Jazz guitarist Julian Lage began wowing crowds at the tender age of six, and he was already a master bandleader by the time he made his solo debut at age 21 with 2009's acclaimed Sounding Point. As his skill has continued to grow, he's floored countless audiences with the fluid melodies, dizzying runs, and gorgeous harmonies of originals like "Relaxin'" and reimagined standards like "Nocturne." His prowess across the neck allows him to seamlessly weave his backing parts and melodies together, all while his skilled rhythm section colors his brilliant fretwork with cymbal splashes and bass walks. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Julian Lage became fascinated with the guitar at the age of four after watching his father take lessons in their native Santa Rosa, CA. His parents gave him his first ax for his fifth birthday, and his father demonstrated a few basic scales to get him started. A year later he was performing in public and invited to sit in with the likes of Carlos Santana, Pat Metheny, and Martin Taylor among others. He grew from prodigy to virtuoso at the Berklee College of Music – the most prestigious music college in the US – before graduating in 2008. He made his debut as a band leader the following year with the album Sounding Point, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. He spent the next few years touring and recording with contemporaries like Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge, and Fred Hersch. Lage premiered a new trio featuring Scott Colley (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums) on his 2016 album Arclight, which again dazzled listeners and critics alike. Julian Lage continues to impress fans with his impeccably polished albums and sublime live performances, which are a joy for audience and performer alike.
