Flight attendant turned New York Times bestselling author T. J. Newman—whose first book Falling was an instant #1 national bestseller and the biggest thriller debut of 2021—returns for her second book, an edge-of-your-seat thriller about a commercial jetliner that crashes into the ocean, and sinks to the bottom with passengers trapped inside, and the extraordinary rescue operation to save them.

Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Those still alive are forced to close the doors—but it’s too late. The plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers trapped inside.

More than two hundred feet below the surface, engineer Will Kent and his eleven-year-old daughter Shannon are waist-deep in water and fighting for their lives.

Their only chance at survival is an elite rescue team on the surface led by professional diver Chris Kent—Shannon’s mother and Will’s soon-to-be ex-wife—who must work together with Will to find a way to save their daughter and rescue the passengers from the sealed airplane, which is now teetering on the edge of an undersea cliff.

There’s not much time.

There’s even less air.

With devastating emotional power and heart-stopping suspense, Drowning is an unforgettable thriller about a family’s desperate fight to save themselves and the people trapped with them—against impossible odds.

I’ve heard that this book will be made into a movie, and I definitely understand why. The premise is perfect for the screen: Likable characters, being trapped inside an airplane under water and the nearly impossible task of getting the passengers out of there.

For the most part I loved the book. The only thing that made it less perfect for ME was all the tech stuff, which left my mind wandering and frankly made me feel a bit stupid. When I looked past that however, there was so much going on that I still thought about what would happen next when I couldn’t read. It was also emotional, especially segments dedicated to Will and his daughter. There were moments when the characters realized what is important, and you just felt for them in their predicament. I also liked how capable and intelligent Will was. It was obvious that he would stop at nothing to save his little girl. Her mother also has a central role, and her ingenuity was impressive.

The last chapters were intense. So much was going on, and the author even tightened the suspense by a storm that also made the conditions on land challenging. At some points I wanted to pray, and I was tense from all the anticipation. I could almost not stomach the intensity of it all.

Overall an enjoyable thriller that will satisfy the reader!

YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO PUT THIS DOWN-SO PLAN ON READING IT IN ONE SITTING!!

The emergency landing of an aircraft on water is referred to as a “ditching”.

And, when Coastal flight 1421 departed Honolulu for San Francisco, and lost an engine, that is exactly what the aircraft had to do.

Flames were shooting out of the engine, part of the wing was shredded and systems and back up systems had failed, making it impossible for the pilots to return to Honolulu or reach an alternate airport.

Although an evacuation is initiated, it cannot be completed, and twelve passengers inside the aircraft are forced to detach the slide/raft and close the aircraft door, hoping that they can survive inside until they are rescued, but then the aircraft begins to sink.

16 MINUTES AFTER IMPACT-6.5 HOURS of OXYGEN LEFT IN THE PLANE

Those trapped two hundred feet below the surface in the damaged Airbus:
One of the pilots: Kit
Two of the four flight attendants: Kaholo and Molly
Maia-an unaccompanied minor
Ira and Ruth-an elderly couple celebrating an anniversary
Bernadette-a nurse
Jasmine-a woman donning an inflated life vest
Ryan, a newlywed who is now a widow
Will Kent and his daughter, Shannon
and of course, Andy-the passenger who has been an a**hole since he boarded the flight

There is no precedent for an event like this-though there are ways to rescue those trapped in submarines, but time is of the essence, as the sealed aircraft begins teetering like a see-saw on the edge of an underwater cliff.

TIME IS DWINDLING DOWN

OXYGEN IS RUNNING OUT

Their only chance of survival is an elite rescue team, led by a professional diver and underwater welder, Chris Kent, who happens to be Shannon’s mom, and Will’s soon to be “ex-wife”.

No doubt this will end up being my favorite ADRENALINE THRILLER of the year, as the action begins on page one and it DOESN’T let up. The tension is PALPABLE and the only time I set my Kindle aside is when the tears welled up in my eyes and the words were blurring!

I DARE YOU NOT TO CRY!

T.J. Newman’s first book, “Falling” will soon be a major motion picture and I can see why there is already a bidding war to make “Drowning” into a movie, as well! 🍿

Thank you NetGalley and Avid Reader Press/Simon & Schuster for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.

WOW!! MIND BLOWN!! PHENOMENAL!! Drowning is an extremely INTENSE suspense/thriller that will grab a hold of you and not let you go! I am talking about full on adrenaline rush and being on the edge of your seat the entire time! Once I started reading I couldn't stop because I had to know what was going to happen next. You ever think that things can't get worse and the next thing you know it does!?! AHHH!! By the end of this rollercoaster of a ride, I was exhausted emotionally and physically. This book is easily one of my favorite reads this year!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Six minutes after take off Flight 1421 it crashes into the ocean. While evacuating an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. The remaining people on the plane are forced to close the doors and the plane begins to sink! Will the twelve people trapped inside be rescued or will they die? They are on borrowed time with every minute that passes due to running out of air!

Is this story just about a plane crash? No, its so much more! The story is about love, hope, loss, second chances and the lengths a parent will go to for their child. The author has a way of making you feel so connected to the characters that you feel like your right there with them. This is my first read by Newman but it will not be my last! I highly recommend this book and it deserves a million stars!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is receiving high praise amongst reviewers with a 4.43 Goodreads rating and 1,000 (so far) 4 and 5 star reviews. It's safe to say this author succeeded in entertaining a wide and varied audience which is not easy to do so kudos for that. 👏

Now there appears to be a small number of people that found this underwhelming. They stand at 26 people at the moment and my cranky ass is about to make that 27.

This book is fast paced, I'll give it that, but is it because I skipped page after page of technical jargon? Probably. I'll give the author credit that she's a smart cookie that did her research but it did not make this a riveting reading experience. It bogged this down so much that I was drowning in tears of boredom. Skim, skim, skim.

There was little to no character development. Here's what I know about them:

Ira and Ruth - The old couple
Bernadette - Nurse
Jasmine - Life vest woman
Andy - Blue polo asshole
Will - Smart guy
Shannon - Smart kid
Ryan - Newlywed widow
Maia - Unaccompanied minor
And the remaining crew - Kit, Kaholo, and Molly

That list above comes directly from the book as if the author knew we wouldn't give a hoot unless she threw us a little something to differentiate the characters.

Though we do take a closer look at Will and his family. He's about to be divorced from Shannon's mom, Chris, after a tragedy befell their family.

It's hard for me to care about characters without getting to know them so between the technical babble and the flat characters my enjoyment was sinking as fast as the plane in this book!

Then there was this and I quote:

"I thought you guys weren't going to fight today."

"We're not fighting, sweetheart," Chris said.

"Which is what you always say when you're fighting."

Chris and Will exchanged looks.

"Can I just save us the hassle?" Shannon said, standing on tippy-toes to grab a bowl from the shelf. "Dad, you don't want me to go on this trip because you're afraid. Afraid something will happen. Mom, you're frustrated because you think he's being selfish. Prioritizing his own feelings for my need to have a life. Dad, you'll be distant and somehow make it all about you. Mom, you won't really listen or even try to see his viewpoint."

Those are some astute observations from an 11 year old. This same 11 year old that eats a peanut butter cracker knowing she's allergic causing her to go into anaphylactic shock after the plane goes down. Cue the drama and the eye roll! 🙄

Not to mention how convenient our savior of the story is. Like, really? I'm not buying it for a second.

"So if you think I'm going to betray those families, or my own, and go sit in a hospital, waiting for some coast guard mouthpiece to finally tell me what happened....then you must not be a parent."

Say what?!?! I am a parent and this made me cringe. As if people without children couldn't possibly understand or care about the severity of the situation. What a crock of 💩!

So there you have it. My apologies to the legions of fans. This book was a bust. 2 stars!

This book had an impact on me as if I were watching a nonstop, heart-pounding, gripping action movie that made me jump out of my seat, bite my nails, scream at the characters on screen, squirm nervously, and finally find myself on the floor, closing my eyes to block the images that put me on the edge of a nervous breakdown! I am breathless now! T.J. Newman's newest twisty thriller leaves you feeling as exhausted as running a 10k marathon. You feel worn out after enduring the escalating pressure from the beginning. I read nearly 300 pages and, even though I tried to move from my seat to take a break for nature's call or to feed myself, I found myself silencing my husband who kept bickering because I forgot to turn off the oven and burned our dinner. The book is unputdownable, and I didn't want to stop reading!

Here's a summary of the main plot: Flight 1421 takes off from Honolulu, but six minutes later, it crashes into the ocean. You may think there's still a chance for survival as the pilots manage a water landing and safety checks get approval from the flight attendant. The survivors can exit from the doors, using their life vests as slides, but it's not that simple. The danger that awaits them outside may be much bigger than they expected! The plane is about to sink into the ocean, sitting on an unsafe shelf at almost 200 sea level. Can the survivors manage to stay alive without drowning in the middle of the ocean? What's going to happen to them? Do you want to find out immediately? Just order your copy, cancel your daily plans, prepare yourself to have an argument with your significant other (don't worry, the adrenaline pumping into your veins as you read this book is worth it), go blind, and enjoy the full ride!

The author's ability to balance action-packed sequences with emotional depth is commendable. Amidst the high-stakes situation, there are moments of vulnerability, introspection, and human connection that tug at your heartstrings. It's not just about the survival of the characters, but also about their resilience, determination, and the bonds they form in the face of adversity.

The writing is sharp, evocative, and immersive. I felt like I was right there with the characters, experiencing their fear, desperation, and hope. The pacing is relentless, never allowing for a dull moment, and the twists and turns kept me guessing until the very end. T.J. Newman knows how to keep readers on their toes, delivering surprises that leave you gasping for breath.

If you enjoyed the author's previous book, "Falling," you'll love this book even more! I guarantee it!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Avid Reader Press/Simon & Schuster for sharing this mind-blowing book's digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest opinions.

I read Falling by this author a couple of years ago and loved it. These books remind me of the disaster movies of the 70s (I know I am dating myself). This book particularly reminded me of The Poseidon Adventure (one of my favourites) crossed with Airport and I loved it.

This book was intense and had me stressed out. I was so anxious while reading it, I was actually holding my breath at parts. I was able to read it in a single sitting because I could not put the book down, it was that good. I was frantically flipping pages wanting and waiting anxiously to see what would happen next.

The human aspect and dialogue felt true to life and I liked that there were some mistakes made along the way of the rescue attempt. I call these types of books popcorn thrillers as they would make excellent movies. The book is completely captivating and entertaining. I love Newman's writing style because even though there are descriptive technical issues it's an easy read with clear explanations. I was emotionally invested in the characters' lives and their rescue, I cared what happened to them physically and in their relationships. Not all the characters are helpful or likeable and they don't all get along like one big happy family. They have issues with each other and they disagree and that made it all the more realistic.

I especially liked that the book isn't just about a plane crash rescue. Newman mixes the complexity of relationships with the human condition and does so brilliantly. If you're able to suspend belief a little bit, just sit back and enjoy the ride. Newman writes what she knows and does it well. All. The. Stars.

3.0 stars— I’ve seen numerous glowing reviews for “Drowning” by TJ Newman so I decided to give myself another reason not to fly and read it. The premise of the book is good as it begins by introducing the passengers of a doomed airplane before it begins experiencing mechanical problems and crashes into the ocean. The book then details both the struggle of those attempting to survive the crash’s aftermath and the rescuers attempting to craft a plan to rescue them. The book is non-stop action from start to finish and keeps you on the edge of your seat as long as you don’t think too hard about what is happening. Unfortunately for me, my dislike of this book is directed at the obnoxious main characters, Chris and Will, the married couple who control (and I do mean control) both the rescue operation and the actions of the passengers inside the plane. I know they are in the midst of a life or death struggle, but their attitude and arrogance about EVERY SITUATION drove me insane. I have worked and lived with control freaks who thing they are God’s gift to the world, and they look like Ghandi compared to these two. It is either their way or they are not cooperating or participating every..single..time. I don’t do well with books, movies, or life with arrogant control freaks and I didn’t do well with it here. It definitely tempered any enjoyment I got from reading and I wanted to make myself a character in the book so I could tell them to lose their attitude. BUT I digress. In the end it reminded me of “The Towering Inferno” or “The Posiedon Adventure” with a lot of over the top scenes and a very unrealistic heroic ending. So not the worst book out there but not even close to the best.

Holy Moly!! Buckle up for the harrowing ride on a jet that departs from Honolulu and crashes into the ocean. T.J. Newman hits it out of the park with Drowning. I felt out of breath as if I was stranded on the plane with the characters in the book.

One of the key characters is Will. He is traveling with his eleven-year-old daughter, Shannon. Her nickname is Jellybean. My daughter's name is Shannon and Jellybean is one of her nicknames.

Finding a solution with less than five hours to help pull survivors from the plane crash reminded me of the famous saying in the Apollo 13 movie, "Houston, we have a problem."

I listened to this on audiobook and the narration by Steven Weber and Laura Benanti is superb!

Highly, highly recommend!

Fast paced exciting read.

I really loved Newman's first book, Falling, and Drowning captivated me similarly from the beginning and didn't let me go until I finished.

This is like an action movie in book form! A few short minutes after takeoff from Honolulu, flight 1421 loses an engine to fire and all systems are non-operational. There is no option other than to ditch in the ocean between Molokai and Lanai. On board is Will, an oil rig engineer who is accompanying his 11 year old daughter Shannon to camp on the mainland. As soon as they begin to evacuate the plane after a water landing, jet fuel catches fire and twelve passengers and crew members decide to close the doors and the plane begins to sink underwater. After coming to rest, they have a compartment of air that Will calculates will last about six hours. Is rescue even possible?

This novel is so tense, and the pace is so quick and propulsive that I literally did not put it down until I was finished. The characters are very real, with heartaches and joys that make them so relatable that the reader is rooting for them to survive. There are a large number of very convenient coincidences, but in the overall scope of things, they don't really matter.

If you're looking for an engrossing, breath-holding, action-packed adventure then be sure to pick this one up as soon as possible! It's the perfect definition of a summer blockbuster read.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

What a fantastic way to open a thriller! I could not put this down and hang on to my seat so tight! I enjoyed this one more than her debut "Falling". Drowning doesn't have a melodramatic part and has interesting scifi techno-thriller vibes. The characters also have depth. No spoiler, no plot summary but if you enjoy aviation intense thrillers, disaster themes, or survival stories, don't miss this one!

I hope T.J. Newman will give us more good stuff like this again next summer. This is a fun and exciting thriller but also grim with real search and rescue going on right now for Titan Submersible and 5 crew at the Titanic wreckage site at the time of my reading. Towards the end of the novel, it was giving me anxiety.

If you’re looking for a pulse pounding, adrenaline fueled read this summer, this is the book for you!

Six minutes after take-off from Honolulu, a plane is forced to make an emergency water landing. Survivors begin to evacuate but catastrophic dangers await them outside. The 12 remaining passengers are forced to close the doors and await rescue, but the plane begins to sink and comes to rest 200 ft below the surface, teetering precariously on the edge of a cliff.

And this is simply the set-up.

As the trapped survivors struggle to stay alive, crews above water are in a race against time to accomplish the near-impossible task of bringing up the passengers before they run out of oxygen.

The characters and their histories added a personal element, and made this much more than a simple action story. Some of it might be bordering on schmaltzy but I admit to tearing up a time or two.

The last 25% was a white-knuckle roller-coaster ride to the end. It’s been a long, long while since I’ve read a book this tension-filled and I loved it. My only criticism was that the middle of the book suffered from technical jargon and details that sailed right over my head.

I wasn’t a fan of the author’s book, Falling, but this is one I recommend for a "popcorn" disaster nail-biter. It has already been optioned for film, and I'm not surprised.

A buddy read with Marialyce, be sure to check out her review!

*It was particularly poignant that we started this book when the massive multinational search and rescue mission for the Titan submersible was capturing the world’s attention. Sadly, that situation did not have a happy ending.

* I received a digital copy for review via NetGalley. All opinions are my own

the setup…
Minutes after Flight 1421 takes off in Hawaii, things go haywire with the pilots losing all systems and they prepare to crash in the ocean. The water landing was miraculous but while evacuating, an engine explodes, flooding the plane and starting a fiery scene outside. The twelve survivors remaining inside are forced to close the doors but the plane begins sinking. Okay, is this enough for you to want more?

the heart of the story…
True confession…I’ve watched every airplane disaster movie ever made so getting this was a no brainer. It’s my guilty pleasure. And, this doesn’t take much time before the excitement starts. The primary points of view are from Will Kent, an engineer who was accompanying his eleven-year old daughter Shannon to camp, and his wife Chris who is a professional diver currently working with the Navy on a salvage operation. There are others, including the pilot and the man heading the rescue mission but it’s Will and Chris who captivate the story. They are currently separated and both of them are smart, resourceful and fiercely love their daughter. Every decision Will makes inside that plane has Shannon’s survival in mind, as is the same with Chris as she forces herself onto the rescue team.

the narration…
Weber is one of my favorites and he seems to be ideal for these kinds of stories. He was perfect for Will’s voice as well as for other male passengers and crew. I also enjoyed Benanti, especially her interpretation of Chris. They made a great story outstanding.

the bottom line…
I loved Falling but am over the moon about this one. It’s literally nonstop action except for those transitions to the past where we learn more about Will and Chris Kent. It far surpassed my extremely high expectations. FYI, there was a fierce bidding war for the rights to bring this to screen and it hadn’t even been released! Don’t even bother to buckle up as there’s no way to avoid this story’s turbulence.

Drowning is a gripping and hard to put down tale of survival and rescue after a plane crashes into the ocean mere minutes after take-off. This book is intense from the very beginning as the plane loses power and goes down into the ocean. This scene is anxiety provoking and scary. The author taps into a fear that some travelers have - a plane crash.

The book tells the story of the pilot, crew, and several passengers on the plane. Will was traveling with his daughter, Shannon, when the plane went down. His estranged wife, Chris, is a diver who is attempting to save the survivors.

Whew! From the very beginning this book is action packed and tense. The only respite from the non-stop onslaught of tension is when the author takes readers back showing how a horrible loss fractured Will and Chris's relationship.

I enjoyed the show of courage, bravery, sacrifice, and support in this book. This tale of survival also shows triumph of the human spirit, courage, and teamwork.

This book was captivating and pulse pounding. Wowza, what a book! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, turning the pages, crossing my fingers, and feeling all kids of emotions.

4.5 stars

Okay, I'm definitely a minority in here🥲
But this book made my brain overwork!

SUMMARY:
Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. 99 passengers are inside the plane, but only 12 of them are lucky enough to survive after the plane hits the ocean. They need to stay together inside the plane in order to survive, waiting for the rescuer to come and save them. However, will all of the survivors remain alive until the end?.....

List of Survivors:
▪️Ira and Ruth (the old couple)
▪️Bernadette (nurse)
▪️Jasmine (life vest woman)
▪️Andy (blue polo guy)
▪️Will and Shannon (Father and daughter)
▪️Ryan (newlywed widow)
▪️Maia (unaccompanied minor)
▪️Kit, Kaholo, and Molly (The Crew)
👉IN TOTAL: 12 People

👁️ This story is told in third person

🕰️ There are Multiple Timelines in here (Present, 3 hours earlier (a little flashback about Will and Chris), one year later (as epilogue).

MY THOUGHTS:
📌 The premise is all I wanted; I do love aviation (especially airplane), and I'm a big fan of this kind of story, but the execution is the main and biggest problem here.

📌 There are a lot of aviation terms used in this book, so for people who aren't really into airplanes, you might find yourself a little bit confused while reading it.

📌 To be honest, the first 10% of this book was good; it successfully sucked me into the story. And I thought that would work for the whole page till the end, but NAH......🙁

📌 I can picture this book as a movie. It might be a BIG HIT as a movie, but as a book...BIG NO

📌 I haven't read the first book from this author, but as I saw the reviews from her previous work, 'Falling," I had the same feelings as them. So I thought the first book and the second book were quite alike; if you like the first book, you might like this one as well, but if you don't, then stay away from this one as well.

WHY IT DIDN'T WORK OUT FOR ME:
☠️ It was TOO INTENSE! While reading this book, I felt like I was in a crowded place where I couldn't even breathe. This intensity ruined everything! And made this book become TOO MUCH in every aspect.

Even right from the first page, it was already very intense and seemed to be in a hurry; it began with the engine starting to explode and everyone in panic. Usually, I like this kind of opening, but in this case, I would rather it begin at the airport. When they are about to take off or waiting for the plane....

☠️ My lousy brain couldn't keep up with the story; she refused to think and went blank instead!

So there are two situations here: the first is the survivors, and the second is the rescuer. Both sides are freakin intense and complicated! I found it hard to imagine both situations, which is why I said "It might be a BIG HIT as a movie, but as a book...BIG NO"

☠️ Now, because of those things I said before,
My brain couldn't keep up + The intensity kept building up up and up = At the end, it became such a mess for me!

☠️ It was boringable
AngelFA's Dictionary: Boringable is a situation where I find something boring, but it's still fine. And I can cope with it.

☠️ The more I read, the more I hate this book!
And the characters *DEEP SIGH* somehow I didn't like it either.

☠️ I'm waiting for the author's debut as a romance writer because some of the dialogue is chessy good enough for a romance book

WHERE THE BOOK COULD HAVE WORKED BETTER:
🔍 SEAT MAP, I wish there was a seat map. Though I know what the Airbus A321 looked like, still, if you provide a seat map/plane map, it's much better, isn't it?

🔍 Will and Chris
Somehow, I felt their love story was useless. I wish for something else🙃.

OVERALL:
This book is not to my liking, but trying to be general here and consider the other things, I think this book deserves at least 2 stars instead of 1 star.

This is a Dark Suspense, but I would not call this a mystery or thriller. There is no real twist, but there is suspense and build up. I really loved this book, and I did not want to put this book down. I also fell in love with all of these characters. I also do not want to fly again in my life. This book puts you on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end. The ending of this book was just so great. This is a must read book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Avid Reader Press / Simon Schuster) or author (T.J. Newman) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

4.5 pulse-pounding stars!

Intense. Claustrophobic. Tension-filled.

This was an unsettling, edge-of-your-seat adrenaline hit.

Six minutes after takeoff, commercial jetliner flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific ocean. During the open ocean evacuation, the engine explodes causing the plane to sink with twelve passengers stuck inside. An untested rescue mission starts in the hopes to save those trapped.

I picked this up at my library after seeing the countless raving reviews and it completely lived up to the hype. This is a book like no other! I was panic stricken from the first to last chapter, the high tension never letting up. The author creates an extreme initial shocking intensity that grabs you and doesn’t let you go until you’ve finished. This is a book that could easily be inhaled in one sitting.

There are multiple perspectives within each chapter. The author seamlessly shifts from one character to another without overlapping or causing repetition in the storyline. The perspective shifts were flawlessly executed and kept the narrative fresh and engrossing.

The atmosphere is palpable to the point of causing heart racing anxiety. I felt as though I was right there in the plane and on the ocean with these characters. No words were wasted - the writing was completely consuming. I am excited to get my hands on her previous book, Falling.

T. J. Newman has once again created a sensational thriller. While Falling covered trying to keep a plane safely in the air, Drowning covers a plane that crashes into the ocean minutes after takeoff. It sinks onto an ocean cliff with passengers still inside. The story is told from the perspectives of both those inside the plane and those outside trying to rescue them.
At the heart of the story are an estranged couple and their 11 year old daughter. Father and daughter are inside the plane, the mother, who is a commercial diver, is on a naval carrier doing routine maintenance when the crash occurs. Chris, the mother, is a force of nature and quickly became my hero. As with any thriller, I wasn’t expecting deep character development, but Newman gives us enough to get a real feel for the characters. And I will admit to shedding a few tears over the ending.
Newman definitely knows how to write suspense. This story is all about the action. Short, punchy chapters kept the pace at a breakneck speed. And while I can’t speak to the engineering side of things, the writing made it actually easy to envision how this would play out. It’s no wonder this book, just like its predecessor, has already had the movie rights sold.
My thanks to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for an advance copy of this book.

If you didn’t get the memo, don’t read this if you’re about to fly or while on a plane, especially if you’re a nervous flier. Yikes.

Drowning by TJ Newman is a book about one of the most unfathomable aviation disasters that our imaginative flight attendant-turned-author TJ Newman could conjure up in the most savage depths of her imagination.

This book is extra. Just when you think nothing more can go wrong, something else adds to the layer of deathly circumstances. It reads exactly like a classic Hollywood disaster movie. (No wonder it's getting made into one, congrats Warner Bros for winning the bidding war.)

What Newman did well here that made it better than your standard disaster thriller novel/movie trope is the layer of humanity and character development she crafts with the characters. Despite being plot-driven, Newman builds you up to care about the characters and gives us some effortless poignant moments. Maybe even a shed tear?

When I found myself skim-reading and glazing over, I realised it was due to the technical aviation jargon and some transfer skirt (uh?) terminology that an average layperson wouldn’t understand. I also caught a few moments where Newman made an artistic choice to tell in dialogue via an info dump rather than show.

Some people will think it’s a little bit too much for suspension of disbelief. But if you’re all for suspending it and embracing the disaster procedural thrills, you’ll enjoy it. I sure did.

My thanks to NetGalley, Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster and author T.J Newman for the opportunity to read this work, which was published on the 30th of May, 2023. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

3.5⭐️

Flight 1421 from Honolulu to California crashes into the Pacific on account of mechanical malfunction six minutes and thirty- seven seconds after it takes off. Of the 99 passengers on board most of the survivors are evacuated, but the waters prove to be equally dangerous. Twelve remain inside the plane as it sinks into the ocean to come to rest on an unstable cliff. Among the twelve are the copilot, two flight attendants, an elderly couple, an irate male passenger, a newly married man who lost his wife in the crash, an unaccompanied minor, a nurse, a young woman who is a bartender by profession and an engineer, Will Kent and his daughter, Shannon. As the narrative progresses we follow the twelve passengers trapped in the submerged airplane as the conditions worsen and they struggle to stay alive while the rescue operations led by a team of professional divers headed by Chris, Will’s soon-to-be ex-wife strive to reach them before its too late.

Drowning by T.J. Newman is a thrilling read. Intense and well-paced, the vivid setting, the tension and the heightened emotions make for an immersive read. It does get a tad too technical midway which does detract from the overall reading experience. The final 20% is unputdownable! While I did overall enjoy the story, it is evident that this book was written keeping in mind the possibility of an onscreen adaptation, which is something I would definitely watch, but doesn’t quite always make for smooth reading. I wasn’t a fan of the author’s debut novel and was wary of picking this one up. Overall, I did enjoy this one bit more!

I paired my reading with the audio narration by Steven Weber and Laura Benanti, who does a wonderful job of capturing the mood and tone of this thrilling read.

INTENSE,CHILLING, AMAZING that’s how I would describe Drowning by TJ Newman.
BUT to me this was more than just a plane disaster trope I was putting myself in the survivors place & how that had the guts to do what they did, I had empathy for those people it reminded me of the movie 🎥 Airport different scenario but Survival is they key.

Six minutes after taking off flight 1421 crashed into the Pacific Ocean , as they evacuate the engine on the plane explodes & the plane is flooded the passengers on board are forced to close the door but IS IT TOO LATE??
Water gushes in & they are in for the fight of their lives.

This was a chilling thriller that I could not put down it started from the first page to the last I had empathy for the characters & liked them all but the trope brings forgiveness, acceptance & hope all the chilling stars ⭐️.

4.5 Stars. T. J. Newman had ten years of experience as an airline attendant before writing the best seller Falling, a riveting airline thriller. With Drowning, she has proven that she can maintain the suspense and tension in this edge-of-your-seat, gripping, exciting airline story. With this propulsive, high-octane, explosive plot, she has carved her way to the top of the airline thriller category with plenty of human drama. She has done intensive research, interviewed airline technicians and search and rescue experts, and put this knowledge into a believable if farfetched story. I found some of the technical and mechanical aspects of airlines and search and rescue methods and equipment hard to visualize, but this didn't detract from my dread for the characters and anxiety about who, if any, can survive in an unprecedented, seemingly impossible rescue attempt.

The flight is only 6 minutes out of Honolulu en route to California when the engines and navigation equipment fail. The airliner, with 99 on board, crashes into the Pacific. It comes to rest on an unstable edge of an underwater cliff. Twelve people are still trapped inside the aircraft while it sinks two-hundred feet beneath the surface. An elite rescue team rushes to save any survivors. Many passengers and crew leave the plane, but most perish in the churning ocean or burn from spilled fuel, setting fire to waters surrounding the plane, despite brave rescue efforts.

The people trapped inside the plane must contend with water flooding its interior and rapidly diminishing oxygen supply. The water is waist-deep, and it is getting worse. Hypothermia is a threat. The rescue team is astounded to learn that people are still alive inside the plane. There has never been a rescue attempt of this kind. Several plans have been devised, but there is much disagreement about whether these ideas could work or worsen the situation.

Chris Kent Has joined the rescue crew. She runs a welding and diving business, mainly working on underwater repairs on large sea vessels. She strongly believes the plans drawn up by those in controlling rescue efforts will endanger the lives of the survivors. She is sure she has a better method for rescuing those trapped below, but her ideas are ignored. She learns to her horror that her soon-to-be ex-husband, Will Kent and their 11-year-old daughter Shannon are in the underwater plane. On the plane, the people are terrified but display an outer calm and a spirit of cooperation, except for one man who is rude and obnoxious. A memorable story that I hope I can forget before I board a plane.

Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the much-appreciated ARC of this action thriller. Publication date is set for May 30. Recommended.

Heads down, stay down

I couldn't find the right words to explain how I felt when I read the first few chapters. The way the story was written and how it unfolded made me feel more and more emotional. It's like there was a lump in my throat that kept getting bigger, and just when I thought I could finally breathe out, the story pulled me back in. The suspense in the book is incredible. Even though it's a fictional story and probably a bit far fetched, I really enjoyed reading this book!

This author's writing is sharp and the story is compelling and intense. T.J Newman’s ability to make the reader visualize every scene is a rare talent and one she hones to perfection.I was on the edge of my seat throughput the storyline. Being a former flight attendant.I sympathize with the crew and passengers and everyone involved with the rescue. T.J. Newman being a former flight attendant herself for Virgin America Airlines and her extensive research helped make the book that much more believable. I was hooked right from the beginning right up to the satisfying ending .The intensity is non-stop. So be prepared for a rollercoaster of a ride intensity and emotions.

Will Kent and his daughter, eleven-year-old Shannon, are on Flight 1421 heading to San Francisco from Honolulu. After only being airborne for less than two minutes the engine explodes, and they also lose all there hydraulics the plane was dead in the air. Captain Miller and his co-pilot Kit Callahan are left with the only option for ditch landing (make a landing in the ocean). As the passengers are ordered to evacuate the airplane chaos ensues. Most of the passengers evacuate, but three crew members and nine passengers including Will and his daughter are trapped on board as the plane sinks, 200ft. below sea level than abruptly comes to a stop balancing precariously on a rock bed.

The are many characters in the storyline. The main characters and secondary characters were well developed some you would want to befriend and some you’d loath as they handle this terrifying catastrophe in the air. That ends below the ocean. You cold feel their fear and anxiety it was palpable. As they try to find hope in the situation that they have onboard Will Kent that takes charge of the situation with Kit the acting captain with their combined knowledge they try to devise a plan that will help them get out alive

Will, as an engineer, knows just how dire the situation is. Shannon shows a strength of spirit that is rare in an eleven-year-old and puts some of the adults to shame.
They are trapped and they have to face what led them to this point and Will vows to fix his family, if he can get them out of this disaster.

On the surface, Coast Guard, Navy and a private contractor crew are working to find a way to save those trapped in the plane. Chris, is the owner of the civilian contractor company that does under water welding on navy ships and no one has more to lose than she does. As Will and Chris work together with the navy and coast guard to save the people trapped in the airplane, the coast guard have implemented two failed rescue attempts already that ended with tragedy, Engineer Will while calming his preteen daughter realizes the odds are against them but there is hope in the genius brain of his estranged wife Chris; if only those in charge would listen to her. Both Will and Chris realize that what happened to their family before the plane crash was tragic, but the real tragedy is that they let it destroy their family.

The brilliance of this story is in the creative interweaving of the lives of those hanging in the balance. We learn about the special love of elderly couple Ira and Ruth and background on the other passengers and crew.

The tragedy leading to the separation of Will and Chris Kent is gut wrenching but the fierceness to save their daughter and each other is a testament of their love and the pain that tried to break it. I believe it added depth to the storyline.

Flight 1421 out of Hawaii was only six minutes into the flight when one of the engines caught alight and they lost all ability to direct the aircraft anywhere. The vast ocean below them was where they would have to ditch - but rescue would be on its way immediately and the plane would float - wouldn't it?

Will and his eleven year old daughter Shannon were on the flight, along with around two hundred others. As most of the passengers escaped down the rescue ramp, Will could see what was happening and the suddenness of sealing the plane and its nosedive to the ocean floor terrified the twelve people left on board. Resting on the edge of a cliff, two hundred feet below the surface, around four hours of air left in the small area they were clustered in, the expert minds of coast guard, navy, and everyone who knew even the smallest amount, were above, working out how to save these people. Will's wife and Shannon's mother, Chris Kent, had a plan but would the experts allow her to follow through? The danger was intense, the fear visible on everyone's faces. Could Chris and her team rescue the survivors of the plane crash, including her daughter and husband?

I have never read a book which absolutely captivated me, involved me completely from the very first page, and Drowning has done it. Author T.J. Newman took hold of me and didn't let me go until the last page. A heartstopping, enthralling and adrenalin-filled psychological thriller, Drowning is highly recommended. And now I must look for the author's debut, Falling...

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

What Is Going on Between the Covers

Flight 1421 crashed into the Pacific Ocean six minutes after takeoff with engineer Will Kent and his daughter on board. He knows if he ditches the plane, his daughter won’t survive, so they stay in the plane and convinces ten others. The plane sinks, trapping them all in it. His wife, Chris, a professional diver currently working with the Navy, might be the only one who can save them, and the stakes and motivation are high for them: their daughter’s life.

My Two Cents

I loved the race against time element to the story that added to the high stakes danger that creates relentless tension and suspense, making it impossible to put the book down. While the pacing is fast at bottleneck speed, T.J. Newman balances the action with quieter moments that allow us to catch our breath while keeping us engaged in the characters’ plight. The complex dynamics of Will and Chris’s relationship and their determination to save their daughter drive the story forward while adding an emotional pull to the story. I was rooting and cheering them, and T.J. Newman doesn't hold back as the danger increased for everyone involved in the recuse, and I was holding my breath while gripping my Kindle.

While the story’s premise is thrilling with that relentless tension and delivers a compelling story of survival against impossible odds, there are times when the plot feels convenient with coincidences, and it’s hard to buy into the action. It feels climatic and removes the believability element; however, the overall intensity and gripping danger make it an exciting summer read.

Okay so Drowning is a phenomenal action packed thriller, one of the easiest 5 stars I think I've ever given and hard to find words for.

Not long after taking off, flight 1421 carrying numerous passengers crashes to the ocean. There's disaster after disaster from then on and we follow the story centred around Will, who went down with the plane, and his daughter who's beside him.

Everything in this book happens so fast, just when it seems to start to settle, it takes off again. You really want to try have the time to read in one sitting because it's the kind of book you literally don't want to put down.

There was not one thing I didn't enjoy in this and lots I loved! I learned a lot about various different things - I am a big fan of planes and aviation so that's a bonus. The relationships and family side was an awesome aspect making me love it a whole lot more. I think it portrayed family tragedy, family generally and important connections perfectly.

Drowning also has a strong, intelligent, independent female character who was a superstar! Big yay for females being represented as intelligent in books (as opposed to dumb FMCs to make a thriller twist work).

I'll be recommending it to everyone, unless they've a fear of flying or don't enjoy past and present POVs 😆.

Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for my eARC in exchange for my honest review. I'm a bit late so this is available to read RN!

Breathe.

Just Breathe.

And then...

Breathe again.

Because this is one book that you will read in one sitting. And you will feel your heart racing, and you will need to put your Hand Over your heart so that you can help it to stop racing. Because it is that kind of a book.

It starts off with the first sentence...

"Will Kent opened his eyes just in time to see the engine explode."

And that is where we are as readers. On a plane, watching and waiting and anticipating what will happen next. Only we don't have much time to catch our breathe. Ever. Because everything happens quickly.

The plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean just off of Hawaii. Captured from the perspectives of various passengers, both pilots and the lead flight attendant, the author takes us from the cockpit to the back seats. And it isn't just the crash. There is more.

She gives us a sinking plane with survivors and a rescue operation that includes Chris Kent, Will's ex-wife - the one who was the first line in the book.

A few survivors are trapped in a plane under water.

Oxygen is running out. Time is running out. Breathe.

As a reader, it all felt so real to me. I felt claustrophobic. I felt the emotions of the characters. I felt the tension. The suspense.

And if you haven't read this author's first book, Falling. Do that, too.

But...

My heart is still racing...I need a moment. Hand Over Heart Breathe.

WOW—you want to talk about a book that packs EVERY emotion into one and is one of the most suspenseful thrillers out there?! this is it!!!

🎬 plus this baby isn’t even released yet and has already been optioned by Warner Brothers. when i tell you i can’t wait to see this be brought to life…👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

👀 my fellow IG followers—stay tuned for an exciting announcement in-feed about this later this month 😏🤪

DROWNING is intense—no other word to use here. i saw highly rated early reviews from friends and i was so excited to dive in. had to wait after a few flights/trips passed to do so, but we finally got there 😂😅✈️ i finished this in two sittings. it was impossible for me to put down—i stayed up until 1am reading it last night and it has been foreverrrr since i did that for a book (best feeling ever!!)

the action in DROWNING starts off right away. i was actually nervous with how quickly the plane crash happens in the story. i thought, ok—we already crashed 20 pages in, what now? WHAT NOW IS RIGHT 😦🫣🤯😰

i thought i predicted the ending correctly but the author threw me for a (welcomed) loop on the very last page. i truly felt every emotion while reading this book—anxiety, nervous, scared, sad, appreciative, relieved, heartbroken and just plain shocked.

this is my first book of TJ Newman’s but not my last! her writing was excellent. it was a thriller but felt like so much more—i’m truly shocked at how many emotions she made me feel!

🚨i believe both of her novels are standalones so you don’t need to read her first one (FALLING) for this one. at least i didn’t 😂

thanks to Avid Reader Press for the gifted early copy 🤍

I’m always thankful each time I check my email and discover that NetGalley has approved me for another title, but this time, the enormity of it really sunk in. I felt honoured to have an advanced reader’s copy of TJ Newman’s ‘Drowning’ in my hands after I understood that Nicole Kidman and Jerry Bruckheimer were trying to outbid each other for the rights to the movie. I grinned like a Cheshire cat as I put down my tray table and started this ‘oh-so-desireable’ story as we started on our adventure to Machu Picchu!

Do you enjoy an adrenaline rush? Does your brain love the puzzles that thrillers provide? Do you see reading thrillers as a way to vent off stress?

Me, too.

When I’m feeling tense and stressed, I reach for a thriller. Seems contradictory, doesn’t it? I absolutely love the opportunity to put my world back in balance - reading a thriller does that for me! I get to see ordinary people rising to the occasion, good triumphing over evil, heroes making difficult choices and sacrificing - all the ‘stuff’ we loved in a fairytale.

I grow by introspection and the insight I get from reading allows me to question what I’d do in the same situation and if I’d measure up to the hero in my book. I need to read about people such as Will and Chris who put aside personal challenges and focused on the lives of others. I need to read about an eclectic group of people who join forces, foster hope in each other, and work together against the impossible. The passengers on this flight were more than simply a person seated beside someone else. They were people with challenges, people who’ve overcome challenges, and people who’ll be walking into challenges should they survive this ordeal. Newman makes each of them approachable. You’ll feel like you are on the flight with them.

You’ll gasp. You’ll cry. You’ll be elated. When you finish reading, you’ll know why there was a bidding war for this book.

In a me-first society, we need more people reading thrillers! What about you? Choose this aviation thriller - o.k. Maybe don’t read it on a long flight as I did, but go pre-order it now!

Newman, enjoy your new role as an executive producer, but please, please, keep writing.

I was generously gifted this phenomenal copy by Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
