Hello anonymous! Indeed, this hearing protection does require 2 AA size batteries to power the digital AM/FM receiver. I have been using these for years and a single set pair of batteries will a good while (several days with intermittent use).

The headset requires 2 AA batteries, not provided. Be aware, these only power the radio. If you connect an mp3 player or ipod, the headset works like a set of headphones without it's own power to amplify.

Yes it is MP3 compatible and a standard male/male DIN extension is included. However the signal is not amplified so relies on the MP3's volume control. The signal is also limited to 87 dB max which may not be loud enough in a noisy environment (mowing the lawn etc).
Sound quality is good but you are right in that the headset acts as a big set of ear buds.

This headset has a female mini-plug jack. You do need an MP3 player or iPod.
It has been a while since I got mine but I think it comes with a double ended m/m cord. Plug one end into your iPod and the other into the headset.
It does not amplify your mp3 player. But the point of the headset is to suppress the noise of your lawn mower or power equipment so you can hear your music.

Yes, you still need an MP3 player. A cable is provided to connect it to the MP3 player. Basically it just takes the place of your headphones or ear buds.

I use the rechargeable type, but plain alkaline batteries will last a month with daily use.
