About

THE BASEBALL PROJECT:

The Baseball Project brings together members from such noteworthy ‘80s alternative bands as R.E.M., The Dream Syndicate, and The Young Fresh Fellows. The all-star band puts familiar folk-rock elements like lush harmonies and chiming guitars in an exciting new context with lyrics that focus exclusively on America’s pastime, baseball. The nostalgia-soaked songs tell bittersweet narratives about larger-than-life heroes that resonate with sports fans and music fans alike. On stage it’s clear the band is a super group—-the members expertly wow the crowd and perform with a joy that’s completely infectious. When The Baseball Project steps up to the plate, ticket buyers can expect to see the band hit it out of the park.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Not many bands can say that they formed at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. In 2007, guitarist/vocalists Steve Wynn and Scott McCaughey came up with the idea for The Baseball Project while watching their friends Peter Buck (guitar) and Mike Mills (bass) be honored for their work with R.E.M. When Wynn’s wife Linda Pitmon joined on the drums, their roster was officially set. The all-star group released their first album Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails that year to rave reviews. When R.E.M. broke up in 2011, Mills and Buck had time to focus on The Baseball Project full-time. Later that year they released their second album Volume 2: High and Inside to similarly high praise. In support of the album, the band went on a tour of the US and was even invited to play before some Spring Training games at Arizona’s Cactus League. Following the release of their album 3rd in 2014, the band has continued to wow fans at venues across the country.

Baseball Band Knocks it Out of the Park

    by Richard on 8/21/23

The Baseball Project is indeed a supergroup, comprised of musicians from bands including REM and The Dream Syndicate. Their recently released album Grand Salami Time, figured large in this concert and they delivered big time. With three guitars riffing (including Peter Buck ex-REM) and lead vocals shared among four of the five band members, the music rocked the intimate Brooklyn Made venue. A concert entirely composed of music about baseball? Yes! More, please!

    A Walk-Off Grand Slam Homer!

    by CitizenSullivan on 8/21/23

Two of my favorite things are baseball and 1980s college radio rock. The Baseball Project combined them with a fantastic set in Brooklyn. With members of the Dream Syndicate, REM, the Minus 5, and Zuzu's Petals (plus a pinch hitter from the Long Ryders), this team came to play and delivered like David Ortiz in the clutch!

NRBQ #TERRY ADAMS #THE WHOLE BAND

by Ssienk on 4/1/16St Augustine Amphitheatre Backyard Stage - St Augustine

Absolutely love NRBQ, Terry and company are absolutely true to the vision. I've been watching these guys since the 70s. Through all the changes Terry's vision and the spectrum of sound they cover is simply amazing. I've been a professional keyboardist since I was a young teenager in Northampton Massachusetts. Seeing and hearing NRBQ is always like getting a complete musical transfusion. This show was absolutely perfect. The atmosphere was truly friendly, everyone would stop and speak with each other, a nice change from the stay out of my space environment you get most everywhere these days. Can't wait until y'all are back in Florida

    NRBQ St Augustine FL

by mkostek on 3/28/16St Augustine Amphitheatre Backyard Stage - St Augustine

"This band changed my life. After our set I'm gonna be down front with all of you watching the great NRBQ!" That was Peter Buck, speaking for me, and many of the folks ready for another magic night of Florida NRBQ. Magic things happen when digging Uncle Q, and a short time later Marta, Richard Bean and I were indeed down front along with opening act Baseball Projects Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Steve Wynn and Linda Pitmon cheering on another great night of Terry's gran combo. Buck knows well his Q, singing along on many songs, whooping up the sweet twangs coming from Scott's guitar, and marveling at the spell Klem cast with his "Get a Grip" dance. Where else can you stand six feet from the best keyboard rocker ever and see Terry make it all go round and round? This night was more originals than Boca (One N Only, Keep This Love Goin', Boozoo, Waitin' on My Sweetie Pie, Want You Bad, Green Lights, Get a Grip, We Travel the Spaceways, Sourpuss, as I mostly recall) and great requests played (Florida, When Things Was Cheap, Talk To Me), and Richie's favorite, Fightin' Fightin' Fightin' Back). The band got tighter and swung harder than in Boca Raton (Ain't Got a Home, Get Rhythm). Peter hugged Mike Mills when Terry gave "Everybody, including the Baseball Project, some good advice: Remember your name and address And telephone number, too And if, someday, you lose your way You know just what to do, Walk up to the kind policeman The very first one you meet And simply say, "I’ve lost my way, I cannot find my street, But I know my name and address And telephone number too." Then he’ll be kind And help you to find The dear ones who wait for you.

    You MUST see this band

by seenPettylots on 5/6/15Rough Trade NYC - Brooklyn

The Baseball Project rock! It is just that simple. And fans of indie/alternative rock of the 1980s and 1990s should understand that for very little money, you get an evening with Steve Wynn, Scott McCaughey and Mike Mills (and sometimes even Peter Buck). Linda Pitmon, the band's drummer, is also amazing. And these are the nicest people in the business, as they are available to chat with the fans before and after the show. Seriously, you must see this band!

    Great Band, Great Venue

by mikeystrikes on 8/5/14Rough Trade NYC - Brooklyn

The Minus 5 & The Baseball Project @ Rough Trade Records was a great combination of a great venue and 2 great bands (both were actually the same band). Rough Trade is an old school record store with quality vinyl, cd's, & cassettes. The Baseball Project with 3 albums is one of the best bands out there, mixing great music with baseball related lyrics.
