Overview of Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp

With only nine en suite tents and set within a 25 000-hectare private concession in the western Okavango Delta on the border of Moremi Game Reserve, Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp offers you a deluxe entry into one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. At Nxabega – which means ‘place of the giraffe’ – you could happen on grazing lechwe, aquatic antelope uniquely adapted to their water world, or rare and shy sitatunga. Birders might get one of the ultimate ‘big ticks’: an amber-winged Pel’s fishing owl that swoops over the Delta by night.

A classic Okavango excursion is a tranquil mokoro or canoe trail through the reeds where you will be up close to pale pink lilies, miniscule frogs and jewel-like kingfishers. Of course, the Delta is also home to bigger game: expect elephant, buffalo, lion and – if your luck is in – a gorgeous tree-climbing leopard. Enjoy motor-boating excursions during the day while sunset cruises and mekoro rides to picturesque viewing spots round out the afternoon before dinner.

Nxabega’s very roomy tents are strung under black-wooded ebony trees and anchored by a luxurious dining and living area with views onto the water. Because the concession is unfenced, diners can sometimes enjoy views of passing elephant families, the matriarchs gently keeping their little ones in line and guiding them through the glistening water.

Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp is about a 20-minute light aircraft flight from Maun. Your ranger will welcome you at the airstrip for a 20-minute drive to the lodge, depending, of course, on what sightings you have along the way!

    Tent

As there are only nine tents at Nxabega, and they are each placed 20 metres / 65 feet apart, you have both comfort and privacy. Each tent is situated on a raised teak platform and includes a private balcony with a wooden swing seat that is perfect for morning coffee. The en suite bathrooms feature a flush toilet, large indoor and outdoor showers and a well-lit double vanity. The tents balance practical elements – fans, safes and hairdryers – with the romantic – mottled cowhide rugs, hand-hewn furniture and softly glowing lanterns.
They have been specially designed with a double layer of canvas and netted walls that retain cool air and allow it to circulate as a natural and eco-friendly form of temperature control.

    General Facilities

Despite its paradisiacal position, Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp has top-notch facilities, including Wi-Fi access in the common area, a laundry service, gift shop for mementos and sundries, and a swimming pool ringed by comfortable loungers on which it is virtually impossible not to have a soothing afternoon siesta.

Helicopter transfers can be arranged on advance request. Massage treatments using Africology products are available in your room.

We loved every bit of our stay. Our guides were outstanding, we loved the canoe trip, sunset drinks on the shore, the safari drives and the knowledge of our guide and spotter, the boat trip, morning and afternoon teas in the wild, the attention of our own butler, the food, the rooms, the personal attention of the young managers and the way every need was accommodated and met with minimum fuss. The wildlife was not profuse but we saw a leopard, elephants, a lion, zebras, buffalo, antelope, wildebeest, giraffes, hyenas, hippos and colorful birds. Overall every minute of our stay was wonderful and the flight to Maun via another lodge was panoramic and overall Nxabega very best way to finish up an incredible 18 days.

The Nxabega camp was very luxurious, in fact I would not call it a camp as it was as good as a five star hotel. Again, the food, service and general amenities were top of the range. In all three of these, the guides were first class and went to considerable trouble to find animals and to provide all our needs and requests. Indeed, I found that all staff in the three locations were extremely friendly and helpful and made us feel “at home”. I did like the complete upfront payment covering all food, alcahol and clothes washing, it really made us feel cared for.

We had a fabulous time and it was an amazing experience for my mother in law for her first safari. Both the lodges were lovely and made us feel so welcome with a nice touch from the Savuti Safari Lodge giving us a bottle of bubbly for our anniversary and the food expecially at Nxabega was absolutely delicious.
