About

EZRA FURMAN IN CONCERT:

Gender-bending punk progeny Ezra Furman makes psych-tinged garage rock as edgy and vibrant as the red lipstick and shock-blue hair he flaunts on stage. Furman and his band The Boy-Friends whip up quite a show in concert, cranking their amps to the max and tearing through their subversive tunes with snarling energy and plenty of panache. Furman’s music is a modern-day answer to gritty, scrappy ‘70s outfits like The Ramones and The New York Dolls, but the thoughtful lyrics and creative instrumentation of nuggets like “Restless Year” add an inspired layer of emotional nuance to those tried-and-true Downtown sounds. Above all else Furman is a natural showman, and his blend of tough-guy punk attitude and heart-on-sleeve vulnerability make for a dynamic and unpredictable concert experience for totally stoked ticket buyers.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Chicago-born Ezra Furman began his rock and roll journey at Tufts University in 2006 when he formed Ezra Furman and the Harpoons with some classmates. The band released three albums including 2011’s critically acclaimed Mysterious Power, which they supported with a US headlining tour before breaking up. Furman made his solo debut the following year with the album The Year of No Returning, which he recorded and released with funds raised on Kickstarter. He put together a backing band for a tour in support of the album, and the lineup stuck – in 2013 the group released the album Day of the Dog under the moniker Ezra Furman and the Boy-Friends. Since then they’ve become critical darlings in both the US and the UK, flooring fans and critics alike with their live-wire performances and acclaimed albums like 2015’s Perpetual Motion People.

    Punk

by Jake on 5/22/22Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Great time, first time I was at a show where most of the crowd was queer, and it’s such a better energy and atmosphere, led by an incredible artist. Also, having two women-led punk-rock bands with such great sounds was so refreshing after Covid.

    Bombastic!!!!

by Captain on 2/28/20191 Toole - Tucson

Ezra is a powerhouse of stupendous talent and lifesaving angst entwined in a rare conglomeration of real emotions and evolutionary musical composition. Breeding new ground of contemporary grunge/punk/rock; elevated by an early Bowie wisp in his softer voice and music that crescendo’s into his own dimension of cathartic release! Ripping from his guitar’s primal scream of psychological warfare against the dark forces of despair comes a voice of unquenchable thirst and lyrical mastery! 191 E. Toole is a small venue and the ideal place to look an artist in the eye and see the truth of their musical awareness. Ezra reveals his man/woman/child persona to all who enters his musical fire. Buoyed by band members that understand the wants and needs of Ezra - adds fuel to the flame! Truly a magnificent combination!! The pre-show band introducing the audience to the evening delights is a genuine sound worthy of attention in their own right. Kelly finds his own niche and beat in a profound punch of stomach twisting riffs and choice gifts to the head and ear and feet of the listener! A rich banquet of talent long overdue for greater recognition in this world. This show is a bombastic and realistic insight into a group of artists’ third eyes! Find a way to see them wherever they may go!

    Pure rock and roll

by Russ on 5/7/19Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Brought a handful of friends who are passionate about music but didn’t know Ezra from Adam. He greatly impressed them all. We could feel his pure energy. Only disappointments were: no sax player (Tim Sandusky) and no encore.

one of the best touring artists out there

by oyvytghvhjnuijkbu77777777 on 2/13/16Bowery Ballroom - New York

No one puts on a show like Ezra. He always drums up a connection with his audience, and you feel like you're really making an impact on him just by being there, which must mean he's making an impact on you. Ezra is one of the few musicians I can think of that makes an audience feel like family.
