Deadly Class Vol. 1: Reagan Youth Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 832 ratings

It's 1987. Marcus Lopez hates school. His grades suck. The jocks are hassling his friends. He can't focus in class. But the jocks are the children of Joseph Stalin's top assassin, the teachers are members of an ancient league of assassins, the class he's failing is "Dismemberment 101," and his crush has a doubledigit body count. Welcome to the most brutal high school on earth, where the world's top crime families send the next generation of assassins to be trained. Murder is an art. Killing is a craft. At Kings Dominion School for the Deadly Arts, the dagger in your back isn't always metaphorical.

I'm still fairly new to the comic book world having only read marque titles such as The Watchmen, Y: The Last Man, Old Man Logan, Fables, and others. Interesting characters, a cool story, good pacing - these are characteristics that Deadly Class possesses, but what stands out to me is the style as a whole. The art is fantastic, the characters have well-defined and interesting personalities, the way the panels progress and actually influence the mood of a story beat on each page is flat out awesome.

I should admit that the story of a school of assassins isn't the most original, but it's mostly a backdrop as Remender focuses on these teenagers finding their way in the social hierarchy of high school, coping with their past, naively planning ideas for the future, and (of course) love triangles.

Deadly Class drips with style, is violent without being ridiculous, and is outstanding in every aspect a comic can be. I can't wait to read more.

One of my favorite most consistent series of all time. Never disappointed. I recommend reading all the way to the end, as the author totally sticks the landing. The art is amazing and fluid and cinematic.

Having been a skater and a punk in the late 1980s, this comic really brought me back. Although some of the characters start as stereotypes (and isn't that what high schools are full of as a person starts to form his identity), they take on a realism that is refreshing. It is a very violent comic, usually too violent for my tastes. But it is a violence that is trying to go above violence for violence sake (I think, I hope). The bigger theme of the comic is how our environment influences us, especially during those critical adolescent years.

The art and colors are first rate. Unique and original, yet they feel familiar.

Lots of allusions to 80s pop culture is an added bonus to an engaging story. Looking forward to starting volume 2.

This is a good book, although I finished it feeling a little flat, the characters didn't have any great back story to them. A panel or two each telling about what gangs or families they came from, but not a whole lot about each one. Maybe they're planning to do a back story in each book, as in this one you get the truth about what happened with the gangbanger and how he got to the school. I don't think I will be buying any more of the books solely because I am already to far into other series, but I may come back to this once they wrap up the arcs I'm reading now.

Wow! What a story, concept, and rendering of down and out, wholly messed up early-adult experience. My high school years were not always easy, and I remember that vibe, the cliques, the frustration, the longing for the girl, the violence just under the surface if you didn't quite fit in. Thankfully my experience never came close to the crazy, trippy world conjured by Rick Remender and team, but for a rendering of an unreal world, this felt about as real as it could be. For anyone who came of age in the eighties (graduated in 1985 myself), particularly if you were a fan of the Smiths, had a group of offbeat friends, and you had a driving need to do something (albeit not as extreme as killing the president), you MUST read this book! If you love a fascinating story, characters who feel thoroughly believable although warped by their circumstances and, more disturbingly, by their families or interests, then you too MUST read this book! I can't wait to see how the rest of the series unfolds!

I have been reading along with each floppy review on the recommendation of my LCS owner and have been foaming at the mouth for more each time. The artwork is perfect for the story and pulls you into the '80s without feeling overly nostalgic or trapped in a specific moment or timeline. The story feels like it pulls elements from all over the era/genre and mashes them all together in a way that feels much more like a love letter than plagiarism. I constantly feel like I recognize an image or character from another piece of media only to realize that they are different enough to make me like them even more.

I love this book and what Rick Remender is doing with it. Please buy a copy for you and all your friends, you won't regret it.

BEST COMIC I HAVE READ ALL YEAR!! The story starts buy introducing the character and unfolds into this epic storyline that has the potential to go anywhere and in this first set of comics they do just that. The story to me is best described as a cross between Fear and loathing in las vegas. Kill Bill, fight club and the best gangster film you can think of. I was not bored once while reading it and I totally bought the whole story line. Excellent Job on this COMIC!!!!! I recommend this to any comic lover. Please keep this epic story coming authors. Cant wait to preorder the next volume

Just a good ass book. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise. I reviewed this book for comixology a while back. It's like Hogwarts, but for killers. It's a high school drama where the stakes are crazy high. If the bullies don't like the awkward main character's friends, they'll just kill them. That's totally allowed! It's exciting. Read it if you can.
