A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow Hardcover – 10 Nov. 2020

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,468 ratings

A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club YA Pick

"A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow is an absolute delight. Cozier than a hand-knit gray cardigan and richer than Abuela's pastelito recipe, Namey takes you from Miami to Winchester, and leaves your heart belonging to both." --Rachael Lippincott, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Five Feet Apart

Love & Gelato meets Don't Date Rosa Santos in this charming, heartfelt story following a Miami girl who unexpectedly finds love--and herself--in a small English town.

For Lila Reyes, a summer in England was never part of the plan. The plan was 1) take over her abuela's role as head baker at their panadería, 2) move in with her best friend after graduation, and 3) live happily ever after with her boyfriend. But then the Trifecta happened, and everything--including Lila herself--fell apart.

Worried about Lila's mental health, her parents make a new plan for her: Spend three months with family friends in Winchester, England, to relax and reset. But with the lack of sun, a grumpy inn cook, and a small town lacking Miami flavor (both in food and otherwise), what would be a dream trip for some feels more like a nightmare to Lila...until she meets Orion Maxwell.

A teashop clerk with troubles of his own, Orion is determined to help Lila out of her funk, and appoints himself as her personal tour guide. From Winchester's drama-filled music scene to the sweeping English countryside, it isn't long before Lila is not only charmed by Orion, but England itself. Soon a new future is beginning to form in Lila's mind--one that would mean leaving everything she ever planned behind.

This felt like a giant hug in a book. A hallmark movie in print.
It was cheesy and predictable and feel good.
I loved the characters on the book that felt fleshed out and three dimensional, Jules with all her bad a** rock chick vibes and flora who’s sweet but a little lost and loveable Orion who’s as warm as his cardigan. The book transported me to the quant English countryside and I truly envisioned it all and would buy it fully if I didn’t actually live in England. The landscaping sounds accurate though I’m not from the south but that’s believable but I don’t know many British who are obsessed with figs in desserts like the book implies and we don’t have “afternoon tea” everyday. I drink PG Tips several times a day and have only ever had afternoon tea with the posh tea and sandwiches etc a handful of times.
While she wandered around with Orion it did read a little like a tour guide manual at times with information garnered from the internet rather than experience. At others it read perfectly like I was there seeing it with my own eyes (the old castle ruins for example)
The wording and speech was very accurate. I can’t speak for the Winchester area since I’ve never been so I don’t know any local slang or dialects, but the Interactions between the characters felt authentically British and realistic.
The story was a little predictable but that’s kinda why I love cheesy Hallmark movies, it’s knowing everything will be just fine. It’s being caccooned in the safety of knowing where things are going.
Lila is arrogant as a chef but I guess that’s accurate too as all chefs I know all think their cooking is the bomb and so this seems to fit on trend. Also I thought she was a bit judgy of our use of the word sorry (she implies she only apologises when it worthwhile making her apology more valuable and it put me on the defensive reading it a little. But otherwise she was sweet and she grew as a character from overly dramatic pushy and unaware of her own flaws to at least see her own flaws and see other people
    I like that she grew
I liked the Spanish throughout but I’m glad I read it on kindle with the translate button

Overall it was a nice nothingness story that was easy to read and Enjoyable and felt like a summers evening

I bought this to try to encourage boys and girls with a Kit Connor Fixation to read. No one has bothered to borrow it yet but maybe when the film comes out they will and then they will be grateful.

Bought this because Reese Witherspoon recommended it. It’s youth fiction so pretty limited for adults.

If you are from the UK I 100% advise you to read this book and not listen to the audiobook! No offence but why on earth would you chose a narrator for a book set in England who’s attempt at an English accent literally made me pull a face like i was licking a lemon! She was doing a posh English accent too which is easier for Americans to pull off but no.... just no. I felt like I was watching one of those horrendous Murder She Wrote episodes set in Ireland 😮😮

YA contemporary novel with tropes of found family, friends to lovers.
I loved this book! And the cover is so beautiful!
It was super cute 🥰 with the right mix of serious and inspiring parts. The character growth was also really well done. My only critique was that I wish it was longer! I want to keep following Lila and Orion’s story.

Very cute story with sweet MCs. There is no spice, which I find refreshing because I dont want to read chapters of that in a short book.
I really liked the way the relationship between the two developed.
