Gaudea, which is illuminated by candle at night for extra romance, serves a Mexico meets the Mediterranean menu; dishes include whipped cheese with honey and pomegranate; crispy octopus with chipotle, corn and truffle butter; and baked fish with red sauce, refried beans and guacamole, along with ceviches and tiraditos. At breakfast, you can order a healthy series of smoothies, power shots and bowls consisting of shredded coconut, cacao nibs, fresh fruit and nut butters.

Planes
The international airport in Cancún is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the property. Hotel-arranged transfers start from US$200 one-way, increasing to US$230 if you’re feeling fabulous and in need of a stretch limo.
Automobiles
If you’re on a Riviera road trip, there’s free parking at the hotel. Depending on the weather, the road leading to the hotel may become muddy; we recommend hiring a car or calling a cab if you plan to explore beyond the hotel.
Worth getting out of bed for
There are daily happenings at Muaré Tulum, including a wholesome way to start your day (yoga class in the open-air shala at 9.30am) and sound-healing. The La Veleta locale means a perfect position for heading to the bright white beaches, mighty Mayan ruins and cenotes for subterranean swims. Also nearby is the Sian Ka'an reserve, one of the most diverse places on the planet. And you can continue on your wellbeing journey at the Mystika Museum, where you’ll be fully immersed in all kinds of wondrous woo-woo.
Local restaurants
Anyone with an undying love for the humble burrito will enjoy a trip to Burrito Amor, where they can order as many rice-stuffed rolls of corn as they like. Fillings get a little more creative than plain old carnitas – vegan options include cactus and Mayan spinach. Norita is where to head for tapas such as yellowfin tartare with wasabi emulsion, burrata with figs and toffee (technically honey-butter ponzu) tuna. At Sanará Kitchen, either on the beach or in Tulum town, the food is pure, delicious and quite often plant-based.
Local bars
You’re never far from free-flowing mezcal margaritas in Tulum and Nana Rooftop in the centre of town is an excellent place to start.

Tulum hotels may have a strict bohemian moodboard to follow (hey, if it ain’t broke…) and Muaré has followed instructions to the letter: breezy, billowy fabrics, hanging, woven things, thatched roofs, a lush jungly backdrop and not a primary colour in sight. It also has a hearty embrace of spirituality and shamanism, with rooms named after moons and stars. Each suite has a heated plunge pool in its own garden, as well as an exclusively neutral palette. The hotel is arranged around a snaking pool that could basically be a lagoon.
The boutique retreat is in the La Veleta part of town, close to everything a tourist could possibly want from a trip to Tulum (beaches, Mayan ruins, cenotes and laidback but brilliant restaurants and bars). Also theme parks, but let’s not talk about those. There’s yoga every morning in the open-air (and thatched, obviously) shala, a spa that would prefer to be known as a healing center and a restaurant overlooking the pool. We feel better just thinking about it.
