About

Almost four years after his first foray into unfamiliar concert territory with his highly-acclaimed Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, "Weird Al" Yankovic is pressing his luck again, this time with The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour. The tour marks Weird Al's long-anticipated return to the concert stage after his hugely successful Strings Attached Tour in 2019 where he performed each night alongside a full symphony orchestra.

Once again drawing from his back catalogue of 14 studio albums, Weird Al promises to deliver a different set list every night, with no two shows the same. As before, rather than focusing on the hits from his career, the show will feature Yankovic's non-parody material - the somewhat more obscure pastiches and original songs that have largely escaped the pop culture radar but are adored by his long-time fans. And like the last Vanity Tour, he is leaving behind the high-octane theatrics that he's known for and going bare-bones - no costumes, no props, no video screens… just Al and his band of almost four decades in smaller, more intimate venues, hanging out on stage, playing music.

"Weird Al" Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time. A five-time Grammy winner, his 2014 release Mandatory Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on Billboard's Top 200. He is one of only five artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades, the other four being Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2, and Kenny G. On August 27, 2018 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded Weird Al with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

    Dissapointing

by Tin on 4/4/23Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Second opener (Emo Philips) was so bad I don't understand why he was even there. I love dad jokes just as much, or more, as the next guy.. but his act was terrible. The sound in the theater and the overall acoustics weren't great, but not the worst I experienced. The lights on stage were horrible, they kept spinning and pointing at the audience at times and they were really blinding. My wife and I kept trying to block them whilst still trying to see the performance. Weird Al was great; nothing to say there (except maybe that a few more hit songs would have been nice).

Worst Concert I Have Ever Been To

by Aloha Joe on 3/30/23Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

The opening act was great and was the only worthwhile part of the show. Jim "Kimo" West played a number of Hawaiian inspired slack key guitar songs. The second act was Emo Phillips, a creepy looking, creepy sounding, and creepy acting commedian. I don't go to a concert to listen to a comic. Wierd Al did not play any of his hits. In fact he flat out said that he would not play any of his famous songs, but would only perform origional material from his latest album. The songs were hard rock, extremely loud, and with Al screaming the lyrics, impossible to understand. My partner and were looking forward to an evening of fun and laughs, but were extremely disappointed.

I wish I could love it

by A Random Yankovic Fan on 3/28/23Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I wanted to love this show. However, there were several reasons why I didn't enjoy it. 1. The music was too loud...so loud that I felt uncomfortable from my balcony seat and disoriented leaving the concert. I did not realize that Weird Al's original compositions were going to be performed as hard rock songs. I believe the sound guy needs to turn down the master volume as to not blow out people's eardrums. 2. Emo Philips was not funny for me; his humor is not my type. 3. The light show was not impressive. I could see how some people would enjoy stage lights shining in their eyes and that it could be a very entertaining gimmick. For me, it was annoying. Overall, loved that I could see Weird Al sing his songs and perform comedy in person. So 2 stars for that. But I really disliked the show immensely. You do you, but I don't plan on going to another Weird Al concert anytime soon.

    Everything I expected and more

by da_808haole on 3/28/23Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

This was indeed what was advertised and more. It was a nice sit down, shut up and listen type of concert. Did I know the songs, not all of them, but more than half. Thank you for breaking into the deep cuts. I will absolutely admit that it was a nice and very pleasant surprise to have Jim "Kimo" West bless us with four slack-key songs before Emo Philips did his part of the show. Having Jim "Kimo" West open with the four songs set the stage in one direction, then Emo Philips took the stage at what felt like 180 degrees the other direction. Almost as if to allow us, the audience, to be brought back to even keel. Even if the first Weird Al Concert in Hawaii was not a plethora of his hits, it was an amazing time and experience in my opinion and personal point of view. - Only draw back for me, not enough merch to choose from at the show.

The Fortunate Attendee of the Reasonably Great Comedy Artist

by MrGrimmace on 3/28/23Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Some people bought tickets to the show with the belief that “Weird Al” Yankovic would be performing all his greatest parody songs, but that’s not what the tour is all about. As Weird Al put it, “It’ll be filled with my not so popular songs.” But that’s a matter of perspective because, in my mind, there are no unpopular songs from Weird Al Yankovic. The show opened with Weird Al’s guitarist, Jim “Kimo” West, playing a few solo slack key songs that’s popular with Hawaii residents, and the last song was accompanied with a hula dance by…OMG, I forgot her name, I’m so sorry. But anyways, everyone loved it. Special guest comedian Emo Phillips came up next; his first performance in Hawaii since 1995. He was such a delight to see perform standup and got the entire audience laughing. I hope Emo Phillips comes back very soon. And then the man of the hour…Weird Al Yankovic, accompanied with band mates: on guitar, Jim “Kimo” West; on drums, Jon “Bermuda” Schwartz; on keyboard, Rubén Valtierra. The only person missing was bassist Steve Jay who had a medical emergency the day of the show, so Weird Al had Steve’s son Miles fly in from LA to Honolulu and arrived an hour before the show. They played a number of songs to the delight of the crowd for a little over 2 hours. Since I had bought a VIP package, among the souvenirs I got were: a VIP pass tour lanyard, Al’s brand of Jackson Park Espresso medium roast coffee and coffee can, a Weird Al coffee mug, photo op with Weird Al, and a signed tour poster (which can be substituted for one personal item). Overall, this was a dream come true. I’ve been a fan of Weird Al since 1988 and one of my goals on my bucket list was to see him perform live. Now that goal has been achieved. Mahalo, Weird Al, Emo Phillips and the entire band for making this one of my most memorable nights.

    So-so

by Fan in Hawaii on 3/28/23Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I loved Emo Phillips. I also loved the guitar player Kimo’s opening set. I also really liked Al’s performance and the talent of the band. However, the new work all sounds the same. There were some different styles - lounge singer type. But most was just head-banger. The songs are clever. But I felt like I was hearing the same song over and over again with different lyrics, much of which I couldn’t understand.

Great concert! Bravo Al; you rock!

by RandyM on 3/28/23Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I've been a big fan of Weird Al since his early days on Dr. Demento thru UHF (1989) and his TV show (1997) too. His brilliant and incisive humor comes thru loud and clear in his songs and his musical chops have earned him his share of Grammys. But seeing him in person is truly special and NOT to be missed! I'd go again in a heartbeat. Definitely recommend! Go see him! 5 stars! (My only regret is not getting an aloha shirt while I was there. I didn't realize until too late that it had his face as part of the pattern)

Still entertaining, but not what I expected.

by Steven808 on 3/28/23Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

This was Weird Al's first time performing in Hawaii, so it was a must to attend. It was only after buying the tickets that I learned that he would not be performing parody songs, like "Eat it", "Like a Surgeon", "White and Nerdy", but his original songs. I'm sorry Al, you did not become famous for your songs. You became famous for the parody you did of other songs. Still, it was a fun night, and I can check off seeing Weird Al live off my list. I don't know if I'd go again unless I knew he was doing parody songs. Song that made him famous.

    A unique experience

by Joshua on 2/13/23Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Unlike his normal shows, there were no costume changes or huge set-up. It was just him and the band sitting on stools performing original songs (non parody). I saw this type of concert back in 2018, and I was hoping for another sometime down the road. I participated in Weird Al Jeopardy (Exclusive to VIPs). Truly an awesome experience.
