About
Located on Mobile Point, at the end of Scenic Fort Morgan Peninsula, the site has a diverse number of activities to make your vacation a memorable one. Preceded by another fort, Fort Bowyer during the War of 1812, Fort Morgan is a Third System masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. Standing guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico, the fort played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864. Used intermittently through the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II, the site showcases the evolution of seacoast fortifications and adaptations made by the U.S. Army for the defense of the country.

- Lillian's W36 contributionsGreat HistoryFound the site very interesting. They provide you with a pamphlet with some good background. Additional signage explains points of interest. Site is well maintained. You will have to walk a lot of steps to see the entire fort, but worth it. Museum also has some great information an historical items. Don’t miss it.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 26, 2023
- sjc198052 contributionsGreat and surprising!I was worried that our teens may not enjoy this activity, but they were solidly engaged the whole visit, despite the oppressive heat. The presentation on the history is not to be missed. It’s a beautiful and unique site. We went early, right after they opened and stayed about 3 hours. You could spend all day there, but the heat got to us. I recommend bug spray. The osprey nest was a bonus!Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 22, 2023
- Tracy RBlanchard, Oklahoma103 contributionsGo when it's cool & bring flashlights! This is a nice site, with a good balance between having plenty to see and enough information to go with it without being too much. It also has neat architectural elements if you appreciate that. I’d recommend visiting it more in the cool weather than the warm because there are a lot of stairs and it’s mostly open-sun so it’s very, very hot. Even in September it was still 90 degrees but felt much hotter, so we went through faster than we would have otherwise. Tip: bring little flashlights for the kids so they don’t nab your phone and leave you unable to take pictures. There are multiple unlit passages to explore, and they’re completely dark- you need a light.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 18, 2023
- HendersonedFlorence, Oregon934 contributionsAmazing piece of historyAmazing history site, used in 4 wars and the brick work is astounding. Sad set of the Native American roundup, shipped our brothers to the west for the rez. Much to learn, good and bad. I highly recommend.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 24, 2023
- LiketoeatCincinnatiCincinnati, Ohio2,534 contributionsWorth the DriveThis is our second visit whereby the last time was 15 years ago. It is about a half hour from Gulf Shores but worth the drive. There is a lot to explore in a typical fort on the water. There are a few steep stairs but you can access the upper level with more manageable stairs.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 19, 2023
- Amy WBoulder, Colorado11 contributionsThis location is stunning!Stunning location. The museum is small yet very informative and the exhibits are well-rounded. Nice to wander around and feel the wind, smell the gulf, and explore the historic site. There are some interpretive signs/area, but I would have enjoyed if there were more.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 14, 2024
- GinaSiesta Key, Florida2 contributionsPretty cool stop, not for everyone? It was a very unique and interesting stop. We enjoyed the adventure. (I can’t believe the state allows people to visit without guidance, The liability is great. There are very few cautions about this visit. Children, elderly and handicapped eith couldn’t make the tour or would need extra help. It could be dangerous. Tall steep steps that are at least a foot or more high, broken and bumpy raised areas of floor to walk on, many areas that a person could fall off of. I didn’t see much info stating these things. It was fine for us and we are active and 65 years old) There is a bathroom there and a small museum. The views from the top area are wonderful. It’s an interesting drive there seeing the residential areas. There are some restaurants and nature hike at the wildlife preserve on the way there.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 17, 2024
- hope4jacksonChurubusco, Indiana24 contributionsMake time for the Fort! This is a must see if you are in the Gulf Shores area! Incredibly well preserved, enormous site with historic significance. We self-toured the grounds and spent a couple hours. We could have spent more time! The views of Mobile Bay are incredible. The historians are knowledgeable and available in the fort area. The size is overwhelming; it was truly humbling to walk where heroes once served and defended our country! The bathrooms were clean and the small museum had a few snacks. Again, absolutely worth the trip from Gulf Shores or Dauphin Island.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 3, 2024

If you enjoy history, then by all means, this place is for you! The fort is very well preserved and there’s a lot of information throughout! There’s a tiny museum and a few different locations to drive to on the property, it also has beautiful views everywhere you look. However, it is NOT worth $8 a person, I am not sure what we are paying for because everything is a self guided tour, they’re still recovering from hurricane damage as the signs say, and you’ll only spend an hour or 2 there. It’s a long drive to the location as well, and if I would have looked ahead of time and known we would had to pay to get in, we would have skipped it. It was a neat experience, but one we won’t be doing again.

This is a neat place and definitely worth the stop. We went with friends on a nice day and enjoyed walking the grounds. The price is reasonable and it is really a large place. They had a little demonstration going while we were there and people seemed to really enjoy it. It is a one time thing...so we likely won't be back, but would recommend to others.

Fort Morgan is a gem of a fort! The site is very well kept up and the majority of the interior of the fort is accessible. I could have spent a few hours exploring all the passageways and climbing around on the top level. There is a small museum covering the history but the majority of the time should be spent outside. Great views as well!

The Fort was much larger than I imagined, and was used as defense for several conflicts. Even though the Visitor Center was closed due to Covid-19, we throughly enjoyed our visit. There is signage throughout to help you understand the contruction and the historical context. Lots of stairs, some quite steep, but worth the climbs. Check out the State Historic web site before you go. Veterans and military get free entrance.

We decided to take a break from the beach and pool for the day and head over to explore the Fort. We have two kids (8 and 15) who love history so it was fun to walk around the museum and learn about the fort and then go walk around the actual fort. Our son loved seeing the cannons and our daughter was looking for ghosts (don't worry, she didn't see any!) The steps up to the upper level are pretty steep so be aware if you have knee issues. On a side note, if you have Hamilton loving kids, there is a plaque marking the Fort as a stop on Lafayette's Tour! While the Fort is fun, it doesn't take too long to explore and the upper level isn't accessible to wheelchairs or strollers so it would be less to explore in those situations. Also, I would recommend going early in the day before it gets super hot. It was still cool and a nice break from the beach!

To start off take your bug spray.
Military veterans get in free.
Great to visit a site and see the Fort and how long it has stood the test of time. It was a great visit. I wish they would have had at least one of the guns still mounted on the inside of the fort. It has pictures of the guns from the inside but as most old forts the have been removed. Take some walking shoes and spend some time walking the whole thing and reading the material they provide you at the gate. It will take a good hour to walk the fort and see it all so plan a little time out of your day to walk around in the bottom and then on the outside of it.

Was met by very nice admissions lady to start with. It was a great self driven tour. The little kids were entertained and the adults learned some history. We did get “lost” but escaped through a window. One thing is to try and visit on a cooler day. Hands off to the lady selling souvenirs, she was isolated by the closed museum. Very friendly!
Worth the visit.

We went to Fort Morgan after taking the Bay Ferry over and back. Upon approaching it a lady in a "guard" house came out to tell us admission would cost $8 per adult. There were 6 of us. The 1 veteran got in for free. No other discounts.
We think they should have a sign posting their rates. We paid cash, got a receipt and a map/info booklet.
We started by visiting the small museum near the main visitor parking lot. We entered the fort through its Postern Tunnel. The historic fort is huge and interesting but more than a little rough around its edges as similar age forts are concerned, such as Sumter and Pulaski on the Altlantic side. It appears the state of Alabama's Historical Commission that administers this 1800's vintage primarily brick fort is lacking the funds to complete some much needed restoration. Such a shame IOO. Some of its brick works are truly pieces of art constructed in its day. I feel we often tend to take so much for granted when viewing such amazing American history. 30 million bricks assembled centuries ago on a point of sand next to the Bay. Amazing place.

We really enjoyed exploring the fort! At $20 for our family it was one of the cheapest things we did. The museum is small but with children, that wasn’t a bad thing for us. They liked searching the tunnels/rooms. We went first thing in the morning when crowds and heat were lower.

The entire site is well presented. For a family of 4 (2 & 2) the cost of admission was very reasonable, $20. The museum isn’t large and doesn’t take long to navigate. The views from the top of the fort themselves are very nice.
The beach access is very nice. We saw several pods of dolphins while talking a nice long walk and saw a lot of shells on our way as well.
Public restrooms could be better.

About 2 hours, but is one of those self-guided tours that can last as long as you want it. I think we explored every nook and cranny and was there over 4 hours.

Are the beaches and water clean in this area?
Zeke T
Winston Salem, NC1,692 contributions
I would consider them clean. The beaches in the area are not like those near the boardwalk areas that are raked & smoothed by machine. These areas are cleaned & smoothed by the tide waters so they are more natural. As for the water, it is the saltwater of the gulf. I would not hesitate to swim there but you will have to decide that on you own.

What is the water and beaches like here in May?
Zeke T
Winston Salem, NC1,692 contributions
We were there at the end of June but the beaches had plenty of visitors & lots of people were enjoying the water. Since your on the gulf coast there is not a lot of difference between May & June. May is about 7 degrees on average lower than June with the average high at 82 degrees & a low of 74 degrees for May.
