Why We Built The Gore-Tex Down Parka

We're all about exploring the local mountain town after a day of skiing, and for that we need solid winter protection. We made sure that this casual parka combines the best of two worlds, with lightweight lofty down to ward off winter's chillier weather, and reliable waterproof protection in case it snows in the city. Soft baffling lines the interior, keeping valuable body warmth close at hand, and the Gore-Tex membrane pairs nicely with fully sealed seams to guarantee that we stay dry. We gave the jacket a relaxed fit for urban style, and it features a longer length that's much appreciated when spending an extended time on foot.

Solid Parka!

Familiarity:

I ordered a parka from Lands End, Patagonia, TNF and this one from Backcountry to compare. I'm 6'2, ~190 lbs with a longer torso/arms. Of all of the parkas I tried on, this was hands down the best! The Gore-Tex membrane provides perfect waterproof/windproof protection. The side pockets were perfectly placed (other brands placed the pockets much higher up, or too far on the side so your arms were uncomfortable). The hood is large so it's extremely easy to flip up even with a beanie on, and it stays there once it's up. It has a roomy fit so I can layer underneath it, yet it doesn't appear bulky like some of the other parkas I tried on. I really appreciate the minimal branding (I despise giant logos), but that's personal taste. This parka looks nice in colder weather in Washington DC, and it keeps me warm when I travel home for the holidays in Northern Wisconsin. Can't recommend it enough.

Every aspect of this coat is super high quality. Very happy with the purchase - highly recommend it. I went with the Large size to ensure roominess. I'm 5'8 1/2 and 180 lbs. with a bit of a belly, and large was the right choice for me.

I bought mostly TNF and Marmot over the years. Heard of Backcountry but never bought anything from them. I like Gore-Tex and this jacket fit the bill. Since I read all the reviews before purchase, I feel an obligation to return the favor. 1. Sizing. I am 5'10" 180 lbs and 40" chest. Medium fit me fine. Same as medium on TNF and Marmot jackets. So true to size. 2. Warm. I tested this jacket when it's 20F outside and little wind 5 mph with just a thermal underwear underneath and I felt relatively warm. Although comparing to the TNF McMurdo it's no contest, TNF is much warmer in even colder weather. But this jacket was not designed to compete with TNF McMurdo. 3. Style. Traditional and old time style. What you see is what you get. Hood was too big. Vents were ugly and superfluous. 4. Workmanship. Great and meticulously built. 5. Price. Even at discount at end of season, I feel it's overpriced. Actually, I found that Mountain hardwear and Columbia have similar Gore-Tex jackets for less. So my total rating is a 3.

Pretty dang good jacket if on sale

I do love this jacket. I was skeptical as there were no reviews online anywhere. And barely any info. No fill weight no fabric specifications etc. I took a leap cause I mean I kinda trust this place its a good site so hey. It came with a little down batch test. 660 fill goose down at 90/10 and ~1% being feather i don't remember exactly. Anywho, its something like 70-80denier nylon. It is loud and fairly durable. It doesn't have a whole whole lot of down but definitely a warm jacket especially with the goretex. The fit is perfect. Im bout 6'1 200lb got the xl. Just enough space to layer under and also looks great with a t shirt. The sleeves come down to the base of my fingers at or just below knuckle. The cuffs are soft stretchy and wonderful. The hood is quite large definitely fits a helmet tho this isn't really a jacket I had imagined using a helmet with but I suppose. The cinch cord in back definitely helps. It is pretty well insulated. The pockets are like felt lined really cozy. I got the blue and it looks great, its multi colored strings like a t-shirt fabric so it looks nice. Dark navy blue I guess. Zippers are all ykk vislon 8 plastic zippers but nice. Stitching was all well done, in a fairly tight 11 per inch. Its a quality jacket it really is. Baffles are like 2.5 inches and its all well kept in place. Haven't had any down seepage. Mild pleasant odor it is very clean down. I mean what else do you wanna know? The reason this is 4 stars is because the pit zips are...I dont wanna say useless. But its just a pocket on your pit region. It doesn't get thru the down layer it has a solid pocket fabric. It only breaks the gtx layer . Which theres real not a difference. That disappointed me enough to knock honestly 2 stars but the rest of the jacket is so good ill give it a 4. Edit I wrote a review with initial impressions earlier. That was before the tx winter storm. We've been without power since Sunday. Currently Wednesday. Truck stuck in garage. No fireplace to burn wood. No where to get wood. No running water either. And this is everybody in tx for the most part. Now obviously we getting creative to survive but. This jacket kept me warm! For the first time ever tx had chill warnings or whatever. 1st time! We got into the negatives. 15" of snow in 24hrs And with just a t-shirt on and my truspec water resistant pants I was ok/am ok. Hopefully we can get some heat soon. Literally freezing in the house. Their isn't a whole lot of down. But its in all the right places. Body mapped? Idk. the hood is quite large but cinches beautifully with the drawstring. Absolutely perfect hood. solid brim and stays put. . Thats all I really wanted to update about. It is a warm jacket. The hood is actually very nice. Ill be buying more backcountry gear for sure. Wanted to post a pic but wouldn't let me. Looks really sharp

This baby is an excellent Urban Parka!!!

I looked all over for a well made, thoughtfully designed, not too bulky, mid-priced parka that would keep me warm and dry through cold, wet and windy days and something I could layer up for sub-freezing temps in NYC and I've found it in this Backcountry Original. I love this thing!. Out of the box I was immediately impressed with the quality of this parka. The Gortex fabric is nicer than I expected. It's well made and the stylish cut is right for me. I'm between M and L sizes in most brands. I carry a bit of upper body muscle and it can be a challenge finding jackets that fit well. Medium jackets are often too tight in the shoulder and chest area, yet, the right length. And Large sizes are often too frumpy and baggy on me. However, this baby in a large provides just a bit of room in the chest, yet, still remains sleek. The arms and over all length work for me. As for warmth, it's a 90/10 ratio, 650 Down fill, which is good. Although, it's not heavy like a puffer, it's warm. However, I did feel a chill in the arms when the temp dipped below 32 degrees F while I had a thin wool sweater zipped up over my neck and T shirt beneath. So, for temps below freezing, if you're not active and generating heat, you'll need a base layer. I do love the lined pockets and the gators at the wrists. The collar is large and I like it that way. Snapping the collar up does a great job protecting from the wind and cold. This parka feels good, sturdy and cozy. And the Gortex cuts the wind nicely, yet, doesn't feel tech like. It's got a smooth feel with only a bit of sound. The hood is the only real flaw. It's way too big. Kind of goofy big and flops down almost over my eyes. I read in another review that it's designed to go over a helmet. Anyway, it's not a deal breaker. I'm so pleased with this parka that the hood is just a minor issue. Overall, I'm super happy with this baby. I think you will be too. Thank you Backcountry!

Looked for a parka style jacket for business trips to the NE. Normally buy Patagonia and Arcteryx, huge fan of Patagonia products and company. With a local Patagonia store nearby, I tried on most of their parka style jackets for this season (2020/21) and couldn?t find one that worked. Saw this Backcountry parka, read reviews, had some great online help from a Gearhead, and ordered Medium and Large. I?m 6? 1? 180-185 and the medium fits just right, huge win as I?m often awkwardly between a medium and large with Orvis and Patagonia. I?m a 34? sleeve and the sleeves on this jacket are right on, reaching down past the wrist onto the top of the hand. Fabric is sturdy, high end, weather proof, gore tex. Hood is down filled, doesn?t feel too large. Wrist gaiters are stretchy, comfortable, durable. Pockets are great, easy to access, sharp looking. Gore Tex label and Back Country goat on sleeve are subtle and look just right to me. Have always loved the GOAT and now see it more than just a label for an online store. Officially volunteering myself as an advance tester for any future GOAT GEAR. I rarely write reviews but I?m blown away by this Backcountry original.

This jacket is super nice. Great construction, great materials. The jacket does have a lot of great features. I particularly like the longer length, double zipper, wrist gaiters, snap closure storm flap, lots of very functional pockets, and of course tried and true Gore Tex and warm, soft, fluffy down filling. I like the jacket a lot, but it would be perfect with two improvements. First, the jacket does fit a bit large. This is great for days you need to layer, but I wish it had an adjustable waist cinch to snug up the waist and help keep the breeze out on days you don?t need multiple layers. Also, the hood is huge. It does have adjustability from the back, but I wish it also had vertical hood adjustability in the front to cinch the hood opening and, again, help to better keep the breeze out.

The collar of the actual jacket is so high up that when the jacket isn't fully zipped up it gets in the way of your face/vision. The feel and material of the jacket is great but it just fit too loose for my liking.

Color isn't accurate in the photo

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

My son picked the rosin-colored jacket and we were disappointed that it is actually more of an Army green. I returned the jacket and am now waiting for the blue one. It seems like a nice coat otherwise.
