But what no-one has actually told you is what exactly a promise ring is! I bet you can take a wild guess but we're sure you still have a ton of questions...

The History of Promise Rings
With increasing talk about promise rings recently it's easy to assume that promise rings are a new idea, however this is not the case! Research suggests that the use of promise rings dates all the way back to ancient times, where they were used literally for what they are named for – to seal a promise.In biblical times, couples were betrothed for many years before marriage, using a promise ring to signify this. Bishops would also wear promise rings as a symbol of their spiritual marriage to the church.

What is a Promise Ring?
Fast-forward to now, and a promise ring is given to a loved one for a whole bunch of different reasons, but mainly as a sign of commitment, dedication and love. There are no real 'rules' when it comes down to giving a promise ring to someone, because the most important thing is the promise behind it, whatever that may be!Can a Promise Ring Replace an Engagement Ring?
It definitely can if you want it to! As we said, there are no real rules to giving a promise ring because what it symbolises to the relationship is all that matters. For example, if a couple decides that they don't want to get married then a promise ring is absolutely the perfect thing - it acts as a symbol of love and commitment.If a couple want to get married in the future but they can't because of their circumstances, for example if they live away from each other of if they're saving for a house, then a promise ring would be ideal. The ring could act as the promise to marry in the future when the circumstances have changed.
Who do you give a Promise Ring to?
It's common for us to give promise rings to our romantic partners, boyfriends and girlfriends, but that's not the only reason to give a promise ring. You could also give a promise ring to:- A parent - to say thank you to them, and to promise to look after them too
- A child - to promise you'll look after them forever
- A friend - as a promise to always support them and be good friends to them, even if busy lives get in the way
How to Wear a Promise Ring
What's great about a promise ring is that there's so much flexibility on where and how you wear one. You can wear a promise ring on any finger on either hand, so if you want to wear it on the right ring finger instead of the left, then that's completely fine! Promise rings don't always have to be worn daily either, the wearer may prefer to wear their ring on special occasions or on a birthday or anniversary.
