by Northstar Games

Say Anything is the hilarious “get to know you” party game about what you and your friends think. “What’s the worst thing to say to a cop after being pulled over?”

Be creative. Be outrageous. Be opinionated. This is your chance to say anything!

  • Designed to get a party started as quickly as possible
  • Great social interaction with lots of laughs
  • Winner of 30 awards!
  • Comes with 8 dry-wipe boards and pens

How to Play:

Step 1.

Current player chooses a question from a randomly selected card, which states "In my opinion..." and includes a phrase or statement.

Step 2.

Everyone else writes an answer on their dry-wipe board, with the assumed persons answer. No duplicate answers are allowed, so the first to write it gets to keep it.

Step 3.

Using the SELECT-O-MATIC 5000 the current player secretly chooses their favourite response that a player has written.

Step 4.

Once an answer has been selected, everyone uses their two betting tokens to bet on which answer they think the current player has chosen. They can bet both tokens on one answer or split them between two different answers. Once all is revealed, points are scored based on who voted on what. A game lasts 12 rounds, after which all the scores are counted up and there is an overall winner declared!

      The Basics

Say Anything is a party game, but before that turns you off to it, the game is really fun for all types of people from those who rarely play games to those that do it every weekend. The game supports 3-8 players and plays in about twenty minutes. Each player picks a small white board with a symbol and color to identify the player along with two matching tokens. Each turn a player is the judge; he/she draws a card and picks a question out of the six listed. The other players write out their answers and place them in the middle of the table. If the judge believes two answers to be too similar, the second person to write the answer has to rewrite a new one. Once all the answers are revealed, the judge picks his favorite by selecting it on a dial which is kept secret. Players then place their tokens on the cards they believe the judge picked. The judge reveals his/her answer after all tokens are placed and points are scored:

1 point to the player who's answer the judge picked.
1 point to each player for their tokens on the judge's choice.
1 point to the judge for each token on the answer he picked (max 3).

After points are totaled, the player to the left is the new judge, rinse and repeat. Play ends after a specific number of rounds depending on the number of players; the player with the most points wins.

      In Depth

The best range of players is 4-6 since it provides enough answers for variety but not too many that all the good answers are taken. The strategy in the game is deciding when to place both tokens on one answer or hedge your bets and place them on separate answers. The game is balanced since it is possible to gain the maximum three points each turn regardless if you're the judge or answerer. The game is pretty much how well you know others at the table.

      Conclusion

I really love this game. I've played Apples to Apples many times but don't like it because I'm limited to the cards in my hand; if you have a bad hand, there really isn't much you can do. Say Anything is completely open ended, hence its name. It rewards clever, witty answers. This game has been a hit every time I've introduced it to friends, and it is inexpensive at $20. I can't recommend this game enough.

We've played this game several times since we got it for Christmas. It's a lot of fun. If you do have younger kids, you might want to start with the Family Edition first instead of this one. We might still get that one eventually just to get new cards/questions. I am assuming the questions for that are geared toward family ratings. Not that there are any hot topic or racy cards in this one, but some do mention scenarios like dating and such. But each card has a few questions on it and the judge gets to pick which question to ask, so if playing with younger kids, you could easily skip any questions you didn't want to use.

You need at least 3 players and everyone takes turns being the judge. The judge asks the question, then votes on which answer they like best. After each question, the judge changes so that everyone has equal turns at it. Points are given upon a few different reasons and at the end of the 12 rounds of questions, the person with the most points wins. Questions vary from things like "What would be the worst thing to have thrown in your face?" - "What would be the most inappropriate thing to ask on a first date?" - "What would be the most exotic place to visit?" - "What is the best pizza topping?" - "What would you not want to see on a fast food menu?" - "What city would be the most fun to live in?" - :"What is the most threatening animal?" -"What would make work more fun?" and much more.

What we have been enjoying about the game is that you get to know more about everyone playing. You are not just tossing dice or playing cards, but sharing your ideas and personality with each other. It gets pretty funny at times as well, and is fun for a variety of ages.

Say Anything: 3-8 Players, Ages 10+, Average Play Time = 30 Minutes

Say Anything Family: 3-6 Players, Ages 8+, Average Play Time = 30 Minutes

I'll keep this short and sweet...out of all of the games in my household, this one is the game most requested. The kids really enjoy coming up with silly answers, especially when it comes time to point out my opinion in various situations. Every answer I received on my turn revolved around "Star Trek" in some way...perhaps they are trying to tell me something? We even brought this game out during a family & friend get-together, where most of them are not gamers by any sense of the definition. Rather than score points, we just passed around the trivia deck and answered questions in humorous and inappropriate ways...this was, of course, after we sent the kids upstairs. Pictures were drawn and secrets were revealed, though it was all in good fun.

There isn't that much difference between the two games, in all honesty. The cards in "Say Anything" are a bit more open-ended to where adults can take advantage of "dirty-minded" answers, though playing it with family and keeping things PG is easily doable. Likewise, the cards in "Say Anything Family" are bit more cutesy in nature, but can be used in an adult setting. Both games are flexible that way, which I appreciate. The regular edition is designed to accommodate eight players, making it a tad more appealing than the family edition, which only accommodates six.

Is either game right for you? Well, that depends. "Say Anything" and "Say Anything Family" is a very social experience, one that gets better the more people you have playing. If it's just you and a spouse, it may not be all that rewarding unless imaginary friends are involved somehow (hey, I'm not judging). If you host or attend parties on a regular basis or have regular family game nights that involve more than three people, then either game will fit the bill nicely. It's a great way for people to learn about each other and well worth the investment.
