Melania Trump made a pained, seemingly half-hearted attempt to smile during a photo shoot with her husband.

Standing beside Donald Trump and on his instruction, the model turned First Lady of the United States showed a flicker of a smile.

Melania looked visibly uncomfortable at her husband's request, which was made while they visited the Saint John Paul II shrine at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC Tuesday.

By contrast, Trump appeared in good spirits, flashing a large, toothy grin.

The half-smile was the first public sign of dissatisfaction that Melania has shown in around two years.

The First Lady caused a minor stir during the 45th President's innaguration.

Melania had a beaming smile on her face as she talked with her husband during the ceremony, but as soon as his back was turned, her expression immediately fell.

A month later the now 50-year-old was accompanying her husband at a campaign rally at the Orlando-Melbourne International airport in Florida.

As she was talking to the crowds, her husband came up behind her and touched her on the arm.

Looking to the side, Melania appeared to shudder as she felt the President's hand on her skin.

In the months that followed Melania was seen batting away her husband's hand several times.

It was during that time that Trump was accused of having two extra-marital flings.

The pair settle into glum expressions

The Trumps' trip to the shrine today was carried out under somewhat of a cloud.

Prior to them arriving the Archbishop of Washington, Wilton D Gregory, condemned the President for ordering the clearance of peaceful protesters with rubber bullets so he could carry out a photo op last night.

Archbishop Gregory said in a statement: "I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people even those with whom we might disagree.

"Saint Pope John Paul II was an ardent defender of the rights and dignity of human beings.

"His legacy bears vivid witness to that truth. He certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them for a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace."

This evening the President said US troops should take to the streets of New York City to quell unrest, sparked by the killing of unarmed black man George Floyd.

"NYC, CALL UP THE NATIONAL GUARD. The lowlifes and losers are ripping you apart. Act fast!" Trump tweeted.

He is deploying thousands of armed soldiers and law enforcement in the US capital and vowed to do the same wherever authorities fail to regain control.

Lawmakers and law enforcement officials seemed taken aback by the extent of mayhem overnight in some major U.S. cities where police were shot at and pelted with rocks and projectiles as they faced hostile crowds.

Demonstrators smashed windows and looted stores in New York, including luxury retailers on Fifth Avenue, and set fire to a Los Angeles strip mall.

Four officers were shot in St. Louis and one in Las Vegas who was critically wounded, authorities said.
