Can I get travel insurance that covers COVID-19?

Yes, you can still compare and purchase travel insurance with COVID-19 cover from Confused.com. All of our providers offer emergency medical treatment and repatriation (returning to the UK) for COVID-19 claims.

A number of our providers offer further COVID-19 related cover such as holiday cancellations and accommodation costs and denied boarding. Be sure to check the details of your policy carefully as different providers will offer different policy enhancements.

It's important to note that if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), you won't be covered by any travel insurance policy you buy.

What’s travel insurance?

Travel insurance usually covers you if your travel plans are cancelled, if your items are lost or stolen or if you need to pay medical expenses while abroad or in the UK. It could also cover any pre-existing medical conditions you may have.

Travel insurance is particularly important now the UK has left the EU. For UK residents, once your European Health Card expires you won’t be covered in Europe. And in terms of coronavirus, ensuring you’re as protected as can be while away is paramount.

There are different levels of cover available:

  • Single cover for a one-off holiday
  • An annual policy if you’ve got lots of trips
  • Add-ons like winter sports or cruise cover
  • Business cover options

Can I get travel insurance with a pre-existing medical condition?

It depends on your insurer – some insurers we compare could cover pre-existing medical conditions. Conditions that may be covered could include cancer, stroke, and serious heart conditions.

Some insurers might not cover you if you already have a serious medical condition, or if you have a number of conditions. Others might offer insurance but at a much higher price. Please ensure to check your policy documents to see if pre-existing medical conditions are covered before you buy.

If you’re unable to find suitable cover, the can Money and Pension Service (MaPS) has set up a directory of insurers with Money Helper. See the list of providers willing to cover pre-existing medical conditions. Or you can telephone 0800 138 7777.

What do I do after my EHIC expires?

The Global Health Insurance card (GHIC) is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replacement now the UK has left the EU. When your EHIC expires, you can get a GHIC from the NHS website. The GHIC will entitle you to state-level healthcare.

This doesn’t mean the healthcare you receive is always free but could be provided at a lower cost. That’s why it makes sense to have an EHIC or GHIC plus a European travel policy. This way, you can be confident that if you need any medical treatment or have to pay any unexpected costs, you won’t have to foot the bill.
