About

JULIAN LAGE IN CONCERT:

Jazz guitarist Julian Lage began wowing crowds at the tender age of six, and he was already a master bandleader by the time he made his solo debut at age 21 with 2009's acclaimed Sounding Point. As his skill has continued to grow, he's floored countless audiences with the fluid melodies, dizzying runs, and gorgeous harmonies of originals like "Relaxin'" and reimagined standards like "Nocturne." His prowess across the neck allows him to seamlessly weave his backing parts and melodies together, all while his skilled rhythm section colors his brilliant fretwork with cymbal splashes and bass walks. Julian Lage loves to share his gift with ticket buyers, and his stunning six string finesse always puts a smile on everyone's face – including his own.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Julian Lage became fascinated with the guitar at the age of four after watching his father take lessons in their native Santa Rosa, CA. His parents gave him his first ax for his fifth birthday, and his father demonstrated a few basic scales to get him started. A year later he was performing in public and invited to sit in with the likes of Carlos Santana, Pat Metheny, and Martin Taylor among others. He grew from prodigy to virtuoso at the Berklee College of Music – the most prestigious music college in the US – before graduating in 2008. He made his debut as a band leader the following year with the album Sounding Point, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. He spent the next few years touring and recording with contemporaries like Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge, and Fred Hersch. Lage premiered a new trio featuring Scott Colley (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums) on his 2016 album Arclight, which again dazzled listeners and critics alike. Julian Lage continues to impress fans with his impeccably polished albums and sublime live performances, which are a joy for audience and performer alike.

The new songs were a disappointment

by Bill M on 4/3/24Lincoln Theatre - Washington

His technical expertise is unmatched, as are the lyrical compositions he’s known for. But Lage’s new songs are not engaging and seem disjointed - the pieces don’t flow together coherently. It sounded … choppy. For instance, it seemed odd that the long opener featured a long bass solo - something more typically reserved for later. It’s like it was pasted into the song, not seeming to flow from the preceding passage. He and the rest of the band are technically proficient. But the songs largely left three of our party cold. Note that we love his work on the recent CD and bonus cd. And one of us plays bass.

    Rockin' with Sonic Trigonometry

by Gil on 3/29/24The Underground - Charlotte

Julian Lage is one of the most accomplished and exciting guitarists on the scene today and is currently touring with an excellent band featuring his long time bass player, an excellent drummer and some dudes that were hanging out at the bus depot on keys and sax (just kidding). Some of his tunes remind me of the Bad Plus a little, but with guitar added. His music is exciting because you never really know what's going to happen next and somehow the band is playing these dissonant tones and unusual rhythms all together, even though some of the music sounds completely free and improvised. Just when your brain is saying 'I can't take anymore, please play a I chord or a Maj 7th, he will indulge you. Then it's back to that math class where you're in over your head, but you think 'maybe 2 + 2 does equal 5'. That's the key thing is that he is able to take you along and at some point give you an inverted Jazz Standard or a sideways country tune for musical comfort. It's not to be missed.

    jaw dropping virtousity

by OldOakhurst183 on 3/27/24Town Hall - New York

It was an amazing evening with one of the finest guitarists on the planet. Inventive, such a lyrical fluency that he so amazed, playing a majority of his hour and a half set with cuts from his most recent record, 'Speak to Me'. His use of a Telecaster playing jazz is listening to a beautiful aural experience. Levon Henry on sax was superb all night long, as was keyboardist Rob Burger. Kris Davis sat in on piano for a couple of numbers (South Mountain and 76). Jorge Roeder (b) and Rudy Royston are long time sidemen for Julian's journey. One should never miss seeing Julian should he be playing anywhere near. It's just that amazing a show.

Awesome playing by the band. The only drawback was the squeaky door to the lobby right next to our seats. Every time someone opened it - sqeeeeeeeeee!! Oil it please!!!!

Started with a great opener, who happens to be Julian’s wife & (sometimes) producer. Very impressive. Julian was spot on with a solid performance and a top shelf band. His demeanor is friendly & inclusive. Not to be missed!!

    Highest Caliber of Musician!

by Chris on 12/13/22Center Stage Theater - Atlanta

Julian's musicianship is among the highest caliber. His skills on the guitar, once again, are of the highest quality. While listening to recordings or videos of him playing are impressive, attending a live concert to see this eminently skilled musician/guitarist is something very special. The way he communicates thru music on emotional, intellectual or technical level is incredible and something that must be experienced live, in person.
