In 1983, David Hohnen tasted his first Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Just two years later, in 1985, he founded Cloudy Bay and brought New Zealand wine to the world.

The Cloudy Bay legacy began with Sauvignon Blanc, an iconic New Zealand wine from its first vintage. It put New Zealand on the world wine map, forever changing the perception of ‘new world’ wines and Sauvignon Blanc as a variety.

Today our Sauvignon Blanc comes from vines in three Wairau Valley sub-regions: Rapaura, Renwick and Brancott Valley. The coarse, free-draining gravelly soils and the valley’s climate come together in harmony to create the perfect conditions for Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The resulting wines are pure, vibrant and full of concentrated stone fruit, citrus and subtle tropical characters.

Our home vineyards in Marlborough also produce superb Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and we are proud to showcase Marlborough’s pedigree as a wine region.

Our Pinot Noir comes from three distinct vineyards in the Southern Valleys: Barracks, Mustang and Delta. The clay soils of the Southern Valleys are cooler and hold more water than those of the gravelly Wairau Valley, and sloped sites give longer exposure to the sun. The three unique terroir are combined to make elegant, complex and fine-boned Pinot Noir.

Cloudy Bay’s approach to Chardonnay is all about balance and harmony. Vineyards planted in the stony soils of Wairau Valley and the dense clay of the Southern Valleys work together to create a wine that marries ripe stone fruit and citrusy elegance.

Cloudy Bay endeavours to explore new frontiers. Pelorus méthode traditionnelle helped to cement New Zealand’s reputation for fine sparkling wine. Te Koko, a barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc, launched in 2000 and changed how the world saw the region’s signature grape variety.

In 2009 we embarked on a new adventure. As with Sauvignon Blanc and Te Koko, the vision was to capture a darker, more brooding style of Pinot Noir. Cloudy Bay’s winemakers explored for years before finding the perfect place: Central Otago. The 2014 Te Wahi appeared in 2016, Cloudy Bay’s expression of Central Otago Pinot Noir. Te Wahi means ‘the place’ in te reo Māori, reflecting both the importance of terroir and the sense Cloudy Bay had found its second home.

At Cloudy Bay, our goal is to connect people to the land through each glass of wine, no matter where they are in the world. We aim to let New Zealand’s natural wonder speak through every sip. Each wine evokes New Zealand’s signature simple luxury, like enjoying fresh-caught seafood at sunset in a breathtaking bay. Cloudy Bay wines are the pure taste of our home, an expression of our appreciation, admiration and respect for the land.
