The Outlaw Side Of Me

The Outlaw Side Of Me

Chris Janson has always done things a little differently than his peers, not so much eschewing the bro country he came up alongside as including it as one style within his broader conception of country music. On his fifth studio album, Janson seeks to further cement his status as something of a wild card, pulling together his myriad influences to create his most mature release yet. Produced by Julian Raymond, The Outlaw Side of Me showcases Janson’s songwriting chops—he’s a co-writer on all 14 tracks—as well as his stylistic idiosyncrasies, like ’90s-tinged romance on “All I Need Is You” and piano-laden Southern rock on “Tap That.” On “21 Forever,” Janson taps one of the more epic pairings in recent country memory: Dolly Parton and Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. Such a song could veer into gimmick territory, but instead it’s one of Janson’s more heartfelt lyrics, with performances from Parton and Slash that are anything but phoned in. Darius Rucker joins Janson on “Every Day of the Week,” while Brantley Gilbert rounds out the guest roster on the tongue-twisting “Hank the Hell Out of the Honkytonk.”
