Snazzy and tough all in one

Apple gave the iPhone 12 Pro an updated look that harkens back to bygone era where the edges are squared, this time with stainless steel. It’s a newer look that fits right in with the company’s other high-end products, like the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air. You can also get it in an assortment of colours, including silver, gold, graphite and pacific blue.

You also get a new type of glass on the front and back that aims to be four times tougher than any previous iPhone glass when it comes to withstanding damage. It’s called Ceramic Shield, and while not something never-before-seen, the iPhone 12 is the first to use it on the front.

Being an OLED panel, you get the best possible visual display an iPhone is capable of thus far. And at 6.1-inches, it’s also bigger than the iPhone 11 Pro’s 5.8-inch display. That extra space only makes it nicer when viewing content that supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision support for the ultimate visual splendour. 

Powerful capabilities

The iPhone 12 Pro gets a new processor in Apple’s own A14 Bionic chip, plus a faster GPU (graphical processing unit), for a step up in the kind of games you can play on it. Everything on the phone should feel faster, and the additional power makes itself felt in some of the new features introduced in this phone.

On the back, underneath the panel, is a new magnetic system called MagSafe that works to better align the phone with wireless chargers and MagSafe-certified accessories. With proper alignment, wireless charging rates are always at optimal levels, so you don’t have to wait as long to refill the battery. The technology will also apply to cases and other accessories to make it easier to attach the phone when necessary.

Pushing more than pixels with the camera

New camera features put the iPhone 12 Pro on a different level than previous iPhone models. In addition to the three lenses—a main, telephoto and ultrawide—there is a LIDAR sensor included to help dramatically improve autofocus in low-light situations and improve the bokeh effect in portrait shots. Apple’s Deep Fusion technology also kicks in on all three lenses to help improve composition.

The main lens has a wider f/1.6 aperture—the widest ever for an iPhone—capable of bringing in up to 27% more light for extra brightness in low-light situations. The 12-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto lenses are relatively unchanged, though you can now shoot in Night mode with those, rather than just the main lens. Night mode also now works on the front-facing lens as well for bright low-light selfies.

You will also get to capture photos in Apple’s all new ProRAW image format for even more precision when editing afterwards. Then there’s the ability to record HDR video in Dolby Vision for more vivid colours that should stand out on any TV supporting that format.

5G is on board and ready to fly

The iPhone 12 lineup and its support for 5G is a first for Apple, and the 12 Pro will be ready whenever you’re able to take advantage of the faster speeds it’s capable of. It supports both millimetre wave and Sub-6 5G standards, and can fall back onto LTE or 3G in areas were coverage hasn’t reached that level yet.

It is equipped with a Smart Data mode to automatically move to LTE whenever you do something on the phone that doesn’t need the extra speed and throughput of the 5G connection. Once 5G truly rolls out in Canada, your iPhone 12 Pro will immediately be able to take you to new data heights.
