Sinister sorcery. Gallows humor. A queer romance so glorious it could be right out of fae legend itself. Master of One is a fantasy unlike any other.

Rags the thief has never met a pocket he couldn’t pick, but when he’s captured by a sorcerer with world-ending plans, he realizes even he is in over his head. Forced to use his finely honed skills to nab pieces of an ancient fae relic, Rags is stunned to discover that those “relics” just happen to be people:

A distractingly handsome Fae prince,

A too-honorable Queensguard deserter,

A scrappy daughter of a disgraced noble family,

A deceptively sweet-natured prince,

A bona fide member of the Resistance,

And him. Rags.

They may all be captives in the sorcerer’s terrible scheme, but that won’t stop them from fighting back. And, sure, six unexpected allies against one wicked enemy doesn’t make for generous odds, but lucky for him, Rag’s not generous—he’s smart. And he has a plan that just might get them out of this alive.

With the heist and intrigue of Six of Crows and the dark fairy tale feel of The Cruel Prince, this young adult fantasy debut will have readers rooting for a pair of reluctant heroes as they take on a world-ending fae prophecy, a malicious royal plot, and, most dangerously of all, their feelings for each other.

Review

“By the end, readers will be itching for more… A captivating and satisfying queer fantasy.” — Kirkus Reviews

“Dazzling and creative… This sterling start to a high fantasy series features creative world-building, nuanced and witty characters, good versus evil, a perilous quest, and a touch of romance for both queer and straight characters. Recommended for most fantasy lovers.” — School Library Journal

“Masters of character-driven stories, Jones and Bennett yet again deliver with a foul-mouthed thief, an enchanting fae prince, a headstrong woman, and an ex-Queensguard, to name only a few…Though the dreamy fae-mortal romance doesn't flourish until the latter half, fans of the authors will happily subsist on the story's consistent sharp-witted voice alone.” — Booklist

“Classic YA fantasy tropes break into a fast-paced fantasy revolution whose heart, grit, and consequences are more than the sum of its parts… A smart, stakes-loaded LGBTQ fantasy well worth sticking with, for fans of Six of Crows and Megan Whalen Turner.” — Publishers Weekly

Praise for Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett:Havemercy is an absolute charmer of a book: at once exciting, romantic, and funny.” — Kirkus Reviews

“These ladies write like a house on fire, delivering fantasy’s most pleasant surprise since Temeraire himself took wing in 2006...An impressive debut.” — SFReviews.net

“Delicious!  The characters are unique, entrancing and believable: dinner-party guests you never want to see go home.   I will gladly walk again in this city, now that I know my way around.” — Ellen Kushner, author of The Privilege of the Sword

“A dazzling cast memorable characters! Havemercy is a wonderful debut from two talented new authors.” — Lynn Flewelling, author of Shadows Return

“[The authors] vividly convey the testosterone-saturated world of fantasy fighter pilots in this fast-paced debut.” — Publishers Weekly

Innovative, steampunk inspired YA fantasy
Rags is a theif from Cheapside, down on his luck for being caught and held in prison. However Morien, one of the Queens sorcerers has a job for him, one that Rags cant refuses. Rags is enlisted for his talents to find some fae relics, only these are not your typical treasures, they're living and breathing. If Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones was the setting for a thief in desperate need of his mouth being scrubbed with soap, then you would have something along the lines of Master of One.A very enjoyable story, with plenty of comical dialogue thanks to Rags quick wit paired with the no nonsense Shining Talon. The cast of character is amazing, a hilarious theif, somber Fae, political corrupt sorcerer, a physically impaired prince and the ethereal One. Interwoven into the story is an ingenious gay take on sleeping beauty. The world building is superior, carefully crafted differences of landscape and architecture between the humans and fae kingdoms. The steampunk influences in the fae science are a fresh and unique idea bringing the relics to life in a radical manner. An innovative YA fantasy that stears clear of plot repetition. However there is one major drawback. Master of One is part of a series and I cant find any information on when the second book is due out. I have been informed it is a work in progress, but am desperate for more information on this.

Ok, enough of the alliteration. This is clearly intended as start of a series and I sincerely hope it goes to the six novels that seem to be set up. It has a good premise that goes deeper than good guys vs sadistic maniacs, and the core relationships are beautifully drawn. The prose is delicate and delightful and the world building is magical. The omni-sexual nature of the relationships (pretty much something for everyone, though I’m waiting for a solidly lesbian pairing) is deftly done and not always obvious at first glance - tho’ Rags’ was really far too slow on the uptake and that one could have moved a lot faster without any loss. Still, I loved this and can’t wait for the next one.

Master of One tells the story of Rags a thief and quite a brilliant one at that. Rags is happy to continue living his life until he’s coerced into helping the Queensguard and an superevil sorcerer steal a fae relic. Once Rags gets through all the tests he’s surprised to find that at the end of his trials there’s a stunningly gorgeous fae male by the name of Shiny Talon and not only is he a prince but he’s also Rag’s annoying personal assistant forever!! 😏❤️

Shiny is not the only beautiful, unexpected and strange thing that’s Rags experiences once he gets there. Once he is awake Shiny also wakes up One, a silver lizard who is part of something very dangerous and very valuable to the Queen and her sorcerers. Together One, Rags and Shiny must find Ones master and stop the clock that has now started ticking!!

Master of One is written from multiple POVs which I love, has fae, royalty, it’s queer, it has disability rep and has aaaaalll the romance!! Shiny is everything I love 😏😏 (I’m so jealous of Rags 😂😂) I really hope you guys add it to your TBRs!! ❤️❤️

The concept of Master of One is brilliant and I love a heist so much!! I love how the gang grow together, it so relatable and realistic (instalove is not e even in friendship). This is a book that’s been on my TBR for far too long and I’m so glad I’ve finally read it!! It’s an epic tale of fae, royalty and a thief who a stolen my heart!! 4✨

It's quite refreshing / different to read this sort of fantasy as a standalone - don't get me wrong, the ending is open enough to continue the story, but at the moment this is officially a standalone and I think that's kind of cool.

We have a cast of characters in here, but the main main guy is Rags, a sarcastic thief who is commandeered by the Queen and her sinister mage to break into a place that has hidden 'treasure'.

I had fun reading this book, I enjoyed all the characters - some more than others, as they had bigger, more complex personalities - there were some good twists and turns, and the magic system was pretty interesting with the shards and the fragments.

"The obstacle is the Way and Ego is the Enemy."

📣 : pp gay, pp with chronic pain and disability, ps transgender
TW : violence, murder, manipulation, torture

Rags, one of the finnest thieves of the queendom has been caught by the Queensguard. He has one job : find an old fae relic. But no one expected it to actually be... An old fae prince.

For a time, bookstagram has been flooded by a lot of faes stories, but they all seem the same. Too straight, too romance-center.
So I dig in and find some that I can finally love.

This one in particular caught my interest. As much as I love romance, I prefer when it's not the main topic of a story. Here, magics, royal plot and all these dangerous relics are at the center of this story.

Rags is my absolute favorite. Absolute incarnation of a rogue, sarcastic, bitter but with a good heart. His relation with Shiny is a really slow burn and well, that's really refreshing.
All the other characters have their particularities. Six relics, six people. A big love to Cab, a deserter who tries to earn his second chance.

There were deeper themes than I imagined at first. There is some notion of loss of consent, brutal manipulation, lies and esclavagism. I didn't expect it to be this way.

I must say that the multiplication of POV was at first really confusing. We didn't really understand who they were until Rags really met them, or maybe just I didn't understand it.

Whatever, I'm really really waiting for the sequel because this book settled everything it needs for the big battle, the final decision, for what will finally happen. Please continue to write it 🙏 @ladyjaiduh

5.0 out of 5 stars A deeply fun novel with great characters and world building
Reviewed in the United States on 2 March 2021
I cannot overstate how much I loved this book.

With the exception of the first 2-3 chapters, I finished it in one sitting, and I am NOT a fast reader, I just didn't want to put it down. The world-building was solid and immensely enjoyable, and the characters all felt real, with believable arcs that made you care for each of them.

I've seen some reviewers complain about the pacing, but to me it was perfect. If it had gone at the same pace as the first act, there would have been no time to take a step back and appreciate who everyone was, who they were turning into, and that was right about the time where the reader was introduced to more complicated perspectives from complicated characters, so a slight slowdown was more than warranted.

There are a lot of moving parts to this narrative, and it's not like it even slowed down that much, just enough for us to catch our breaths before barrelling boldly forward in the best possible way. Also of MAJOR note was the fantastic representation of POC, LGBTQ+ and disabled people. As someone is part of 2 of those 3 communities, it was extremely gratifying to see how deftly each of these groups was represented, but it's also not like you'd have to identify with any of them to not only love the story and the characters, but appreciate how well these people were written.

It never came across as representation for the sake of representation or tokenism, and it made complete sense within the confines of the story. As an author who works to strike a similar tone and balance in my own work, it was impossible not to be impressed by how effortless the authors made everything feel.

There were many times when lesser writers might have been tempted to delve into melodrama, and with good reason given the content, yet even when extremely weighty plot elements were revealed, there was an edge of humor that always lifted the tone from dwelling too much in its own drama.

If I had to pick a con, I suppose it would be that it took me a chapter or two to get used to some elements of their writing style, but I got over that VERY quickly. I would have liked the primary romance to move along more quickly, but that was more me being greedy, as the pace it moved within the story made complete sense for the characters involved.

Also, I'm not someone who ever sees twists coming, ever, and I did call a number of them in this novel, but I'm not sure if that's because they were obvious or if it was just because it's what I would have done if I was writing this story. But even those minor cons are tiny quibbles next to how much fun I had throughout this entire experience. This novel had better get a sequel!

I really enjoyed this! The writing is nice, and I liked the narrative structure. The plot was engaging, I didn't want to put it down.
The romance plot points seemed more like an afterthought, I wish there was more so that characters getting together made more sense.
The biggest thing for me was with how short chapters were. Part of what chapters do is to raise the stakes, usually fantasy writers will end on a sort of cliff-hanger, something to make you want to keep reading. You lose that sense of urgency or importance if it happens every other page. A lot of chapter separations were not necessary.
I hope the series gets a second book! I definitely want to know what happens next. Would recommend this to other people!

This amazing novel has it all:
    - A diverse and unique group of characters, whose role in the story is essential and each one of them has a POV chapter, which is cleverly written.
    - A smart, daring thief youth with smart mouth.
    - A Fae prince , who's supposedly the last representative alive from the Fae civilization and is one of the most precious characters to ever exist.
    - The best slow-burn romance built on forming a true bond and discovering the other's worth!
    - Jail break, Heist and Treasure hunting through ancient Fae ruins! I love the descriptions of the Castles.
    - A new, intriguing and beautiful representation of the Fae. You don't have human-sized Pixies, but tall, golden skinned, black-boned, tattooed creatures with wild beauty.
    - Mysterious sorcerer with clever shitty magic tricks who remains awesome villain till the end of the book and who has yet to reveal his true motives and identity.
    - Unique group of characters with their own dark and painful pasts and even physical disabilities, which do not stop each of them of being essential and bad ass.
    - Magical animal creatures, which are parts of great Fae weapon yet to be fully discovered.
The book already has a very special place in my heart, so give itt a chance and support the authors, because I want the sequel soon!
