress that experiences pressure reacts. This means the areas of your body that need it most are contoured and supported whenever you're relaxing or snoozing in bed.
And, because the pocket springs react freely to your movement, they are ideal if you share your bed – partner or pet, we don’t judge. Say goodbye to those "roll-together" moments that interrupt your sleep.
Another cool benefit (literally) is this mattress’ temperature-regulating properties. Because of the pocket spring structure, there’s plenty of airflow through the mattress, which helps cool you throughout the night. And due to the responsiveness of the mattresses, they are ideal for front and back sleepers who like to stretch out at night.
How many pocket springs do I need?
Well, that all depends on the level of support you need. More springs mean more support, due to the increased points of contact with your body. However, that doesn't mean you should always choose the mattress with the most pocket springs.
Anything lower than 1000 is considered a low spring rate, and anything between 1500 and 2000 is a high spring rate. Springs can also be layered, such as in mattresses with over 2000 springs, which are ideal for those who prefer a firmer mattress that responds to movement.
Which firmness grade should I choose?
Whilst the number of springs can increase firmness, the firmness grade also depends on how the mattress is constructed. Pocket sprung mattresses come in soft, medium, firm, very firm and split tension. The firmness grade you choose is dependent on your sleeping preferences and weight. See our mattress buying guide for a breakdown of firmness ratings, or pop into a store to test out our Sleepmatch technology to find the perfect pocket-sprung mattress.
What types of pocket sprung mattresses are available?
Combination, gel pocket and kids pocket sprung mattresses are on offer, and each of them can help with specific problems.
Combination pocket sprung mattresses
A combination or hybrid mattress is the best of both worlds. These mattresses have a pocket spring structure and a layer of memory foam. This is a great choice for those who like the moulded feeling of memory foam but prefer a more supportive base.
Gel pocket sprung mattress
If you tend to get hot while you sleep, a gel mattress is a great investment. These spring mattresses have a layer of cooling gel, which helps to regulate your temperature as well as additional comfort. Like memory foam, gel mattresses contour to your body but have better breathability to keep you cool while you sleep. Comfy nights with kids' pocket sprung mattresses
The Little Big Dreams kids’ mattresses have a great selection designed especially to support your little ones. Not only do they have a removable cover for easy washing, but they are also anti-allergy and water-repellent, helping to keep your child clean and comfortable at night. Available in standard single, euro single, and cot sizes, there's one for every stage of your child’s development.
What sizes are available?
Our pocket spring mattresses come in a huge variety of sizes, from small singles to super king. Choosing a single pocket spring mattress is ideal for a guest room due to the flexibility of the mattress and its ability to respond to your guest's sleeping position. A single pocket spring is also great for teens as they grow and adapt their sleeping position. A double pocket spring mattress is perfect for couples or for anyone who likes to use the whole mattress whilst sleeping. And for those extravagant bedrooms with statement beds, you can find king-size and super-king options, too!
