"The scandalous rape of Ancient Egypt is a historical vignette of greed, vanity, and dedicated archaeological research. It is a tale vividly told by renowned archaeology author, Brian Fagan, with characters that include the ancient historian Herodotus; Theban tomb robbers; obelisk-stealing Romans; Coptic Christians determined to erase the heretical past; mummy traders; leisured antiquarians; major European museums; Giovanni Belzoni, a circus strongman who removed more antiquities than Napoleon's armies; shrewd consuls and ruthless pashas; and archaeologists such Sir Flinders Petrie who changed the course of Egyptology. This is the first thoroughly revised edition of The Rape of the Nile - Fagan's classic account of the cavalcade of archaeologists, thieves, and sightseers who have flocked to the Nile Valley since ancient times. Featured in this edition are new accounts of stunning recent discoveries, including the Royal Tombs of Tanis, the Valley of Golden Mummies at Bahariya, the Tomb of the Sons of Ramses, and the sunken city of Alexandria (whose lighthouse was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World). Fagan concludes with a clear-eyed assessment of the impact of modern mass tourism on archaeological sites and artifacts. / Born in England and educated at Cambridge University, Brian Fagan is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is internationally known for his popular books on archaeology. He lives in Santa Barbara, California." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.

Among the ancient Gnostic texts discovered near that village on the Nile was the controversial Gospel of Thomas, a collection of 114 sayings attributed to Jesus. Of the thirteen volumes of documents uncovered at that time, the "Secret Sayings of Jesus," as this Gospel came to be called, stands closest in sense and spirit to the more widely accepted sources of early Christianity. In The Secret Sayings of Jesus, Robert Grant and David Noel Freedman offer a modern translation of the Gospel of Thomas, along with a judicious and revealing commentary on each saying. It is the authors' contention that through this work readers will gain insight into the many different ways the teachings of Jesus were understood by the generations immediately following his death. With its belief in an unknowable God who created the world of good and spirit, and a dermi~urge who created the world of evil and matter, Gnosticism was a vital, if finally vanquished, root of Christian thought. Many of its tenets were later condemned by the then fledgling Apostolic Church. In addition to the translation and commentary itself, The Secret Sayings of Jesus provides a wealth of background on Gospel texts in general. The authors explain the importance of the oral tradition of the ancient world, the survival of the Gospels deemed authentic, the difference between the teachings of the accepted Gospels and the Gnostic ones, and the magnitude of the find at Nag Hammadi. The authors also attempt to draw a portrait of the man known as Thomas, and his immediate world~a world of small, contending religious sects such as the Ophites and Naassenes, many of whose teachings were later declared heretical. By bringing the Gospel of Thomas into the light, and its long~silent voice into English, Grant and Freedman suggest the many alternative roads that religious history~in fact, all history~might have taken. They also supply a remarkable record of the meaning and depth of faith in the ancient Mediterranean world.

There are few people in the Western world who know nothing of the Great Pyramids of Giza and The treasures of Tutankhamon's tomb; but, for most, that is the full scope of their knowledge of Egyptian art. It is extraordinary how little general awareness there is of the fantastic wealth of this best~preserved art of all the ancient civilizations, so overshadowed has it been by the later and~for he West~more influential achievements of Greece and Rome. Professor Westendorf, the distinguished German Egyptologiist, here brings together an outstanding collection of illustrations ranging from prehistoric figurines of the fourth millennium B. C. to Christian ritual objects of Coptic times. However, the major emphasis is naturally on the Pharaonic period, those three thousand years during which the Egyptian's desire for immortality produced an art whose richness and variety are truly astonishing. Monumental architecture on a staggering and unprecedented scale; paintings that have been almost miraculously preserved in all their freshness by the dry Egyptian climate; sculpture in the round and carved and painted reliefs; tomb furnishings whose function was to provide the deceased with every necessity of the afterlife~all these are shown here in reproductions of the highest quality, accompanied by a lucid explanation of the role of each within the total context of Egyptian religious belief. Like the daily rising and setting of the sun and the annual flooding and drying up of the Nile, man's earthly existence was seen as only part of a continuous cycle that would be constantly renewed. Thus it is that, while the everyday mudbrick dwellings of the people have long since vanished, the stone~built temples and rock~cut tombs, literally constructed as dwellings for eternity, have survived as constant reminders not only of the grandeur of the ancient Egyptian Empire but also of the incomparable skill of her artists.

Bistavros George President of the Abou Sarga Church and other illustrations. Cover has some wear and soiling. The Copts are an ethnoreligious group indigenous to North Africa who primarily inhabit the area of modern Egypt. Most ethnic Copts are Coptic Orthodox Christians. Coptic Orthodox Christians are the largest Christian denomination in the country and in the Middle East. Coptic Orthodox Christians are also the largest Christian denomination in Sudan and Libya. Historically, ethnic Copts spoke the Coptic language, a direct descendant of the Demotic Egyptian that was spoken in late antiquity. Originally referring to all Egyptians at first, the term 'Copt' became synonymous with being a Christian, as a result of Egypt's Arabization and Islamization. Copts in Egypt constitute the largest Christian population in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as the largest religious minority in the region, accounting for roughly 5-20% of the Egyptian population, although the exact percentage is unknown. Copts in Sudan constitute the largest Christian community in Sudan, and Copts in Libya constitute the largest Christian community in Libya, accounting for an estimated 1% of their respective populations. After the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 639 and 646 AD, the treatment of the Coptic Christians ranged from relative tolerance to open persecution. Most Copts adhere to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, an Oriental Orthodox Church. Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church (The Church of Martyrs Sergius and Bacchus in The Cave), also known as Abu Serga, in Coptic Cairo is one of the oldest Coptic churches in Egypt, dating back to the 4th century. Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church is traditionally believed to have been built on the spot where the Holy Family, Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus Christ, rested at the end of their journey into Egypt. They may have lived here while Joseph worked at the fortress. The church is of significant historical importance, and in fact, it is where many patriarchs of the Coptic Church were elected. The first to be elected here was Patriarch Isaac (681-692) It is the episcopal church of Cairo, and it was the episcopal See of Masr (the district of Old Cairo) that replaced the former See of Babylon. Many bishops of the See were consecrated in the Church until the reign of Patriarch Christodulus (1047-1077). The church is dedicated to Sergius and Bacchus, who were soldier-saints martyred during the 4th century in Syria by the Roman Emperor Maximian. The most interesting feature is the crypt where Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus are said to have rested. The crypt is 10 meters deep and, when Nile levels are high, is often flooded. The Church was built in the 4th century and was probably finished during the 5th century. It was burned during the fire of Fustat during the reign of Marwan II around 750. It was then restored during the 8th century, and has been rebuilt and restored constantly since medieval times; however, it is still considered to be a model of the early Coptic churches. The most precious and ancient of the icons are on the southern wall. A vast central hall is divided into three naves by two rows of pilasters. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

Born into a working-class Coptic family in the provincial town of Tanta, in Egypt's lush Nile Delta, Yusuf Tadrus is fascinated from a young age by light and shadow, spending his time drawing, making toys out of discarded objects he finds in the alley, and dreaming of becoming an artist and stepping into a broader world. As he grows into adulthood, he hones his talent, but his ambitions are checked: by the responsibilities of family, marriage, and work; by his own lack of self-confidence, his ambivalence, and at times his recklessness; and by society's expectations and prejudices. Adel Esmat provides an intimate glimpse into Egyptian Christian life and, with sensitivity and honesty, tells of the struggles faced by an artist who seeks to remain true to his calling. Tales of Yusuf Tadrus is set in the Egyptian Delta town of Tanta, and tells the story of a young Coptic artist from a humble background. Through haunting landscapes of the Nile Valley, oases and deserts, purely designed buildings, sumptuous paintings, beautiful illuminations, and exquisite fabrics, Christian Egypt transports the reader through the two-thousand year history and culture of Coptic Egypt. In Christian Egypt, Massimo Capuani invites students, scholars, and other interested readers to gain a greater appreciation of the richness of the Coptic civilization by traveling through ancient and medieval Coptic sites throughout Egypt, including the ruined monasteries of Saint Jeremiah (Saqqara) and Saint Apollo (Bawit). Capuani's comprehensive examination of the archeological studies and historical literature of Coptic Christian monasteries and churches are supported by over 170 black-and-white photographs, maps, and architectural illustrations. In addition, 105 full-color photographs provide a substantive record of monuments, architectural features, and wall paintings not seen elsewhere with such clarity and beauty. A chronology of Egypt from 332 B.C. to 1952 and an essay on the typology and architectural evolution of Egyptian churches add to the value of the work. Christian Egypt is enriched by the contribution of Otto F. A. Meinardus, who introduces readers to Coptic Egypt with a discussion of basic issues such as the patriarchs of Alexandria and theology of the World Church during the fourth and fifth centuries, the history of the Coptic Church, monasticism, the attitude of Egypt's rulers toward the Copts, and the Coptic renaissance during the pontificates of the patriarchs Cyril VI and Shenouda III. In a valuable, concise account, Marie-Helène Rutschowscaya elucidates several aspects of Coptic art: wall paintings, icons, illustrated manuscripts, as well as textiles. She offers readers a comprehensive picture of the artistic achievements of the Copts. Gawdat Gabra's thorough knowledge of current archeological activity and the most recent consensus regarding the dates and other questions concerning churches and monasteries enhance the store of information in Christian Egypt. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the fourth century, the deserts of Egypt became the nerve center of a radical new movement, what we now call monasticism. Groups of Christians-from illiterate peasants to learned intellectuals-moved out to the wastelands beyond the Nile Valley and, in the famous words of Saint Athanasius, made the desert a city. In so doing, they captured the imagination of the ancient world. They forged techniques of prayer and asceticism, of discipleship and spiritualdirection, that have remained central to Christianity ever since. Seeking to map the soul's long journey to God and plot out the subtle vagaries of the human heart, they created and inspired texts thatbecame classics of Western spirituality. These Desert Christians were also brilliant storytellers, some of Christianity's finest. This book introduces the literature of early monasticism. It examines all the best-known works, including Athanasius' Life of Antony, the Lives of Pachomius, and the so-called Sayings of the Desert Fathers. Later chapters focus on two pioneers of monastic theology: Evagrius Ponticus, the first great theoretician of Christian mysticism;and John Cassian, who brought Egyptian monasticism to the Latin West. Along the way, readers are introduced to path-breaking discoveries-to new texts and recent archeological finds-that have revolutionized contemporaryscholarship on monastic origins. Included are fascinating snippets from papyri and from little-known Coptic, Syriac, and Ethiopic texts. Interspersed in each chapter are illustrations, maps, and diagrams that help readers sort through the key texts and the richly-textured world of early monasticism. Geared to a wide audience and written in clear, jargon-free prose, Desert Christians offers the most comprehensive and accessible introduction to early monasticism. Provides an accessible introduction to early Christian monastic literature from Egypt and beyond. This book serves as a text for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses on early Christianity, the Desert Fathers, and Christian asceticism. It includes chronologies, maps, outlines, illustrations, and bibliographies. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The author explores Egypt's cities, deserts, societies, monasteries, and circumstances in a time of widespread unrest (1990-95), which helped set the scene for the Arab Spring two decades on. The 57 short essays that comprise this book were written during 1990 to 1995 while the author, Dr Lilllian Craig Harris, a former American Foreign Service officer married to British diplomat Alan Goulty, lived in Cairo. The essays explore Egypt's cities, deserts, societies, monasteries, and circumstances in a time of widespread unrest, which helped set the scene for the Arab Spring two decades on. Included are essays about life in Cairo, diplomatic difficulties, religious tensions, the problems of the poor (including a growing resort to suicide), unrest under the Mubarak regime, travels in the Egyptian deserts, Upper Egypt, the Sinai, and the far west of the country--and more. The following is a sample of topics discussed: Malfunction of government, deepening corruption, and growing anger over dictatorship; religious tensions between Muslims and Coptic Christians; antigovernment violence, usually well shielded from foreign eyes; marginalization of the poor; the growing anger of impoverished and marginalized Egyptians; the importance of the desert tribes; national dependence on the Nile and the great river's encounters with tourism; the importance of faith, Islam as well as Christianity, in helping people cope; expansion of the Coptic monasteries while many secular Copts left the country; unsustainable use of the fragile desert environment; the resilience, hope, faith, and hospitality of the Egyptian people; a high rate of suicide, as revealed by Befrienders Cairo, a suicide prevention charity the author set up; the love/hate relationship between Egyptians and their former colonial master, the British--and more.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The natural citadel of Qasr Ibrim in Northern Nubia occupied for thousands of years a strategic position between Egypt and the Middle Nile region, the present-day Sudan. The rich archaeological and textual finds from the site document its history from the rule of the 'Black Pharaohs' of Egypt's 25th dynasty onwards until the Ottoman period. Briefly occupied by the Romans under Augustus, Qasr Ibrim flourished as a stronghold of Meroitic culture in the first centuries AD. In Late Antiquity, it was the political centre of a tiny kingdom, Nobadia, bordering on the Byzantine empire. Following the Christianization of the region in the fifth and sixth centuries, it became the see of a bishop, for whom a magnificent stone-built cathedral was erected. During the Arab conquest of Egypt, Nubia secured its independence under the kings of Makouria, who had their capital further south, in Old Dongola. Qasr Ibrim became the residence of the eparch of Noubadia, an official who played a pivotal role in the contacts between Christian Nubia and Islamic Egypt. The capture of the citadel by Shams ad-Dawla, Saladin's brother, in 1173, was a dramatic event that inaugurated the decline of the Christian kingdoms of Nubia in the later Middle Ages. This volume contains thirteen papers that focus on Qasr Ibrim as a key witness to cultural interaction between Egypt and the world of the Mediterranean on the one hand, and Africa, the Sudan and beyond on the other. Drawing their inspiration from the rich material found on site, these papers combine text-based and archaeological approaches. Particular attention is paid, for instance, to pottery and textile finds, while texts written in Demotic, Meroitic, Greek, Coptic, Old Nubian and Arabic are presented and discussed. Beyond the mere presentation of material, the volume addresses more general questions concerning cultural liminality, the role of indigenous versus foreign models and centre-periphery relations. Above all, however, it chronicles a fascinating chapter in the history of North-South contacts. Hardcover. Presumed first edition/first printing. xv, [1], 146 p. PReface by A> H. Sayce. Introduction by A. J. Butler {from Wikipedia: "The Rev. Archibald Henry Sayce (25 September 1846-4 February 1933), was a pioneer British Assyriologist and linguist, who held a chair as Professor of Assyriology at the University of Oxford from 1891 to 1919." Excerpt from The Coptic Encyclopedia: "MIKHAIL, KYRIAKOS (1877-1957), Egyptian journalist and politican. He was educated at the American College of Asyut and the Coptic College in Cairo (Madrasat al-Aqbat al-Kubra). He became a full-time journalist and moved to Alexandria in 1908. Here he wrote to the London press a vehement criticism of the High Commissioner Sir Aldon Gorst's Annual Report of 1911, in which Gorst attacked the Coptic Congress for its show of "Coptic grievances" in that year. In 1911, Mikhail was delegated by the Coptic Congress and the Coptic Society to go to London, where with the assistance of Louis Fanus, a Coptic political personality, he established an Egyptian Information Bureau. This was the beginning of a new phase in his career as he published articles supportive of the Coptic cause in the English press. During 1911 Mikhail wrote Copts and Moslems Under the British Control. In 1912 he decided to start his own newspaper in Egypt, but his request was rejected by the Egyptian government. Consequently, he published Freedom of the Press in Egypt (1914), in which he attacked restrictive laws on the press as well as discrimination against Coptic organs. During World War I, he was not allowed to leave Britain and so made a living by writing and lecturing on Egyptian politics, society, and history at Birmingham and Oxford universities, as well as at the Egyptian Christian Club in London. During that period, Egyptians in Britain were threatened with arrest as Ottoman subjects, but a debate in the House of Lords led by Lord Cromer contested any such action, thus enabling Mikhail to retain his freedom. To make both ends meet, he wrote articles and opened the Redline Bookstore, which proved to be a principal supplier of literature on the Middle East. This was a successful financial venture, but was closed in November 1919 at the time of his deportation from Britain. On 9 December 1919 he was arrested and incarcerated, pending his final deportation from Britain. On his arrival in Egypt in late December 1919, though he had been instructed by the authorities to refrain from discussing politics, he was received by the public as a national hero in Alexandria and Cairo. In January 1920 Mikhail was elected a member of the central committee of the Wafd Party. With the normalization of relations with Britain and Egypt's declaration of independence in 1922 Mikhail returned to London, where his residence became a focal point for the Wafd politicians and many governmental missions visiting England. In 1950 he was recruited for participation in the Wafd negotiations with Ethiopia concerning the regulation of the Nile waters, on account of his personal friendship with Emperor HAILE SELASSIE, which had grown during the imperial exile to London in 1936. After Mikhail died in London, his body was taken back to Egypt and buried in his native village." Good. No dust jacket. Signed by previous owner. Cover has some wear and soiling. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Coptic Church owes it existence to the evangelization of Egypt by St Mark and thus claims to be one of the churches most faithful to the biblical message of the beginnings of Christianity. This book is the result of a comprehensive examination of the archaeological studies and historical literature of Coptic Christian monasteries and churches, supported by photographs and architectural drawings, as well as many colour plates. In it, Gawdat Gabra shares his knowledge of contemporary archaeological activity and the most recent consensus regarding the dates and other questions concerning churches and monasteries. The contributions of Otto Meinardus and Marie-Helene Rutschowscaya offer comprehensive surveys of the 2000-year history of the Coptic Church and of the artistic expression of the Coptic world. Together they aim to bring to life the history of this culture, which has enjoyed a renewal, through the most beautiful artistic landscapes of the Nile Valley, of oases and deserts, the purity of the buildings in the sunlight, the sumptuousness of the paintings, the illuminations and the fabrics. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Provides an introduction to early Christian monastic literature from Egypt and beyond. This book serves as a text for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses on early Christianity, the Desert Fathers, and Christian asceticism. It includes chronologies, maps, outlines, illustrations, and bibliographies. Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.

Condition: Good+. On offer are two super, original, handwritten notebooks by what appears to be an unidentified British Army Officer who states that he has lived in the Near East for 4 years and was on leave in 1919.One gets the impression the officer intended write a book and lecture on the subjects contained: Book 1 deals with Egyptian occult practices and amulets in great detail. The author of this manuscript affects a very skeptical tone, overtly Christian, and may be writing as a counterpoint to Sir Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge who wrote extensively on Egyptian occult amulets and who translated the Egyptian Book Of The Dead which helped increase the public appetite for the subject. Skeptical he may be but clearly he is fascinated by the occult beliefs of the mass of the people he has met in his travels. The text covers: evil spirits - ginns, amulets - ornamental, charms - paper, tin, lead, wood, magic powders, plants, curses, the healing cup, the black magic trembling cup, good and bad angels, six pages on the evil eye and cures, rabies, beads, etc., etc. The second book is the text to accompany a slide show: "Up the Nile to Assouan and a glimpse of Abu Simbel". 100 pages with an index, no slides, but very erudite. This is not tourist stuff but scientific discourse. The books are in very good condition and measure 9" x 7" and 44 and 100 pages respectively. Handwriting is very clear. Overall G+. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Manuscript.

  • Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Folio album (ca. 33,5x35 cm or 13 ¼ x 14 in). 35 card stock leaves. With over 160 mounted original gelatin silver photos, including seven large images from ca. 18x23,5 cm (7 x 9 ¼ in) to ca. 12x17 cm (4 ¾ x 6 ¾ in); the rest of the photos are from ca. 8,5x12 cm (3 ½ x 4 ¾ in) to ca. 8,5x10 cm (3 ¼ x 4 in); four small images are ca. 6x8,5 cm (2 ¼ x 3 ¼ in). With ca. eighteen mounted real photo postcards, all ca. 8,5x13,5 cm (3 ¼ x 5 ¼ in). All but six leaves with period manuscript ink captions in Czech, mostly related to groups of images (sometimes to individual images). Period brown soft cardboard album, fastened with a string. Covers with creases, minor wear to extremities, one image apparently previously removed, otherwise a very good album of strong interesting photos. Interesting, extensive collection of original photos and real photo postcards, adding to the history of connections between Egypt and the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938) and tourism to Egypt by Czechs in the interwar period. The album illustrates a trip to Egypt on March 12 ? April 23, 1930, done by a middle-aged couple, with the captions to the photos in Czech. Due to the similarity of the images of the album compiler to the portraits available online, the male traveller is possibly Franti?ek Lexa (1876-1960) the first director of the Czechoslovak Institute of Egyptology and a teacher of Jaroslav ?erný. The first leaf of the album contains three group portraits, taken at the entrance to the Czechoslovak Legation in Cairo and featuring the couple, Czechoslovak ambassador in Egypt Vladimir Hurban (1883-1949, in office: 1924 ? September 1930), a noted Czech Egyptologist Jaroslav ?erný (1898-1970), and others. Over twenty images depict leisure excursions to the Egyptian archaeological and natural sites, including Hurban and ?erný, among others. The album also includes several photos of the couple posing with the captain and officers of an Italian passenger steamer "Helouan." The photos include views of Luxor (Sun Court, the Great Colonnade, statue of Ramesses II, feluccas on the Nile, water wheels, peasants' homes), Karnak (general view, Avenue of Sphinxes, gate to the Temple of Khonsu, statues of pharaohs and a scarab), Medinet Habu (Temple of Ramesses III), Colossi of Memnon, Deir el-Medina, the Ramesseum, Theban Necropolis (mortuary temples of Hatshepsut, Abd el-Qurna), Edfu (Edfu temple ? the pylon, courtyard, bas-reliefs, Nile banks and local people), the Pyramid of Djoser, Fayum Oasis, the Great Pyramids of Giza, &c. Over twenty images document a trip to the Philae Island via Aswan and Shellal (heavily flooded Philae Temple, Aswan Low Dam, local houses and ruins, boats on the Nile). Views of Cairo show the Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque, City of the Dead, Mosque of Ibn Tulun, &c. The couple presents on many photos of ancient Egyptian temples and sites, resting on the grounds of the historic Winter Palace Hotel in Luxor (opened in 1907), in front of the entrance to a Christian (most likely, Coptic) church, &c. Four photos and five real photo postcards at the rear show Venice. Overall, an interesting collection of original gelatin silver photos and postcards, taken and collected by Czechoslovaks in Egypt in 1930.

4to (235 x 185 mm). 177 pp. Contemporary wrappers (wanting spine). Handwritten title and name on front cover. An early 19th century Egyptologist's fascinating travel notes documenting his journey through the Nile valley, profusely illustrated with more than 230 sketches showing hieroglyphs and Greek and Coptic inscriptions. - At the age of 27, Louis de Vaucelles undertook an expedition to Egypt to explore the banks of the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. He set out from Marseille on 27 January 1826 and reached the second cataract on 27 May. In his journal he accurately reproduces all cartouches and inscriptions of the temples, tombs and palaces visited up to the first cataract south of Aswan. He gives the condition of monuments (sometimes mere ruins), identifies traces of Christian chapels and churches, translates hieroglyphs dedicated both to pharaohs and Roman emperors, indicates (in cursive script) several Arabic words and names, and mentions the orientalists who preceded him: his mentor Champollion as well as Denon, Maillé, Belzoni, and Niebuhr. Among the temples and sites he describes are Ipsamboul, Edfu, Dakka ("un des mieux conservés"), Thèbes ("Louqsor"), Karnak, Denderah Assouan, Elephantine and Philae as well as the pyramids of Giza, Cleopatra's Needle, the Sphinx (the head of which is said to be "extrêmement mutilée"), Alexandria, and the Nile Delta. - The final fifty-odd pages are devoted to contemporary Egyptian cities, their people, and their Arab, Jewish and Coptic traditions. As Vaucelle notes, Coptic Christians are free to practice their religion due to the unrivalled tolerance of the Muslim faith ("tant il est vrai qu il n y a pas de religion plus tolérante que la religion mahométane"). He also provides details of medical operations such as castration, circumcision, and excision, as well as of the "Kalisch" festivities held in Cairo at the time of the opening of the dikes. - Louis de Vaucelles de Ravigny was trained by Jean-François Champollion, who in 1824 published his "Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens". Apart from the present travel journal he also produced a "Chronologie des monuments antiques de la Nubie" (1829), based on the interpretation of the royal legends contained in the hieroglyphic reliefs, a book in which he pays tribute to the German egyptologist François-Christian Gau. - Slight fraying to edges; wants wrappers' spine. A fine survival.
