Neither my husband nor I have hearing issues but we could not follow the dialogue completely because the volume was low. We were in the fourth row of the first tier so can't imagine what it would have been like above us. On our way out we saw the hearing assistance devices which would have been nice. However, even if we had seen them on our way in, we wouldn't have thought we needed them. Otherwise, we enjoyed the play and thought the actors did a good job.
I did not know the story ahead of time but I was very disappointed in the performance. The acoustics were not good and it was difficult to understand the dialect of many of the actors.
The show was excellent, the one negative is at times it was difficult to hear/understand the dialogue. Especially when the background music was being played
Each sound on the stage was heard. And each noise created a mood. A setting for us to be lost in the experience of the characters. The story is simple, the tragedies relatable and the experience on stage was felt in each being on a seat. Transported through the rich melody of story line and soulful note of music. Brilliant!
Gammage auditorium is an iconic landmark that I attend regularly for decades. I’m not sure who’s responsible for the Sound system, Gammage or the show company. I’m not hard of hearing and neither are my friends that went, but none of us could hear more than maybe 50-75% and that would only be if listening intently and not moving. In addition, some of the actors would walk on the set and turn their back to the audience as they were speaking, which made it even more difficult because you couldn’t see their mouths. Not to mention why would they stand with their back to the audience anyway? The set never changed. There was an area rug…that was the entire set, the Actors walked around and added a couple of boxes to sit on every now and then. Very unprofessionally done, but the message was extremely profound. I would read the book instead. It was VASTLY much better.
I enjoyed the book when I read it a few years ago and thought this production did it justice. The actors brought the story to life and the authentic Afghan music accompaniment added so much to the production. I highly recommend seeing this play.
This is one of the best Plays I have seen in a while. The storyline is great. Emotions are raw and displayed fantastically throughout. Engaging from beginning to end.
The story is magnificent. The actors were very good. The kites were ok, nothing spectacular. The actors were difficult to hear and understand at times
Enjoyed the story but sound quality was bad. Often unable to make out what was being said.
