I thought the same thing when i got mine, i think i played with for a couple hours before I figured it out! I'm going to attach a diagram and try to explain it!
If you hold on to the part i've colored blue and yank REALLY hard on the piece that i've colored red it will move!! when you let go it will go back down but it should now move a little easier so when you've got the upper cable hooked on the red piece and you pull up you should be able to get it hooked!! I hope this helps, as i see many many people saying they had problems with this but none of them said how they got it!

tricky but read the instructions when u connect upright pull on the cables they will pull up with some tension but dont worry it will go on !!

Since this question was posted 11 months ago I hop you have figured it out already, but it is just a matter of using a little power to pull the two pieces together. I struggled with it for a bit but managed to get them to wedge togther with a little extra effort.

I struggled with that too. The top tension just hooks into the botton tension. It does not actually "fit" in line like you would think it would. There's a little loop on the lower tension and you put the little round part of the upper tension into the loop and that's it.

This happened to me too, and I had to connect the little part into the swivels part. Then I pulled up on it really hard, but I had the tension knob dialed to 1, it was preset to 8. I thought it was broken when I tried to connect that part, but it's not, you just have to put the little metal part in, and pull up on it with a little force.

I had to wiggle it a little to get enough "slack'. It was the only part of the job that worked better with 2 people, but with some pulling and getting the 2 pieces close tegtether it worked. Make sure the resistance dial is down to 0 or 1.

My goodness!!! that was the only problem I found with it, it's extremely tight, I was about to give up myself, but I gave it a final try, put all my effort in it, and I got it! Now it works perfect (They should warn customers that they really need to put a lot of force in it to make it fit.

I had the same problem there is a small bolt or nut under the little spiral hook thing well if you loosen that the little hook will drop lower and then they will reach. you have to use an adjustable wrench or pliers. good luck

That was fairly easy after I pulled the tention cable up and hooked it into the slot. The diagram on page 7 is very good, look at it carefully. I had to look at it a minute before I got it. I assume 1 year and 3 months later you figured it out though. But maybe this will be helpful to someone else.

I had to pull on mine a bit to get it seated properly.

Leave the tension know on eight. Pull on the housing of the upper and lower cable and get them out where you can work on them. There is a nut below the bracket. I turned it down to the housing, and turned the bracket until I got enough cable out of the housing that I could connect the cable to the spring looking thing, then it slides through the slot and after that is done, you must tighten the cable again by turning the bracket the opposite direction to get the cable back down in the housing until it fits snug. Be sure to follow their instructions. Then the tension on your bike will work perfect. Some reviews complain the tension does not work properly and I believe it is because they put tension dial on one and pull so hard on the cable that it is stretched. I am 76 years old with deformed fingers because of arthritis and this was the easiest part of putting the bike together. I hope everyone can follow my instructions easily.

The first response is the only correct one. Thank you to this person. I did exactly as you describe and it all fit easily. If you pull on the tension cord to make it fit you will ruin the tension. Leave it set to 8. There&#39;s a reason its set to that number. The tension isn&#39;t the greatest overall on this little bike but if you follow these tightening instructions you will get the best tension you can. I&#39;m sure this is true for all these types of bikes. Great advice. The rest of the responses are wrong.

Make sure tension knob is on 8, this provides maximum slack (length) in top wire. 
Increasing length of entire cable (less tension on cable) actually moves magnet CLOSER to flywheel, thus increasing resistance!

what is the secret to attaching the lower tension cable #23 to the upper tension #20? I cannot do it. The cable doesn't seem long enough.

A very small battery comes with it. It is only used to operate the computer which monitors your speed, time, distance, calories etc.

The bike itself isn't but the monitor is. It takes 2 AAA batteries.

The digital readout gizmo on the handlebars take 2 doubleA or tripleAs, I can't recall, but they came with the machine. Otherwise, no plugging in or batteries to actually pedal the bike.

6 C batteries and thay only last a day. Check out your local Goodwill store for a very inexpensive adapter. If you buy them from Gold's they are $100.

The computer that gives distance, time, calories etc, is operated by 2 AAA batteries that come with the unit.

The computer uses 2 AAA batteries. You can use the bike without the computer if you want to.

In the owner's manual 100118 that came with my Marcy ME-708 bike (Dec 2010), it says the maximum weight capacity is 300 pounds. I don't know why these specifications are not shown on the web site, maybe they are different now.
