About the author

Rainbow Rowell writes all kinds of stuff.
Sometimes she writes about adults (ATTACHMENTS, LANDLINE, SLOW DANCE).
Sometimes she writes about teenagers (ELEANOR & PARK, FANGIRL).
Sometimes — actually, a lot of the time — she writes about lovesick vampires and guys with dragon wings (THE SIMON SNOW TRILOGY).
Recently, she’s been writing short stories (SCATTERED SHOWERS) and a whole lot of comics (RUNAWAYS, PUMPKINHEADS, LOIS AND CLARK).
Rainbow lives in Omaha, Nebraska.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2018I was a huge fan of the original comics - although I kind of fell off the wagon after they introduced Klara - so I was a little wary that they were going to bring them back.
Turns out I was worried for nothing!
In my opinion, this is a faithful and honorific reintroduction into the world of the Runaways. Everyone here seems to be portrayed accurately and it does a nice job of gingerly bringing readers up to speed with what's been going on with the Runaways since we last saw them... without beating them over the head with a "here's what you missed on Runaways" recap.
The art is lovely and I really enjoy the character designs of the Runaways as we see them now, years later. The plot is fun and interesting and keeps you on your toes. The writing is excellent - Rainbow Rowell does a good job of writing "young" people without making them sound like terrible, annoying people like a lot of writers do! A lot of authors make it pretty clear they haven't interacted with anyone under 25 in a very long time - Rowell doesn't have this problem.
My only complaint is that I wish this book was longer... but that's not really a complaint, just a wish. ;) I'll definitely buy the second volume when it's released later this year.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2018Rainbow Rowell and Kris Anka present a gorgeous revival of the classic Marvel series Runaways. Years have passed since the super powered teens ran away from their evil parents (a secret super villain organization called the Pride) and the heart of their team (Gert) died tragically. Now with the former friends splintered a catalyst will dramatically bring them back together: Gert back from the dead. Lovable jock Chase has managed to alter the time stream to save his girlfriend from her dark fate but in so doing has thrust a strange new existence on Gert where her friends and the world around her have all continued on without her. Inspired by Gert's return, Chase and Nico Minoru decide to gather the rest of the Runaways to reform their surrogate family. With Karolina, Molly, the head of Victor Mancha the android, and Old Lace the velociraptor, the team is back on the road and together again. Between Rowell's great character work and Anka's gorgeous artwork this is a revival that more than lives up to the classic original run.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2018This is the sequel that I have been waiting for since the series got mishandled and subsequently cancelled. Rainbow Rowell shines in this lovely continuation of one of the most popular and original titles to have come at the turn of the century. The characters are similar, yet different from the ones that we have left behind courtesy of events that have taken place such as Avengers Arena and A-Force. The story is a classic 'getting the gang back together' arc that has your refusal of the calls, but features and old favorite. The art is perfectly suited to the storyline, and they handle Old Lace like a pro. I cannot wait to see where this story goes, and even if the road is bumpy, I am completely optimistic about th future of this title in these very capable hands.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2019I had never read the Runaways before Rainbow Rowell started this series. I was hooked from issue one! The characters are engaging from the first page but what stands out to me is how well written their storyline is and how rich the characterization is. The art is stunning, not only for the creativity of the representations but for the richness of detail and individuality of the characters. They live, breathe, fight, and love and truly resonate with the reader. Riveting story line. Brilliant art. Such a wonderful return to these iconic characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2018Exceptional from start to finish. Anyone who adored Brian K Vaughn's first 3 volumes is going to adore what Rainbow and Kris have crafted. Not since the original series has any other creative team so perfectly captured the tone and voice and aesthetic of these beloved characters. The synergy between the author and artist is so evident in their incredible execution of tender quiet beats and literal laugh out loud moments, while continually wowing the viewer with each subsequent issue's unique and personalized sense of style. This is top shelf graphic novel stuff, folks.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2018I love comics and I love Rainbow Rowell, so when I heard that she would be writing for a comic series I nearly passed out with excitement. Well okay, not really but I was really freaking excited.
I didn't know much about The Runaways before reading this first volume, apparently it used to be a big hit but I wasn't reading comics in the early 2000s. I don't really think you need to read the first comic series to be able to pick up what's going on and like the characters.
I really liked all the characters. They each have great personalities and are driven by different things. I couldn't tell who is my favorite because they are all my favorite, and they are the main reason I'm going to continue with the series, despite the fact that I didn't love the comic.
So why didn't I love the comic? Well, it comes down to two reasons. The first being that despite how gorgeous the art is, the frames were sometimes hard to follow. I found that I was reading things out of order and that was really confusing and frustrating. The second reason I didn't love this comic was I felt like the story was pretty simplistic. The characters are introduced, they fight a bad guy and then get the gang back together. There could have been more going on, but maybe that's what the second volume will do. And for that reason I do intend to keep reading.
I gave this comic 3 stars on Goodreads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
Love these comics! They're a wonderful start to the Runaways. I have read the second volume, and pre-ordered the third! Cannot recommend these enough!
Note, you don't have to read the "original series" to understand this reboot, which is great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilhantemente escrito e desenhado

It's great to see the band back together :) I've been reading Runaways since I was a teenager and it's great to see them grow up with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rainbow Rowell is a genius <3
Rainbow Rowell is one of my favourite authors, so when I found out she was writing comics, I didn't care that I'd never heard of the characters (apart from the occasional tv show screencap here and there), I bought all three available volumes. I just finished reading this one, and I'm hooked! Rowell is really incredible at making me care so much for characters I've only just met. It's a funny, touching, entertaining comic with perfect pace that I had a great time reading. Also, Kris Anka does a superb artistic job! 10/10.
Can't wait to read volume 2 :)
