Review
Full Disclosure is romantic, funny, hopeful, and unflinchingly real, with some next-level theater kid geekery to boot. Simone is the kind of brilliant, messy, nerdy teen I love to root for. I'm so glad her story is in the world. โ Becky Albertalli, New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda
Mind-blowingly powerful, Full Disclosure is an intense, unapologetically sex-positive read . . . A book I wish I'd had growing up. โ Sandhya Menon, bestselling author of When Dimple Met Rishi
Fearless and affirming, Full Disclosure is a celebration of love, friendship, and being true to yourself. โ Marieke Nijkamp, author of This Is Where It Ends

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2020Full Disclosure was one of the books I read in June during Pride Month, and it was one of my favourites that month and one of my favourites of the year. I didnโt really know where to start with a review so I knew it was perfect for a Reasons to Read!
Simone has had to move school after her previous school found out sheโs HIV-positive. Hoping to fly under the radar at her new school she begins to make new friends romance blooms between her and a boy. But then she receives an anonymous letter threatening to tell the school of her HIV. Full Disclosure is such a stunning debut from a young author and I am so excited to see where Garrettโs career takes her.
HIV POSITIVE REPRESENTATION
The heading for this works two-fold: it is representation of someone who is HIV positive, and it is also positive representation of someone who has HIV. Iโm pretty certain I havenโt read a book before which featured a main character with HIV, and if I have I doubt it was portrayed well. Simone lived a healthy life with HIV and itโs informative and wonderful. To this day people are still scared of people who have HIV and books like this one will eventually help to rid people of fear and misconceptions. It was clear throughout Full Disclosure that Garrett did a lot of research into the condition.
SEX POSITIVE
I love reading YA books which are sex positive, and Full Disclosure is definitely a standout in this regard. Simone and her friends discuss masturbation, they go to a sex shop and look at toys. These scenes were so nice to read, I think had this kind of stuff been in the boks I read when I was a teen I would have felt so much better about discovering these things myself. I think thereโs a lot of attention and jokes about masturbation for teenage boys but it is so rarely mentioned when it comes to other genders, and I hope books like Full Disclosure can help break that barrier down and normalise it.
FANTASTIC DISCUSSIONS ABOUT QUEERNESS
Throughout the book there are some wonderful discussions about queerness and fluidity. Simone doesnโt feel like sheโs queer enough and isnโt sure about her identity. She has a number of queer friends and 2 dads who are very certain in who they are but Simone has no idea really.
FUNNY & HEARTWARMING
Above all Full Disclosure is a coming of age story, and you know I love those. Itโs a story about self-acceptance and understanding. Simone struggles with who she is and as she comes to terms with her Positive status she also comes to terms with her sexuality and her place in the world. If you, like me, love coming of age stories but are looking for diverse voices and new takes on the genre then Full Disclosure is definitely a book to consider.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2020I snatched up this novel as Iโve come across very few novels featuring characters living with HIV. The author has very clearly done a lot of research on the subject and the book is extremely educational on the subject of HIV, protection and sex in general. Sex is discussed very matter of factly, which is refreshing to see.
โI realised I could fail at something I didnโt even like. It would be so much better to fail at something I love than something that already makes me miserableโ
I loved seeing a same sex parenting couple โ I delight in seeing representation within novels. That said, in this book some of the LGBTQIA representation felt a little forced. I have read novels with a similar high level of representation that managed to seem organic, but this felt more like adding a label to every character. I found the repetition of Simone running her fingers through her hair tedious and wished it had at least had a variety of phrasing.
The author is a mere 17 years of age, and this is a masterful debut. The emotional side of HIV and othersโ emotive reactions thereto is handled with real insight. I canโt wait to see more of her work.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2019Teenager Simone has not had an easy life. She was born with HIV and has had to take antiretroviral medication daily to control the growth of the virus, plus all the hospital visits and group talks. She also had to move school after she told someone she thought she could trust about her HIV but the girl decided to spread it around and people began treating her differently, staying away from her, calling her names, etc.
At her new school, no-one knows, not even the teachers, or so she thought. When she starts dating Miles, Simone receives an anonymous letter telling her to stay away from him or the person will tell the school about her HIV.
Simone doesnโt want to be held to ransom about her illness, however, she also doesnโt want the whole school to find out and for her life to end up how it was at her old school.
There are two things about this book that hit me within a few chapters of reading it, the authors easy writing style and how diverse the book truly is.
Author Camryn Garrett has a way with words, itโs as if she is talking directly to her teenage audience (yes I know Iโm a little, okay a lot above the teenage years), but it is not surprising how her words come across when you realise that she wrote the book at just seventeen.
The bookโs diverseness represents the world today. We have Simone being brought up by her two gay dads. One of her best-friends is queer and Simone herself is Bi.
The book talks openly about subjects that some YA books steer clear from, including sex, buying vibrators, masturbation, and a whole lot more. The book also covers subjects such as safe sex and sexual health as well as answering some of your questions about living with HIV.
All of the characters are realistic and wonderful to get to know and understand. If you are a teenager at school then this book will probably speak to you more than someone of my age and that is who the book is for. It is an amazing story mixed with factual information on lots of subjects teenagers might want to know about but are too scared or embarrassed to ask.
Overall the book is a poignant, heart-warming read that I simply adored from cover to cover. A fresh new voice in the YA market that truly knows her audience and is exceptionally relatable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air in a stale genre
I thought the premise was interesting, but I did not expect this to be as well written, heartfelt, and honest as it is. The main character is dimensional, believable, and above all, so very human.
The casual representation meant so much to me. Healthy asexual representation is so rare, and Garrett nails it. It's very clear that she's thoroughly researched every aspect of this book, especially the ones she has no personal experience with.
This author is one to watch. Her talent is astounding, and I can't wait to see where her career goes from her. From everything I've read, her second book is just as good. Can't wait to read more from such an amazing author!

FULL DISCLOSURE BY Camryn Garrett
โMy HIV isnโt a threat to you but your ignorance is a threat to meโ
โDo you know why HIV-Positive people donโt disclose? Because itโs dangerous. People have been injured and even murdered for disclosing.โ
Book Summary
Simone Garcia-Hampton is a 17year old junior starting over at a new school after her HIV status was disclosed to everyone at her old school by a close friend- Sarah. Simone starts this new school thinking everything is going to be different; this is a fresh start, no one knows her here, but it isnโt.
At first, everything seemed like it was going great. She is living her dream, she is the student director for a huge musical RENT which is coincidentally about living with AIDS this is where she meets and hooks up with her crush Miles- who is surprisingly charming and witty unlike your average high school jock. Miles is different. He is mature in a way that surprises Simone.
She also finds โher peopleโ Claudia and Lydia who she became best friends with almost immediately, sharing every little secret from romantic relationships, sexuality, Gender identity, Sex, GSA meetings, trip to the sex toy shop, to dinner with her Dads except her HIV status.
She is hesitant to tell her new friends or Miles, this isnโt because she is ashamed, but she knows people are ignorant about HIV, the reaction from her last school after her HIV positive status was disclose proved that. She is afraid they may out her or treat her differently like her best friend/first love interest Sarah did so he keeps it to herself until she starts getting scary notes from an unnamed source threatening to out her to school if she doesnโt stay away from lacrosse player Miles.
Reflection
I fell in love with this book almost immediately. I mean how could i not? I flip to page 6 and I am reading about not one, but two forms of birth control mentioned by these intelligent and curious young characters. The book gods finally heard my cry for a book written by a young person for young people that openly discusses everything relationships, sex, sexuality, and birth control in a way that is fun, that is relatable, that answers questions in a manner that is devoid of shame, fear, and guilt but embraces curiosity and Camryn did that for me with Full disclosure.
This book is a conversation starter, it is the type of book I imagine would be passed around in my all-girls high school if I were still 13 and in high school.
It touches on a lot of topics.
Firstly, we see the importance of having a strong support system- When Simoneโs status was disclosed her Dads, her best friends, her boyfriend were the ones who advocated for her, supported her, and stood by her all through. This shows us the importance of having a community of people that acknowledges you and put your needs first.
I loved loved loved Miles, he was one of my favorite characters aside from Simone obviously because his reaction was in the most unpredictable after Simone disclosed her status to him even though he didnโt know much about HIV. He did his own research after been told instead of bombarding Simone with ignorant questions that could have easily been answered by a little google research. There is something to be learned here. It is okay to be curious, it is okay to ask clarifying questions but it is just as important to do our own research, to check our own biases instead of burdening marginalized people with educating us. We see this burden put on marginalized groups time and time again as if dealing with oppression isnโt a burden enough.
In the end, I liked that this wasnโt a sad tale. I want us to read more happy stories of marginalized people. I want us to read more stories where characters living with HIV get their happy ending and live a full and fulfilling life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Debut for Theatre Lovers
Simone is directing her high school's production of RENT and I may be biased but RENT is my favorite musical and that just added to my experience reading this book! Simone switches schools when she is outed to the school by another student about her HIV status. Now, at her new school, she is happy living life with her friends Lydia and Claudia - Lydia is bisexual and Claudia is an ace lesbian - until she finds a letter in her locker telling her that she must stop spending time with the guy she likes, Miles or the anonymous writer will reveal her HIV status.
This is a very important read and I learned a lot about HIV from Simone's story. Full Disclosure is a very sex-positive book. There are many scenes talking about how having HIV doesn't make sex impossible, the MC masturbates and she goes to a sex shop with her friends to buy a vibrator. There's also discussion about sex with Claudia, an ace lesbian. Simone is raised by her two queer fathers; Paul and Javier. Throughout the novel, Simone goes through the process of questioning her sexuality (bisexual). But, the romance she has is with a boy from the lacrosse team, Miles.
Garrett's debut novel talks heavily about being an adopted Black girl who is HIV-positive. Simone struggles a lot and we see how HIV affects her life. If you like musicals, you'll love this book since it is filled with references! This is a very important YA novel. We need more books like Full Disclosure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful novel that helped me through pandemic
I have been stressed and anxious during this whole pandemic mess, and one side effect was being unable to focus on or enjoy a book (something I normally love!) But since I'm a fan of the author I picked this novel up and I'm so glad. I read it over a couple days, because I couldn't put it down. The characters came across real and fully fleshed out, the plot was quick, and the ending satisfying. Laughed out loud more than once. Definitely recommend for fans of YA!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful book
I really enjoyed this book. Simone is a teenager who is HIV positive. Her dads try to be supportive as possible, but can sometimes come off a little overprotective. She is helpimg direct the play at her school called, "Rent" when she ends up meeting a nice guy name Miles. Someone is out to see that Simone doesn't end up happy with Miles. Can they keep her secret? Will they tell the whole school? Several hard topics in this book but it's worth every page. Love, friendships, jealousy, sadness, happiness and so many other feels will make you love Simone every step of the way. She is one strong woman and my all time favorite protagonist. ๐๐๐๐๐ @FullDisclosure @camryngarrett #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookreader #beautifulcover
