The Invitation

Rate this book
A new, sexy standalone from #1 New York Times Bestseller, Vi Keeland.

The first time I met Hudson Rothschild was at a wedding. I'd received an unexpected invitation to one of the swankiest venues in the city.

Hudson was a groomsman and quite possibly the most gorgeous man I'd ever laid eyes on. He asked me to dance, and our chemistry was off the charts.

I knew it wasn't a good idea to get involved with him, considering the wedding I was at. But our connection was intense, and I was having a great time.

Though the fun came to a screeching halt when Hudson figured out I wasn't who I'd said I was. You see, that unexpected invitation I received? Well, it hadn't actually been addressed to me—it was sent to my ex-roommate who'd bounced a check for two months' rent and moved out in the middle of the night. I figured she owed me an expensive night out, but I guess, technically, I was crashing the wedding.

Once caught, I couldn't get out of there fast enough. As I bolted for the door, I might've plucked a few bottles of expensive champagne off the tables I passed, all while the gorgeous, angry groomsman was hot on my tail.

Outside, I jumped into a taxi. My heart ricocheted against my ribs as we drove down the block—but at least I'd escaped unscathed.

Or so I thought.

Until I realized I'd left my cell phone behind at the table.

Take one guess who found it?

This is the crazy story of how Hudson Rothschild and I met. But trust me, it's only the tip of the iceberg.

Vi Keeland did it again and proved why she is and will always be an automatic buy. The woman could write a phone book and I would read it because she knows how to tell a story.

Hudson and Stella’s story is why I read romance. They epitomized the perfect romance novel couple. Hudson was just spectacular. We all need a Hudson in our lives. He was the perfect businessman, boyfriend and father. His interactions with his daughter were priceless. His expressions of affection and openness of his feelings was so damn sweet.

This book has it all. You have some laugh out loud periods at the wedding that was crashed. I went through the whole spectrum of emotions including welling of my eyes.

You can’t go wrong with this one. I just wished it had more steam but the love scenes seem to fit this particular couple. I HIGHLY recommend it.

I'm positively giddy about this book, not for the romance which, btw, was ah-mazing but rather because of the Private Equity aspect. As you may or may not know, I've worked in Investment/Portfolio management for a while and Keeland's depiction of the process was accurate which just got me even giddier.

I know, right? Bliss.

well, another great VK book not about a woman who needs a man, but about the type of woman a man needs.

with strong lead characters, effortless writing, engaging plot (even though i guessed the ‘twist’ 25% into it), and a realistic and root-worthy romance, this is everything i have come to know and love about VK books.

the only thing preventing me from loving this more is how much page time is spent describing a start-up business. like, i get enough work in my own life, i dont want to spend my free time reading about someone elses job. lol. but i guess thats the risk you run with office romance stories.

overall, this is another great addition to VKs bibliography.

Update : (This is not related to book) I researched about secret diaries . I came across a few entries of a person who was suffering from bipolar disorder, depression, a lot of hallucinations and I guess two more mental illnesses. I read it and it was really disturbing. All I can say is that I won't be reading secret diaries anymore. My experience with them turned out to be bad.

2.5 stars
I have read only one book of the author Vi Keeland before and I had liked it but I can't say the same for this book. I have always avoided her books, not because I thought they are bad or something but because they always gave me vibes like that of 'YouTube Clickbait Videos'. This book proves exactly that. The synopsis sounds interesting, were it not for that I would have never read this book. The 'wedding crashing' that is mentioned is also interesting unfortunately after that it's not so 'interesting'. I had thought of DNFing the book after the third chapter because a part of me knew it will no longer be interesting, but since this book has been appearing a lot on my update feed, in Goodreads monthly newsletter and many people had liked it so... I continued reading. Now, I feel I should have DNFed it, I would have survived... and saved time.

Good things about the book:

I have given this book 2.5 stars for the wedding scene and Stella (heroine). Stella is unique and different, well for her work, hobbies, senses, and chocolate giving habit. These were the only things I liked in this book. It gave me a glimpse of what happens in the perfume and business world which I liked and now I am going to research secret diaries and probably buy one, they sound really interesting.

Now let's talk about why I didn't like this book.

Unfortunately, this book failed to deliver the major thing that it was supposed to be: Romance. I didn't feel the chemistry, sparks & connection. It was all instalove. I mostly don't like romances where main characters already love/like each other and are still not a couple because of some drama or worse because of some stupid reason. Here that thing was pretty average, everything between the main characters was average. I didn't understand that even after the misunderstanding was cleared why things didn't move on. All these caused the book to be a bit boring.

The second thing there wasn't a plot, not really. As simple as that.

Finally, the second part of the book, the other plot that was going on, was pretty predictable, really as soon as I read one line, I understood and just knew what was going to happen.

Overall it was an okay/decent read. You can read this book, give it a try but I don't recommend it. It's not the 'read once in life book' or 'read for enjoyment book' you can live without it and reading/not reading it will not affect your reading experience in any way (I guess)

I had high hopes for this book because the blurb sounded interesting to me; however, it didn’t live up to my expectations ☹

The heroine is sweet, interesting and very likable, and moreover, the hero is awesome, too but sadly, two amazing characters couldn’t save this book no matter what.

*********************************************

I don’t know what to call this book. Most of the time it sounded more like a business venture book rather than a romance book. It had an immense amount of business talk.

It seems that the writer was bored with the romance stuff and she didn’t feel like writing a good romance so she tried the business world. Those parts were very boring for me.

*********************************************

Other than that, it seems that the writer is also extremely bored with writing hot scenes so either she skips them or she cuts them very short. For example, during their first time, she gives us a short oral sex scene and after that it is already morning and the heroine just says how many times they did it. And the next intimate scene after so many pages is a blow job scene, followed by a very short sex scene.

Therefore, if you want your romance book to have some heat in it, go elsewhere, this doesn’t have any good hot scenes in it. It is more emotional than being hot. But still, there is more business talk than the talk about emotions - so there is that!

*********************************************

And as it is like a rule with Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, there is a plot twist which you can predict early on and waiting for it to happen becomes a torture as it is so clear what will happen.

And these two ladies have also started to use "fate and unbelievable coincidences" in their romance books but this much of a coincidence is for children’s fairy tales. I am sorry but it is too much for an adult romance book. Why do their books have to have GIANT coincidences?

This book has too many similarities to the book "Happily Letter After". I didn’t like that book and this one also has the same effect on me.

*********************************************

While writing this review, I checked my rating for all Vi Keeland books. I always try to give her books a chance because there are some I really loved but it seems that I used to give her books 4 or 5 stars in the past, then her books started to feel more like 3-star books and lately with the fiasco of "Dirty Letters" and "Happily Letter After", I started to give her books 2 stars. Such a shame, such a pity, indeed.

There is only one book that she wrote last year and I rated high and it is “All Grown Up”.

*********************************************

As for the rating of this book, I can say that the characters, both the hero and the heroine get 5 stars from me, so you can read the book for the sake of them if you like. However, the book as a whole is too boring, so I cannot give it more than 2,5 stars. And as it didn’t feel like 3, then 2 it is once again!

*********************************************

Safety:

Safe with no cheating between the main characters. They do not have sex with other people after they meet.

*********************************************

Here are the two QUOTES that I liked...

"We don’t get jealous of things we don’t want.”

***

"You’re not a woman who needs a man. You’re a woman a man needs."

This book is for you if—

1) you love Nick Bateman
2) you’re someone who is struggling to get your business up and running
3) you’re someone who works in Private Equity or Invesment Management company
4) you never read about a heroine who is a perfumist
5) you adore swoonworthy, respectful, wealthy CEO type hero
6) you’re a fan of the single parent trope

I find this book to be extremely relatable and authentic in the start-up business aspect. The romance is all sweet and wonderful. I like the fact that it develops slowly and conventionally, meaning that the characters stay as business partners and don’t complicate their relationship with casual sex.

It is only after they go on a date and make it official that they go all the way. Unfortunately, as much as their talk shop is riveting, their banter is lacking. Therefore, you’ll probably be bored if you’re not into the business or “work” side of the story. The “crash a wedding” setup of this book is entertaining.

Also, the heroine’s hobby to buy strangers’ diaries on e-Bay and read them is very peculiar and intriguing since I’ve never heard of such a thing. The twist at the end of the book is a long time coming but isn’t handled in a way to be exaggerating, OTT, or dramatic. The kid doesn’t play as much role as I would’ve liked, but the trope is still a nice touch.

Overall, this is a solid read. I just wish the chemistry between the characters could’ve been more... wOWw explosive and radiant I guess. If you like this book, I recommend checking out the other one this author wrote with Penelope Ward, Happily Letter After, since there are a couple similarities you can find.

yeah I think it's time to stop trying and accept the fact that this author's books (and Penelope Ward for what matters because they write practically the same) aren't for me, unless I'm having trouble sleeping, then I'd gladly pick up one of these.

If I'm being honest, I liked Stella and like the first 30% + the epilogue, but the rest of it? zzzzzZZZZzzzZZ. Their relationship? zzzZZZZzzZZz. Hudson? ZzzzZZZzzz. The plot twist? zzzZZZZzzzzZZZZ... I don't want to hurt anyone's sensibilities, but I find it implausible that someone didn't see this coming and was genuinely surprised by "the" revelation, sorry.

This tale, with a modern Cinderella like beginning, becomes something with so much depth and feeling it exceeded my expectations and left me swooning.

“Well, well, well… Cinderella finally came to collect her glass slipper, did she?” ~ Hudson

With THE INVITATION, Vi Keeland pens a thoughtful, fun, and touching novel with sassy banter, and delectable slow burn chemistry. It follows Stella Bardot, perfumist extraordinare and successful investor Hudson Rothschild, who’s sister’s wedding Stella and her best friend Fisher decided to crash.

The two hit if off at Hudson’s sister’s wedding. Unfortunately, Hudson realizes she’s not who she says she is, but is still intrigued by the fearless woman who didn’t back down from his challenge and yet, finding her cellphone after she escapes isn’t enough to get him another date. What will it take for Stella to give him another chance?

Hudson is absolutely swoon worthy, trust me on this. There’s so much thoughtfulness, love and charm behind the somewhat hard and stoic business man. I loved how he took care of his family and even he had reasons to be a bit jaded, he still pursued Stella shamelessly.
“If you need help doing someone you’ve never this weekend, just let me know.”
She rolled her eyes. “Something, not someone.”

Even though I LOVED Hudson, I think I found my 2021 girl crush, because Stella absolutely crushed it. She is an incredible heroine who is strong and fearless and smart. She’s the kind of person who’ll invent her own happiness system rather than let unpleasantness get her down. She makes friends with the woman whose wedding she crashed! She’s an odd duck with a beautiful heart.
“I think I’d like to conquer happiness next.” ~ Stella to Hudson

I loved the chemistry that sparked between Hunter and Stella. Even though she was afraid to being in a relationship with him, they were perfect for each other. But both must face their past (some of Stella’s past is sprinkled in flashback chapters in a very original way) in order to look forward for a future together. I also adored how Hudson saw her.
“You’re not a woman who needs a man. You’re a woman a man needs.” ~ Hudson to Stella

I really enjoyed how their romance unfolded. It was hooking, with a wonderfully “can’t put down” pace, charming secondary characters I loved (Hudson’s sister was a big part of their romance and Fisher is just the bestest friend EVER!) and a New York setting I can’t get enough of.

The Invitation is a standalone contemporary romance by Vi Keeland. It’s told from both points of view with a beautifully swoony happy ending. Genre/Trope: Billionaire romance | Office romance.

Overall Opinion: Meh. This felt a little lackluster for me. I really liked the h though! That says a lot since I’m typically pretty tough on my ratings for hs. I loved the (little bit of) interactions with the H’s daughter, I just wanted much more of that! I ended with being frustrated that this is yet another book that has their conflict resolved and jumps right into an epilogue. While the conflict wasn’t all that dramatic, it just doesn’t feel like a good enough resolution when that happens. I didn’t hate it or anything, but I bet I’ll forget this one pretty quickly as I move on the the next because it was underwhelming and just okay. Bummer, because I think I’m in the minority again with this one.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Stella and Hudson’s story. They meet when Stella crashes a wedding and he discovers her. They meet again when Stella ends up using his firm for capital venture help when trying to start her own business. They both have baggage to work through, some sweet moments, and some sexy times...and they get a HFN ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Stella and Hudson’s POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good until the end. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well otherwise.

Instalove: No, but instant connection and close to instalove once they get together.

H (Hero) rating: 4 stars. Hudson. I liked him. I loved his relationship with his daughter and sister.

h (heroine) rating: 4.5 stars. Stella. I really liked her. I appreciated her strength and optimism when being hurt in the past.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: No, but some mild jealousy

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: Not between mcs

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This ends kind of abruptly with what I would call a HFN ending

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

Not me being so into this book!! Some parts of the writing that I was skimming over, maybe some parts didn’t flow that well for me, but the story overall was great.

I wasn’t sure where we were going with the diary direction in the beginning, but it pulled through for the end. Not a plot I was expecting and I can’t say that I didn’t see it coming leading up to that chapter (I kinda did… but also I kinda didn’t), but very enjoyable!!

I like that this is more on the adult side, aka he has a daughter and she’s just as much a part of the story as they are. This is still very romance driven; it’s an office romance, he owns the company she’s working under, so there’s some tension there.

I WILL SAY… the perfume plot was A LOT. Like almost the entire story which I understand is the driving point, but also I would have appreciated… a little more romance, a little less perfume? IDK.

There was also a point where they spent a ton of time trying to resist each other without any other good reason than being business partners that when they actually finally got each other, it felt like there was a huge JUMP in their relationship. Like they went from resisting each other to being like “oh ur mine only i own you now” kinda thing aaaaaandddd I would have appreciated a buffer period in between. It seemed very 0 to 100.

But overall, I really liked it! The ending was especially sweet for me.

Stella Bardot lives in New York and has put her heart and soul, and invested everything she has into her business for the last five years. She could definitely use a night out, so when she becomes in possession of an invitation to a fancy wedding at a prime location, she goes against her better judgement and decides to go. It's addressed to her ex-roommate who owes her money and did her wrong. She can't resist a chance to get all glammed up, and have some fun. While crashing the wedding she meets a sinfully sexy stranger. She knows it's bad timing, but his smile leaves her breathless. They dance, and their chemistry is off the charts. He's impossible to resist, but when her true identity is revealed she has a Cinderella moment, and makes a quick exit. When they come face to face again and things turn complicated will she take a chance on love and finally get her happily ever after?

The Invitation by Vi Keeland is a sexy, sweet standalone romance about family, fate, intense connections and explosive chemistry. I loved this heroine so much. She's quirky, strong, and has a beautiful heart. Then there's Hudson. The man is swoony to the extreme, and absolutely gorgeous! I really enjoyed this book. It's flirty, fun, and packed with angst, emotion, and hilarious banter. This story will captivate you throughout. I couldn't put it down! It's easily one of my favorites by this author, and will definitely be in my top reads of 2021!

There was a moment at around the halfway point of this book where I sat back and realized - ohhhh sh*t!!! This is going to hurt.

Like, I was afraid to keep reading because I knew that no matter what, I was not coming out of this without a bruised heart.

And - I was right.

But it was so worth it!

This is the magic of a Vi Keeland book. It's so effortlessly and compulsively readable. It feels light, and sexy and swoony and decadent. So when the rug is inevitably pulled out from under you, you're already too far gone to save your heart from the punches you know are about to rain down on it. You're already all-in, completely in love, and hopelessly devoted to these fantastic characters.

And ohmygosh. Was I ever all-in, completely in love, and hopelessly devoted to these fantastic characters. They are everything. The banter was sexy and flirty and fun. The emotional connection was heartfelt and adorable. The physical chemistry was off the charts. I was enchanted by Stella and Hudson's love story, intoxicated by their chemistry, and frankly, I'm still catching my breath from all the ways this book hit my heart.

What an amazing story.

I loved every single minute. This is absolutely a 2021 MUST READ - so do not hesitate. GO READ THIS BOOK! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

What would you do if your former roommate stiffed you on two months rent, stole your favorite shoes, and left in the middle of the night with no notice? Would you lie and pretend you’re the former roommate and RSVP “yes, plus one” to a swanky wedding happening in one of your most favorite locations in the city?

Welp, if you’re Stella Bardot, that’s exactly what you do—and it just goes on a crazy rollercoaster ride from there!

From the very start of The Invitation I was totally sucked in to Stella and Hudson’s world. I had no idea where their story would take me—no idea that this crazy, silly start to their romance would lead me through some ridiculously fun, sexy, snarky banter. And then twist and turn me through some poignant, sweet, smart, emotional moments that were completely unexpected.

And I guess that’s a perfect word for The Invitation: unexpected. And easily one of my 2021 favorites. ~ Missy, 5 stars

It looks like Vi Keeland is becoming a go to author for me. I know there are complaints saying her stories are so similar, but The Invitaiton was exactly what I was looking for.

The heroine, Stella, was very quirky and easy to love. She was also smart and determined to fight for her dream. At first, I wasn’t sure about Hudson, then he was everything and so swoon worthy. I loved Stella and Hudson together, especially the way he always complimented her when she needed a little push. They were both hurt before, so it was slow going for them.

I have one minor complaint, and it’s not about the story. Last week I was scrolling through my home feed, and someone (not a friend) had a 2 sentence update that was a major spoiler. It gave away a major plot twist of the story, and I couldn’t stop thinking about while reading. Besides all that, I did enjoy the story.

The audiobook is narrated by my girl crush, Andi Arndt and the sexy Sebastian York sigh.

HUDSON!!!

I was kind of expecting this to be a mediocre book. I didn't have high expectations since I haven't been that interested in her latest books. But I was really surprised when I couldn't stop reading it.

I think we all know by this point some of Vi Keeland's go-to subplots. And not gonna lie, one of those plots was used here but in a very small capacity and by that time I already liked the book.

I really loved Stella's personality. It was really unique and I had a fun time reading her POV. Her hobbies were so amazing and interesting to the point that I kind of want to try one of them. I loved how she didn't give up on her idea and stood her ground.

Hudson was kind of an asshole in the begining but he transitioned to being a gentleman very smoothly. I didn't even notice when I started liking him.

Also, there's an amazing slow burn in the story which I really enjoyed. The side characters were also amazing and added different things to the story.

All in all, this was a nice surprise and one of my favourites from Vi Keeland. I really had a fun time reading this.

It’s very well written, but the same old story. It’s cute.

Last year I had learned of The Invitation by Vi Keeland. I read the blurb, was intrigued and did a placeholder to have it ready for when it came out. Well, when Bibi posted her review for this raving how much she loved it, that was it...I had to click, click and get it in my hot little hands.

Best action I did that day. From the first paragraph to the last, I was in love with this book.
It had strong, clear characters. They were unique to them. Each strong and willing to go to the wall for what they believed in. This strength was consistant throughout the story.

Was the story perfect, perfect...well, almost. It had interesting plot points, a little different than the usual. The chemistry was off the charts for both and when they connected it was ON.

It also had HEART...loads of it. A thread of how to overcome difficult things and how life overall works out the way is should if we let it. Life Lessons for sure.

Go and read this the way I did, with very little knowledge...only the blurb. Trust me, this was fun, sexy, smart and strong. Just the right tone for the times we are in.

Reads more like a teen story of fawning over someone while accepting their abusive actions.

Spoilers ahead, 2.5* rounded up only because of the latter half of the book

The h crashes an expensive wedding with her best friend using her former roommates invite, she meets a gorgeous guy there and gives him her fake name....unfortunately he turns out to be the brother of the bride and puts her on the spot for her deceit. She manages to brazen it out and dashes into the night like Cinderella, but just like Cinderella she left something important behind......not a glass slipper but her cellphone.
The H is the head if a venture capitalist firm,he's pissed at the h's deception but is drawn to her. Using her cellphone as a lure he organizes a second meet up and asks her out. Misunderstandings and shocking secrets create a bumpy road to their HEA.

**********
1) I liked the premise, a bit of modern day Cinderella and of course the predictable but nevertheless unique way the latter parts of the plot played out.

2)The careers of the mcs were very well described, the steps to getting her business launched seemed very realistic

3)Unfortunately I was bored to death at the lack of romantic development, while her business launch was interesting I read for the romance and NOTHING happened! As a matter of fact the H was a douche because of a simple misunderstanding

4)When the relationship FINALLY progressed it was much better

5)Given the hints it was clear what the end result would've been but it was still shocking somehow. My heart broke for the H and I really wanted his ex and his friend to pay.

6) Unfortunately the situation was resolved in an adult manner 😂

7) I loved the h's best friend as cliched as he may have been

I think this is probably the second book I've actually completed by this author, for some reason her writing style and I do not mesh. However had things flowed better in the first 60% ? I'd have rated this higher

No cheating
H gave off manwhore vibes(to Me) but hadn't been with anyone in a couple months
H is a divorced father of one. We don't "meet" his ex but her actions have heavy repercussions
h's ex cheated on her
h went on a couple dates with OM but nothing happened
H seemed not to have had sex with anyone else since meeting h

Stella Bardot and Hudson Rothschild caught each other’s eyes at a swanky wedding. But their promising beginning might not go anywhere when it turned out one of them was not who they made themself to be.

One thing I notice about the author’s writing is that she has a knack for writing a fresh and fun couple’s first meeting scenes. This book certainly proved it. In fact, even though a certain aspect of the story was predictable, the whole story was fun and refreshing.

So I pushed my entire face into her wet pussy, using my nose, cheeks, jaw, teeth, and tongue. And while I was in there, I stopped to take a deep inhale. Later, I’d have to remember to see if Stella could develop this as one of her custom freaking scents—for my private collection only.

I loved both of the characters and their background stories. Hudson was a hardass with a soft edge. Stella was amusing with her abnormal olfactory receptors and her thing with diaries. I also loved how diaries played an important role in the story.

The Invitation is a story of taking chances in love and life. It would appeal to readers looking for a fun, easy read with a spritz of heart.

Vi Keeland is like my auto buy author. I read her books without even reading the blurb cuz she is absolutely amazing and this book was no different.

I didn't even read the blurb cuz damn that cover was enticing enough for me 🔥🔥 and i had so much fun reading this book.

Stella and Hudson were so sweet. My heart went all pitter patter for them. The story was such a ride.

This book is my second favorite vi Keeland book to date. The first will always be Stuck up suit.
